Strength:

Beautifully built, superbly balanced and thus comfortable camera to use - ...a joy to handle, considering its size. Intutitive controls - faultless operation ...and enough features to keep a gadget-freak like me happy, without compromising the photographer's creativity.

Weakness:

Perhaps it's size and weight with E1 Power Drive Booster.

For sure the EOS 1N has now been superseded by a new generation of SLR camera - but, with little to criticise already, current purchase prices to be found, make an already superb buy, a 'must-buy' purchase for the serious SLR photographer!

Strength:

Wow... very nice camera. Pretty much everything! I think the weight feels perfect!

Weakness:

Two complaints (Sorry:-(.. CF/AEB door (where else are you gonna put it though??) and the A Preview button feels odd when pressed)

Great Camera! Feels better than the 1V which I have held a couple of times, and very intuitive, concise, and well, wonderful. Two times is not enough, FIVE STARS! :-)

Customer Service

None required had it over a year.

Strength:

Fast autofocus, better AI than EOS A2e. Sturdy construction
no nonsense controls
short blackout time

Weakness:

getting old
vertical grip not anywhere near as good as the VG10 on A2e
not 100% viewfinder
kinda noisy, but not nearly as much as F5
seperate focusing points kinda useless compared to the A2e with eyefocus
expensive for what it does

This is a pro camera best used for sports and other activities when fast, continuous autofocus is needed. Other than that, there is not much reason to go for the A2e or lower. As for the EOS-3, I see no reason why the 1N is better at all. Go for the 3 and save some $$$.

Strength:

Simplicity of use under any conditions for every type of photography you can do with a 35mm SLR!
No restriction with such a camera.

Weakness:

Not really problems.
But, to get the best of its body you need a better grip, a better battery pack, the best flash from Canon...
It a pro camera; the bill you'll have to pay is "pro" too!!! Be care...
And, personally, I have experienced some exposure errors (+/-) when combining ambiant and flash light (filling,...)

I would prefer an EOS-3 today.
But, ok, if you can buy it for an explosive price: go and get it!!!
But, be care for the complementary equipment.
And, of course, never forget: do not spend all your money on a super-mega-whatever-hyper-body and then buy the worst lenses... But, maybe you are a (semi-)pro?!

Strength:

This thing is a tank. I very rarely use a bag and it shows. This thing has been beaten like a red headed step-child and still works great. This thing is very easy to use, especially when compared to its Nikon counterparts.

Weakness:

The viewfinder is rather dark compared to something like a Nikon. Makes it very hard to manually focus, even with 2.8 lenses.

Super camera for sports or anyone serious about photojournalism. Very easy to find controls in any situation. Dark viewfinder is a pretty big letdown to me.

Strength:

I originally bought the Canon EOS 1N because of its durability and reputation for being
dependable and because Canon 1N is there "Pro Series". I have had a number of Canon manual cameras over the years and most recently the A2E. The A2E is a fine camera but it is not a "Pro" camera by any means. Even though I am not a pro the 1N's shutter is guaranteed for 100,000 photographs.
That is a very strong statement about a product and a camera. I want a camera that is rugged and has the numerous features that this camera does. The 14 functions are indeed overwhelming, but its just like a V-8, the power there when you need it. It takes some getting used to and I do carry the manual and a list of the custom functions whenever I want to take a shot that requires some set up. Although, is it a little inconvenient to program the camera for these very special function, a quick look and you can program the camera easily. The camera is very quiet in operation. I use the camera with the BP-E1 battery pack because of the very sturdy grip it provides. The market on this camera right now to buy is very good with the introduction of the EOS-3 and the price is very reasonable.

Weakness:

Flawless operation. An engineering marvel.

The price on this camera is very reasonable now with the introduction of EOS-3. The camera has so many features that is an engineering marvel! I am still learning about it and read a Lantern book I bought about the 1N just to educate myself. This camera is not for everyone! If you are willing to learn and be patient and discover the amazing things possible photographically this camera is capable of, I highly recommend it.

Strength:

I like the camera mostly because of its durability and sturdiness. Also, I like its 100% field of view and mirror lockup features. The controls are well placed, autofocus and metering are flawless, like other EOS cameras. It is also relative small in size as a pro body.

Weakness:

Never any. My only complaint is that the power booster lacks the control dial in vertical position.

If you need a camera body that can last a long time, and if you need ultimate control and reliability, this is the right choice.

Customer Service

Overall experience with customer service is pleasant.

I've used this camera in all sort of conditions and it has never failed to take a picture when I wanted. I've recently needed to purchase a 2nd body and was considering the EOS-3 but after I held the camera, I bought another 1n instead, for $300 less (at BH-after rebate) I used the extra cash to buy film.

Strength:

The 1N is a solidly built camera. Geared toward the professionals, there are program modes that make this camera possibly the "BEST" on the market. Mirror lock-up, auto bracketing, and spot metering are all programable. This is NOT a toy.

Weakness:

There are a few down points about the 1N as there are with any other camera. The custom functions are pretty hard to memorize. I DO carry the manual with me. I would have liked to see an option for manual over-ride when the batteries go dead. Also, I would have loved to have it where the auto focus works in extremely low light.

This is definetly one of the finest cameras on the market. The price has lowered just a bit since I had bought mine. I have added the power booster to mine to give it over 6fps. I have notice that the camera does run alot better when using Canons' USM lenses. If you do use other brand lenses, you will find Tamron to probably do a great job. Even though I an very picky with my options on cameras, I have to give the Canon 1N 5 out of 5 in all catagories.

Customer Service

I've never had to contact Canon on any problems with the camera. As far as a little technical advice, they are VERY good at what they do.

Strength:

It is a durable camera without the useless features. Exposure adjustment are in 1/3 stop increments which is valuable if you shoot slide films. The spot meter is quite handy too.

Weakness:

Flash metering could be better. Motordrive speed button is behind a door under your right hand.

I use this camera mostly for sports photography for the durability on the sidelines and the fast winder with the booster. The body is heavy but reflects a durability that cameras in the real world need. If the qualities of this body and the silent qualities of the A2 were combined, the result should be unbeatable. Maybe the EOS-3 is that body?
