Strength:

Schott (Carl Zeiss) glass. Brass rings. Slim mount.

Weakness:

NONE.

I purchased this filter for use with my then new Nikkor 18-35mm ultra wide lens. After using filters from other brands such as Tiffen, Hoya, Nikon, and Sunpak, I have scince become a firm believer in these fine filters. There is little if any loss of optical quality when using with top shelf lenses. The brass rings are great. Slim design does not vignette with my 18-35mm Amazing! I have scince replaced all my filters except one Tiffen extra long 2 stop ND grad for Cokin P with Heloipans. I wonder if Heliopan would costom make a replacement for that Tiffen.

Customer Service

Very Friendly.

Strength:

Brass ring just glides onto any lens and stays there! (My B+Ws sometimes loosen themselves, and Tiffens bind in polycarbonate filter threads).

Slimmer ring than most, but not quite as slim as Nikon.

I prefer the German KR-series to the U.S. skylight series. It's less pink-toned and more coral-toned. I guess that's why I like the Tiffen 812 so much.

Weakness:

None. Hey! Is this the only filter I didn't list a weakness on? Yes, indeed it is (but there's no review yet for Nikon filters).

Great filters, but you do pay a premium for them. I think a better value is to get a Nikon filter because of the Nikon-integrated multi-coating. Still, there is a color difference between the KR1.5 and the Nikon L1bc, and if you like the KR, then the only option is to step up to the Heliopan multi-coated series (or the B+W MC). In that case, I'd give the nod to the Heliopan over the B+W, for its slimmer ring and its more-secure mounting on the lens.

Strength:

slim
excellent clarity
superb materials and build

Weakness:

None

I have just got a Heliopan 81b slim. Its clarity is impressive- I notice no loss in resolution or contrast. The colour is slightly brownish vs. the normal yellowish 81b. I like the extra warmth, which I do need on those oft. overcast San Francisco days or when the fog rolls in. My normal film gets that extra pumch and people do like it- almost like that sunset/sunrise light that has a positive effect on people. The filter is very slim even compared to Nikons large diameter filters. The box says it is coated- I don't know what it is, but it is so good. The filter is a bit costly, but I knew what I wanted and this is it. I cannot forsee that another filter can be significantly better than this one. Again, the clarity of the filter is very impressive.

Strength:

clear uv
slim
Schott glass- as good as optical glass gets

Weakness:

a bit pricey

I use these filters on my Nikon lenses. ALthough I know that they are protective and have 90%+ transmission qualities, I am now convinced that ALL filters, no matter how good they are, do reduce resolution and contrast by about 3-5%. This is probably only noticable upon enlargements of anything bigger than an 8x10. Sometimes it is noticeable at 8x10. This is only crucial if you are doing your own prints for presentation or if you desire to get the most quality from your lenses. At first, I did not question that fact because I was using the protective clear ones to protect my lenses- I don't use lens caps- too constrictive/time consuming and encourage bringing dirt attached to the caps directly to the lens surface. Of course, I still use them for color purposes and when there is a high amount of particulate matter in the environment. I have talked to optometrists and optical labs about this issue- they do have the knowledge because they use similar high quality lenses and are constantly aware of optical transmission quality. They are also acutely aware of the properties of coatings and other lens qualities. Heliopan and BW are some of the highest quality filters available- use them when necessary. No more UV filter on any of my Nikons or my beloved Hexar unless they require it! Helipan still gets my 5 whole votes because they close to match the fit of my lenses and use the best glass available. Kudos!

I've got the multu-coated UV 62 mm filter.
Slim, very slim
Clear

Weakness:

HIGH money-to-value (a California website selling it at $89.9! Totally agree that it gets to the quality of optical glass. Some people chose to place a cheap priced filter in front of their expensive lens, which is like driving a BMW injected with diesel ---- illogical. That could spoil your picture. Better to use none in that case. I was like that but with the Heliopan one, I have no regret in spending the money, even if it costed more than I paid.
