cleans itself and wastes a lot of ink

I have an MFC - 440 CN from brother.got it for my home office.
Used it for 2 years and really got tired of buying more and more ink.

I use 4-in-one fax-scanner-copy-printer to mostly print directions, invoices and checks.so i don't really use colors to print anything only black and white, BUT
nothing to say that every time i print something I need to go to setttings and change it for black and white printing (it doesn't let You make it a default setting),I still have to buy other 3 colors to keep the machine working.

If one of the colors is empty, forget it, it's not going to do anything unless you refill. $ 26 per color x 4 colors every month?
