Strength:

Small, light, fast focusing, optically very good as long as the lens is not stopped down too much. Splashproof.Manual focusing capability if needed(Not available on the 28-56mm lens)

Weakness:

Optical quality at smaller apertures

Bought this as a package with the S1.APS SLRs are being phased out and the price reflected this. This is definitely the one lens to buy for the Vectis system.Covers a good focal range(approx 28mm-105mm in 35mm speak) Lens is nice and small and is balanced nicely with the camera. It has a nice rubberised feel to it(it is waterproof/splashproof after all!)Focuses well and quietly.Optically it is very good.A little softness is apparent at the wide end at the edges, with a little distortion at the edges also.Centre sharpness is still very good.I have found that the best way to get the sharpest pictures is to set the aperture at f8. f5.6-f9.5 is an acceptable range.Anything smaller than that and the softness becomes unacceptable. At f16-22 the image is horrendously soft to be virtually unusable. The top end of the zoom(80mm) gives the sharpest picture quality. Focusing is quiet and fast.Have not needed to use the manual focus ring yet.

Strength:

Small, light weight useful zoom range equivalent to 28-100mm in 35mm format.

Weakness:

f5.6 aperture at 80mm end can be limiting.

Good companion to the 80-240mm APO. In fact the S-1 body with the 22-80mm and 80-240mm lenses makes a superb compact high quality carry anywhere outfit for outdoor photography. Small enough and light enough to be taken up mountains without pain.

The image quality is very good even at the 22mm end, with no visible distortion (to the naked eye) the lens uses aspherical elements I believe to achieve these very good results. From a practicalk view point this lens provides the widest angle of any of the Vectis lenses and is therefore a must buy. (note the 17mm RD lens can only be used on the Dimage 3000 camera and not on the S-1 despite sharing the same lens mount I am told).
