Lenses | News | Nikon New Nikon AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G VR – Affordable Full-Frame Standard Zoom LensNikon has an affordable new standard zoom lens option for FX format (full frame) photographers – the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR. With a comparable zoom range and a price about one-third that of the 24-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor, the new 24-85mm VR zoom lens is a very nice alternative for photographers on a budget who want a worthy standard zoom to use with their Nikon full-frame digital SLR. The new lens is about half the size and weight of the 24-70mm Nikkor so it’s a good lens option where space and weight are an issue, as well. It also benefits from Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) optical image stabilization, for up to 4 stops of camera shake correction – something the bigger, more expensive 24-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor doesn’t have. That extra 15mm of reach is a nice bonus, too – especially considering the travel-friendly size of the lens.

The new Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR zoom lens is scheduled to be in stores at the end of this month (June, 2012). The suggested retail price is US $599.95.

It’s rumoured that there’s a low-cost FX 24Mpix D600 on the way soon. This would be a good kit lens to go with it.
I already have the 2003 24-85 f3.5-4.5 AF-S but to my great regret it doesn’t have the definition to fully match my D800 (so I stick to top level lenses only). Maybe this one will do better. The MTF results look promising
