Strength:

Over all a really great SLR, especially with the PB-E1. This is a hard core mega camera with lots of guts. Fast with and with the 16 area metering capability it works fantastic. The selectable focus area is something only found on the best Nikons. Plus you know your holding a camera. Now I own all Canon, with the Eos 3 as my main camera backed up by a 1N RS

Weakness:

The Canon flash metering in this camera is "OK". You definately have to practice, especially if you use to a Nikon N90s or F100.
The A-ttyl just isn't as good. But that being said. Definately not a good choice for a beginner, but a tried and true veteran work horse

For a photographer who knows what they are doing.
Solid, durable, and fast. Aged, but still well worth the money

Strength:

reliable, rugged

Weakness:

no vertical grip. The battery pack BP-1 is somewhat no use. Should Canon offer a vertical grip like VG10 for A2E, it would be sold like hot cakes.

I wish Cannon offered a vertical grip with controls for this camera. Otherwise it is an excellent camera.

Strength:

Solid, heavy, reliable, and well built. Tried and True. The workhorse of all SLR's. Look at the sidelines of any sporting event or media event. What is the predominant camera brand seen? -- Canon.

Any superlative is descriptive of the 1N.

Weakness:

None. New camera => new functions and controls to learn.

By the feel of this camera, you know it's solidly built and well suited for any photographic adventure. I purchased 1N to replace my beloved and aged Canon EOS 10S. Despite the release of 1V, the 1N is still more than adequate. It is destined to become a "classic". I was considering the EOS 3, but it doesn't quite have the 1N's reputation. Eye controlled focus? In my opinion, just a gimmick. EOS 1V -- too expensive. Digital SLR's? Still way too expensive and not as durable. The only advantage is the immediate gratification in seeing your photos you've just taken.

I love photography as a hobby and was looking for a "step-up" in equipment and I'm in no way disappointed with this purchase.

Strength:

Solid, built strong, with custom functions you can access almost every function on top of the camera, where they belong. Nice grip, not slippery. Led has a light, makes things a lot easier in the dark. Fast auto focus. Works well with 540 EZ. I Love the 1/250 sync. speed.

Weakness:

I can,t find any weaknesses. Some people gripe about the weight, but that just comes with a pro camera. The 1n is a little louder than the A2, but I like to hear what my camera is doing. It,s not a problem for me. I hear people gripe about the metering on jut about every kind of camera there is, but every camera is slightly different. It,s just getting to know your camera.

I bought a 1n because my A-2 needed repair, and I didn,t want to be with out a camera for 1-2 months. Im kinda glad my A2 broke, or I would have never known how good a camera the 1n is. Some peple think the 1n is out dated, but I don,t like too many bells & whistles on my camera. I don,t know why anyone needs a more expensive camera, unless you are going to photograph a humming bird on speed. If you want a solid work horse that will last a long time, the 1n will fill the bill. The 1n is twice as much money as the A2, but worth it.

Strength:

Solid body, beautiful construction, easy as hell to use. Fast auto focus,100% viewfinder,
WOW!!!!!

Weakness:

NONE, to anyone who put a weakness.where I don't see it, you can't buy a better camera, If you want something zen like,go to venus. Every camera has a flaw It's up to the individual user.

If you want the best camera money can buy you want this. I'm sorry no other camera lives up to this, the 1V has the same idea, and for a grand more you should get it, but only if your a pro.
And I don't think a pro is going to look on these pages for advice on camera equipment. To any pros forgive me. Don't use nikon please, too slow auto focus, loud motors, clunky, hard to hold. The 1n has fast, quiet autofocus, you can't beat the USM
lenses, and this thing will go thruough a brick wall and survive, isn't that what a camera should do for you. If you want technology and no strength
go for the eos3, but if you drop it once $300 down the drain, I don't know about you, but I would rather buy a new USM lens for that price.
I bought this camera on ebay and it has so much life left in it, it's ridiculous.

Strength:

Built like a tank. Focuses faster at 5 focus points than at 45 "lottery" points of the EOS 1vHS. In my 6 years of ownership and thousands of rolls put through the camera, ZERO failures.

Weakness:

Battery indicator is not calibrated for lithium AA batteries. Indicator will still read 3 dashes right up to the very end of battery life...then the indicator goes down to a blinking dash. With Alkaline batteries the indicator seems a bit conservative. After a long shoot I'm extra careful to check my batteries with the Fluke digital multimeter....just to be sure.

This camera has been with me for quite a while and it still never ceases to amaze me. Reliability is unparalleled. Speed of focusing is still impressive, though not as good as an EOS 3 on one sensor selection. You can have 5 focus points selected on the 1n and this will easilly beat the EOS 1VHS (on 45 points) out on a "draw" match. EOS 1VHS will spend time to make up it's mind...the 1n already is locked and firing.

Lenses are excellent. I use the following and have had excellent results with them. 300 2.8L, 200 1.8L, 85 1.2L, 70-200 2.8L, 28-70 2.8L, 50 2.5 macro (with dedicated 1x and 25mm ext tubes). Don't worry about what the N*K*N guys say about the so called fragileness of flourite in lenses. They have no documented proof. Also, the color rendition of "ED" lenses leaves quite a bit to be desired. Canon is the most color accurate lens that I've encountered. Why else do you think some of the Zeiss lenses are going with Flourite?

Camera is also quite weatherproof. I was caught in a 2 1/2 hour DOWNPOUR at Great America taking some pics of friends. The camera was constantly exposed to the equivalent of a garden hose set on full throttle. All through that time I kept on taking shots...ZERO failures. Sealing is excellent on the 1n...the 1v is complete overkill!

For astrophotography, EXCELLENT resolution with L series (flourite) lenses. MUCH better in color than ED or BK7 glass. Be sure to use the power winder since you'll get about 60+ hours of usage.

The lenses and autofocus made the difference when I bought the camera back in '94. The F5 came out 2 years later, and although it's a faster focusing body and 8fps, the Nikon lineup still can't match up to the L series (especially the 200 1.8L!) lenses of Canon. Nikon will probably end up switching to Flourite composite...then it'll (maybe) be a fair fight. They did it with a copycat of the IS (image stabilization) lenses...and with the Ultrasonic motors. Canon was there first by a longshot.

If you happen to snag on one of these treasures...BUY IT and use it! Be sure to get the winder too!

Customer Service

Excellent. As good as the model "Lexus" service.

Strength:

The build, the feeling, the absolute ease of use. This thing looks awfully comlicated when looking at the specs and the amount of controls and buttons. But using it is almost intuitive. All controls are logically placed and there is just the right amount of information in the viewfinder. You have total control! I´m truly impressed with this cameras user interface.

Weakness:

Absolutely none... Well, OK, maybe the desire that awakens to buy L-lenses en masse...

This is a camera for serious users, no questions about that. The fealing when using it is beyond comparasing. Sometimes it feels like having a machine gun right in front of your face. The sound of the shutter is loud, but distinct and powerful. It is the feeling of using the camera that makes you want to have it with you wherever you go. OK, its not the smallest thing to bring with you everywhere, but without the booster it´s not a giant camera. Plus that you know that it is rugged enough to take a few bumps. On photo.net you can read Philip Greenspuns interesting comment regarding "men with small penises", i.e. those who want a big SLR and thus feeling like a pro and compensating for a small penis. Well, maybe thats true, using this camera makes you feel like a pro. But this is a positive thing, you take youre photographing to a new level, you frame your subjects more carefully (the 100% viewfinder also helps here), you compose your images with great care, you might even start taking notes with regards to aperture values, light conditions, etc. The bottom line is: This camera does make you a better photographer, not because of the camera itself, but because you will feel more serious and you will take more pictures. Practise makes perfect! If you find one of these gems on the used market: Buy it!! You won´t be sorry.

Strength:

Just too many to list.
It's designed with the working PRO in mind.

Weakness:

none that I can find. For the price, it gives you MUCH MORE than what Nikon has to offer.

This is an amazing camera. Too bad Canon has ceased production on it. It is my opinion that a new (or slightly used) 1n is a much better deal than a new Eos 3. The build is better (less plastic), you get 100% viewfinder coverage, 1/250 flash synch, built in diopter, viewfinder shutter, the possibility of adding a polaroid back, etc. Don't get me wrong, the 3 will give you alot of capability, but, compared to the 1n, it's just a techie toy. Pick both up and you'll see the difference immediately.

May I be so bold as to say that, with the right care & maintenance, this camera body could last a LIFETIME. Bottome line, if you want an EOS body with PRO features and options, but don't have an extra $1,800 burning a hole in your pocket, get a 1n, before it's too late! Truly the best deal in a pro camera available here. Other than the outrageously expensive 1v, your only other option (within a similar price class) would be the NIKON F100, whose capability is a joke compared to that of the 1n, yet can only be had for more $$$$$!

IF YOU FIND THIS CAMERA NEW FOR ABOUT $900.00. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND BUY IT! YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

Customer Service

I havn't had to send my camera in for service yet, since it's brand new. However, I have found most Canon USA customer service reps to be mediocre at best.

Strength:

The AV seting provides perfect timing for all settings, which came in handy while shooting at night. The images produced are far superior to my previous camera which up until upgrading I thought was the cats meow. Don't bother with the EOS 1-V until the price comes down, 45 point auto focus is great, but then where is the challenge?

Weakness:

Purchasing this camera will make a voice in your head appear chanting "buy more lenses, buy more toys."

The Canon EOS 1n is an exceptional professional grade SLR. I have been shooting with it for 6 months now and have found that it can do much much more than I should ever need from a camera at a price that many lesser SLR's almost double.
