Strength:

Light but sturdy.
Center leg braces.
Easy to set up and break down. Leg locks are very quick and easy to use.
Retractable spikes in the feet are a plus.
At full extension, the camera can be set up at nearly eye-level (I'm 5'9").
The 3-way head is pretty good and easy to set up.
I liked having a bubble level, though a bubble level on the head (instead of the base) would be much more useful.
A very good value - I found one for $30 - especially for an amateur/avid photographer.

Weakness:

The mounting screw on the quick release plate is very cheap and doesn't hold the camera tight. The mounting screw has a round plastic grip which is very hard to tighten. After hand-tightening, I set up my Nikon N80 with a 28-105mm lens (total weight ~33 oz.) for a portrait shot (vertical), and the camera did a nose-dive; it rotated to point downward. I had to use a coin in the slot of the mounting screw to tighten it, but the coin wears out the plastic, so I'm not sure how many tightenings it will survive. Also, the camera head can only be set 0-90 degrees (landscape to portrait). So, you need to start out with very level ground. It would be more useful to increase the range to -10 to 100 degrees, to allow for manufacturing/assembling variations and uneven ground.

The Velbon DF-50 is a great tripod that's light enough to carry around with you (you're much less likely to bring a heavy tripod with you, no matter how great it is), but sturdy enough for most shooting occasions. It is very easy to set up (having center leg braces means you don't have to worry about whether the legs are extended at the widest possible angle or not). There are many functions included at a low price, so it is an exceptional value. My only complaints are that the bubble level is kinda useless (since it's not on the swiveling head), and the afore-mentioned loose mounting screw. But if you're mainly using one camera with one tripod (as I am), then this may not be so great a problem since you can attach the mounting plate to your camera as tightly as possible and keep it there. This tripod is great for amateur/learning photographers who want an all-purpose tripod.
