Strength:

Lightweight but very rigid platform.
MkII version has much better leg releases (wider and easier to tighten/loosen)

Weakness:

Price!

Bought the Gitzo after contemplating the Manfrotto Carbon One, Slik CF and Mamiya CF tripods. In the shop, the Gitzo impressed me the most with its rigidity and sturdiness compared to the others. BUild quality was also exemplary (others were a bit tacky or "felt" of lower quality).

Not tried so far.

Strength:

Small size, lightness and solid feel, even when compared with larger metal tripods

Weakness:

The locking tensions on the legs are difficult to get right, and I find myself having to tighten up a section in order to release the section below it. This eats time and can be frustrating if you're in a hurry (but then why would you be using a tripod??)

I bought mine mail order and was surprised at the weight. Although it IS noticeably lighter, the difference between it and my old aluminium pod is not as great as I'd hoped. It does fold down nice and small though, and this for me is the winner - I can tether it to my Lowe backpack and not notice it's there. I use it with the excellent 1276 magnesium ball head which has a great system for taking vertical shots - much better than other balls I've used.

Strength:

Very much. It's about as steady as my Bogen 3021 but with the 3262QR ball head, it's only 4 lbs.

Weakness:

Screw leg locks take some getting used to. You have to do it in specific order.

Way too much money, but it's a great tripod for the weight.

Strength:

Extremely light weight, handy, solid set up, compact when fully retracted.

Weakness:

Keep it out of sand or be prepared to disassemble, clean and lube it.

The advice to get a tripod I would take along convinced me to purchase this expensive item. I have not regreted this purchase. For months after I bought it I shot almost exclusively on the tripod. I take it mountain biking with various parts of my Nikon outfit and it has proven durable. An everyday use for me is with an old long Nikon lens that weighs 8.5 lbs. It took some practice, but sharp slides are attainable with this extremely light tripod. Amazing. I use it with a Foba Mini-Ball.
