I have to say I have moved from a Canon AV-1 to this, and I have to say it is a good camera. The stock lens that it comes with is ok, and I like the various manual modes. Its taken clear pictures, and works well with my older flash equipment.
Strengths:
Great manual modes, auto-focus when needed. ease to switch lens.
Weaknesses:
Not found of the location of the rear door switch, and the special batteries.
I have been happily using the Rebel X for almost 10 years. It is light enough to carry everywhere and does nearly everything I ask of it.
I love the fact that it does not have the built-in flash, because I don't have to worry about keeping it in manual mode in low light. The Canon Speedlite has done a great job when needed.
Pictures have been great, even with the standard 35-80 zoom. And now that I'm stepping up to some faster and finer prime lenses, the quality is astounding.
Strengths:
Light weight, reliability, manual options
no built-in flash
Weaknesses:
No depth of field preview; autofocus can get confused, especially in low light;
manual controls can still have a mind of their own at times
Canon EOS 1000 F / EOS Rebel X in usa?
I really LOVE this camera!
This camera fill all my needs.. :)
Strengths:
Lots of useable features, light, relative cheap, excellent performance/price ratio..
Good AF, program modes (sports, portrait, macro, etc...), timer, multi exp (1-9), great...
Weaknesses:
Plastic lens, but who cares? Looks great... :)

I find this a VERY satisying introduction to the world of SLR photography.
It came at a good price, packing good performance. The camera meters well and allows you to make adjustments when it''s in Program mode. I bought a Speedlite 200E ($60) to use with this and have not missed having a built-in flash at all.
The lens that comes with this camera is SHARP (the techs at the photo lab I use noticed the difference between the Rebel and my earlier film after my first roll of film.)
This is a very good camera!
Strengths:
PRICE!!! Can''t be beat! Adept metering. Light weight. Sharp lens. Gives good feedback.
Weaknesses:
Built-in flash would be nice, but hey, you get what you pay for. Also, wish flash sync was faster (1/90) but I''ve found this is pretty standard number for entry-level cameras.

I love this camera (Rebel XS). I have had it for 5 1/2 years, and it has never failed me. The picture quality is outstanding for a 35mm. All in all, a great camera, esp for a beginner.
Strengths:
Outstanding picture quality, not too complicated, doesn't have so many options and modes that it is overwhelming.
Weaknesses:
The pop-up flash is fine for snapshots and casual photos, but is a bit harsh for portraits or art photography.
Customer Service:
Only one minor problem in five years, a plastic ring on the lens housing of the standard Canon 25-80mm lens cracked, but was fixed with some tape and has been fine ever since.
