More and more photographers are getting interested in being able to save GPS information with their digital photos. The geotagging enthusiasts at the German company foolography have introduced a new wireless solution for people who want to collect and save GPS data with their photos. The new Unleashed module connects wirelessly to any Bluetooth GPS device. It plugs into the 10-pin connector on select Nikon digital SLRs and allows the camera to embed the location data from your GPS in the EXIF data of your image files.
The Digital Imaging Marketing Association gave the Unleashed their DIMA 2009 Innovative Digital Product Award. A price hasn’t been determined yet, but they are shooting for about $250. The Unleashed is compatible with all Bluetooth GPS units and works with the Nikon D200, D300, D700, D2HS, D2X, D2Xs, D3 and D3X. Foolography is working on a version for the Nikon D90 as well as a “pro” version that will include a tilt-compensated electronic compass so that the direction of your lens will be stored along with the standard GPS location data. An Unleashed for Canon DSLRs is also in early development.

WANT! – great to see this getting released.
Well! This GPS devices are round now with more features which are great if you really want to record exact location of you picture taken. But still the price is high, maybe in general because are new and as the time pass hopefully will cut down the prices which i don’t don’t doubt.
great product! but please get that sigma lens off that nikon!
Been reading about this for almost a year now and still can’t find it available anywhere.
At 199 Euros or $260 US it is double the cost of a dedicated geotagging device for Nikons. With this device one needs to spend $40 on a bluetooth GPS unit like those from Holux which begs the question why the Bluetooth receiver for the Nikon costs 6 times as much as Holux GPS bluetooth transmitter. But $260 plus $40 versus $149 for a Promote Systems GPS Receiver GPS-N-1 that provides an equivalent solution is hard to buy in more ways than one.
This Bluetooth receiver for the Nikon is comparable to the units selling for $90 US from Aokatec. With a $40 Holux the total cost of a Aokatec solution at $130 is a much better value.
iPhone owners should take a look at my GeoLogTag iPhone app. It tracks your location during a photoshoot and helps geotagging your photos afterwards. Tested with photos from 3000+ different digital cameras.
For Mac and Flickr users, it’s an all-in-one geotagging solutions since geotagging is done over WiFi. Windows users can use the GPX file exported by GeoLogTag in combination with a geotagging application like GeoSetter or RoboGeo.
