Strength:

Excellent print quality. Quiet operation.

Weakness:

Roll paper goes out of alignment. No support for 4x6" perforated paper with Epson software!! Consumables very expensive.

An excellent photo printer. I could not believe the quality of first print I did on it. A friend of mine uses a 1270 for work and he convinced me to get one. I only wanted A4 so I got the 890. I''''''''ve used it for 9 months and every print is good (albeit only as good as the source image!). The range of papers is good but my preference is for matte paper. It seems to me to give better prints. One bad thing is I always have trouble with the 100mm roll paper. It always goes out of alignment when batch printing. A bit annoying. The Epson Photoquicker software is very good for printing pictures - more so than Microsoft Picture It, IMHO. A weird thing, however, is that this Photoquicker software (I have version 2) does not support the 4x6" preforated photo paper!! I rang tech support and they couldn''''''''t explain either. When version 3 came out I downloaded it and it didn''''''''t support it either! Bizarre. Even more bizarre is that version 3 no longer has the vast array of editing tools, like sepia, b/w and other visual effects. I hurriedly reinstalled version 2.

Strength:

Closest thing to having a color lab at home. Seems better built than some of the previous Epsons I''ve worked with. Six color print process

Weakness:

Slow print speed (although this is a given, you''re making photographs, let''s be real) No roll paper wider than 8.3".

I got this printer five days ago with my Minolta Dimage Scan Dual II slide scanner. I set up the scanner and ran a test print on the 4x6 Premium Glossy Photo Paper that''s provided in the box. (on a roll) My jaw dropped. The pictures were for a friend''s wedding album, and several images printed on this printer are right next to actual chemical lab prints. I can''t tell the difference looking at them side by side. Unless you know how to recognice the print pattern (when it''s visible, which is only in fringe hilight areas) you won''t be able to distinguish the prints from regular lab prints. Especially at regular reading distance in an album or frame. I also tried some of the Epson Colorlife Paper, and the finish looks just like Pearle papers used in traditional photography. Just stunning. If you want to print photos at home, this is the printer. HOWEVER, the prints will only be as good as the scan or digital shot. Don''t skimp on the aquisition part of the process, or you''ll just be wasting ink. DON''T buy this printer if you are going to use it to print a picture once a month. It''s a waste to use six colors to print web sites and memos. Get a cheapo second printer for that stuff. (Lexmark, $50)

Weakness:

mentioned above

Bought this printer with high expectation. But the printouts turned out to be disaster. 1. Black-and-white photos printed on Epson Photo Paper (glossy) and Epson heavyweight matte paper (one each included in the shipment) seemed to be OK, but not better than Epson 777. Both showed slightly green instead of pure b/w. If b/w mode was used, the resolution would be much lower (using less nozzles). 2. Color photos printed on Kodak premium glossy and premium satin paper was terrible. The ink became color patches similar to dry skin or turtle back or drought land. The photos were considered to be unviewable. 3. Any photo, color or b/w, was rendered extremely terribly on Kodak Brochure paper. 4. Epson technical support was contacted. After half an hour wait, and a few minutes of diagnostics, the person simply said he knew what happened. He insisted that Epson recommended to use Epson papers for best results. However, when pressed, he stoped short saying that this printer could only use Epson papers, and avoided answering questions about whether the printer worked on other types of paper. He also made an excuse by blaming my PhotoShop software. Since I had used the two pieces of Epson paper included in the shipment for b/w printing, I had no way to varify if color printing worked or not on Epson papers (of course I would not buy a pack of Epson paper just to try it out). Even if it worked fine on Epson paper, it is totally unacceptable for a printer of $270 being able to use only one paper brand. They only way is to return the product.

Consumables are very expensive.

This was an upgrade for a 5 year old HP DeskJet and, wow, how much the technology has changed. The quality is simply outstanding with photos printed on premium glossy paper undistinguishable from minilab prints at normal viewing distances (yes you can still see the dots if you hold it up to your face or use a loupe.) 4 stars for value because the consumables are very expensive and the ink consumption is very high. Expect to get no more than 12-15 full color 8x10s from a single color cartridge.

Strength:

fast, sharp, easy to setup

Weakness:

skintones are still impossible to get right!

A great printer and about as good as you can expect for $300. I still use pegasus printing for anything important, but it does a good job on quick proofs and prints for friends. The software is excellent as is the overall colour quality...

WOW, when i bought this print, I didn't expect much, I hoped to use it for proofing. But WOW, was I impressed the quality. I been in photography for over 6 years, uses all kind of camera, films lens and always Pro labs. I fell I have good sense of quality. There is no perfect printer, but for home use it terrific. I use a D30 with a canon 28-135 usm IS lens, and I 8x10 pic's that are incredible, good enough to frame, and even proud to presnt with. Other users either got a bad printer or just aren't set up right or don't know what there doing. No problems, I have sold all my film camera and film. Going forward there is no need for film, I have 20x30 print from Pro Lab (really Portait Pro Lab) from the D30 that some people think it's Medium Format. Digital photography is HERE. But for any 8x10 and under work the Epson will do perfectly, no need for the lab. It's that good, if there 10 stars I would give to it.
