Strength:

Focusing, metering, features, speed, handling.

Weakness:

Heavy & large, no backwards compatibility with FD lenses. Flash Sync hasn't improved in 12 years

Finally had to admit I needed to replace my ageing T90s as even used models were looking tatty. (Still kept the best one and an A1 though). Wanted to hate the 1Vs, loved them. They handle very well with the Nicad packs and I am even starting to trust AF. I can't think of anything an SLR can do that this doesn't. It is intuitive and produces great results. I still think the T90 looks better though.

Strength:

It has a fast auto focus & is very light weight without the booster.

Weakness:

It only has a 1/250 Shutter Sync , my F-5 has a 1/300 plus a 1/4000 in fp mode .

I like my F-5 much better ! I like this camera but the F-5 is a much better camera . It costs a little more ,but it is worth it if you want more of a pro-camera. The F-5 is lighter than the eos1v with the booster . I will sell this eos 1v
as Im not that happy with it ! If you have alot of canon lens ,then this is your camera. But Nikon Has not changed their lens mount in over 50 years !

Strength:

Build Quality, Handling, Speed and Improved weather proofing.

Weakness:

Nothing that I would define as a weakness.
Maybe the price but you get what you pay for.

I can say without hesitation that the 1V is worth every cent. Aimed squarley at the professional photographer this machine is no toy. Even if you don't require the extra speed I recommend that you go for the booster as it adds to the ergonomics of the camera. It certainly adds to the size and the weight but it also installs a confidence that this camera can go the distance no matter what the conditions. If you have used any of the previous Eos1 cameras transition to the 1v is very easy. Although I recommend reading the manual to understand the newly added features I comfortably shot my first dozen rolls of film without doing so. People not so experienced in photography would be better served by a camera that is not so advanced. You need a good understanding of your craft to make the most of the 1V. If you earn a living from making photographs this camera will serve you well.

Customer Service

During the 9 years that I have been using Eos professional equipment aside from periodic cleaning I have never had to have any of it serviced due to a result of malfunctioning.

Strength:

With the nicad bat. motor advances up to 10 frames per second. Previous reviews are incorrect as this camera's flash will sinc at all speeds with 550 flash. Great balance. Worlds fastest auto focus. Great metering. Water resistant. Nearly no viewfinder blackout.

Weakness:

?

In my photo career there have been 3 major breakthoughs have impacted my photography. 1st being autofocus lenses, 2nd being digicams, 3 now owning the Eos 1V. This is the most incredible camera on the market!!! It is worth every penny of $1,900 with booster.

Customer Service

As a member of CPS I have had great results.

Strength:

Ease of use for Canon user, excellent range of user settable features, data recording for lens and settings, rugged body design

Weakness:

Weight is a little heavy, but not too bad even with a 70-200mm f/2.8L lens

This camera is definitely worth the money. The Auto Focus feature is phenomenal when used in conjunction with the 70-200mm f/2.8L and is ergonomically very nice to use. Definitely a major step up from the Canon A2, but the price difference speaks for itself. Nikon users... I'm not sure why anyone would want to go with Nikon cameras... Not as intuitive as Canon to me personally.

Weakness:

1. Is there?

The 1V is a great camera to buy if you have the money. The Eos 3 is pretty much similar in function and can do the same thing minus the built of the 1V. The 1V is fantastic with the 550 EX flash. What a combination! Fill flash and high speed sync will blow the competition out of the water. I used to carry the Quantum Q Flash (a very nice flash) with me to shoot weddings. Now I just leave it in the closet to collect dust. This camera amazes me every time I do a wedding. I got so much compliment on the pictures. The 550EX and 1V is so accurate that it is not even funny. I tested out the combination with a Sekonic 508 flash meter. On the dot every time. D*** this is good. Bottom Line: Buy the 1v if you have the money, or the Eos 3 if you don't. Make sure you spend the extra few hundred for the 550 EX. This combination will make you a better photographer even if you don't know didly squat about photography.

Strength:

looks, built, control, AF speed, personal function, spot meter.

Weakness:

I don't like the 45 point AF focus.

One of the best AF camera out there. I wouldn't say it is better than the F5 but I like it better than the F5. The Canon "L" lens line is what really got me to buy this camera. Do not like the 45 point focus though, not only at times it focuses on things I don't want, it also slows down the overall AF speed. I use custom function to reduce the focus area and like it much better.

Customer Service

Strength:

Solid, extremely adaptable to personal preferences in operation

Weakness:

None that I can think of.

There is something indefinably wonderful about using this camera. The functions all fall to hand as one expects (because one sets them for oneself). The feel is solid. The automatic exposure is spot on. (Usually when I over ride it with the thumb wheel, I guess wrong.) The “personal functions” (which are set via your computer) are wonderfully helpful. I have mine set to disable the shutter release if there is no film loaded. If you have ever been on a hectic assignment shooting on your “156th” frame, you will appreciate the value of this assignment saving feature. (Worth the price of the camera alone.)

Also since I do a lot of multiple exposure photography, I have configured the camera to reset the same number of multiples after finishing the first set. This is a great convenience since I never do just one set of multiples. They are complex enough that I want at least three or four identical sets on the film just in case. Now I don’t have to keep reopening the side door and pressing one of those infinitesimal buttons to do so.

Finally, I never did like three step auto bracketing. I find that the auto exposure plus one more frame half a stop over is all I ever need to get the right exposure. Now I’ve set the camera to do that automatically.

I also love the little number imprint that it burns on the film leader. It has obviated the need for marking each roll of film with a Sharpie pen and having the lab twin check all the rolls. Now getting a shoot into chronological order requires just a loupe to glance at the number and a marker pen for the transparency box.

I am often in dusty places so I find the tightness of closing the camera back (due to rubber O ring seal) most reassuring.

I hate to admit it but this is the first camera I have ever dropped in my entire 35 years of photography. It fell to tar macadam pavement with the 80 to 200mm lens on it. (I turned while wearing a big hip sack and knocked it off a cart.) The lens took the brunt of the blow by partly separating from its mount. (In for repair now.) But the 1v body suffered no problem at all other than a small ding to the side door which now “catches” as it opens. Yes, I have taken many pictures at f1.2 with my 85 since and all is sharp. No misalignment. Of course all the electronic functions work fine. I wish I hadn’t tested the camera in this way; but it’s very reassuring to know it could survive so well.

This is clearly a camera that was designed as the result of a great deal of input from professionals. To my fellow professionals who, like me at first, read about the 1v in the literature and thought it provided only minor improvements over the EOS 1n or EOS 3, please look harder. I think you will find it a most gratifying step up.

Strength:

-very well built
-good feel
-10fps (advantage, although most people won't need frame rates that fast)
-good weight makes the camera balance out with most L lens well
-easy to use
-wide lens selection

Weakness:

-point focus harder to use than nikon's
-must move eye around in viewfinder to see the whole picture although it shows 100%

This is a great camera for the price. It's Canon's top of the line pro SLR wit extremely acurate metering. I recently switched from Nikon to Canon and have yet to regret a second of it. The L lens is a lot cheaper than Nikon's AF-S while sharper and has better contrast. Custom and personal function on this camera is great also. I recommend this camera to any serious photographer.

Strength:

Accurate and fast focusing.

Weakness:

Not for wimps.

Sold my ancient Contax setup two years ago and bought a Rebel 2000 and some good lenses, mainly to shoot sports. After about a year of that I decided what the hell, let's go all the way and get a 1V to use with those "L" lenses. Of course it's like going from a Beetle to a Mercedes, but the focusing is so much faster and more accurate. I've had it for a year and am still trying new things. I also sprung for the EOSLink software. I get lazy about jotting things down, so it is handy to look at the exposure data and try to figure out what went wrong (or right). Among other things the EOSLink also lets you determine the time and date a photo was taken, flash data, camera mode (P, Av, etc.), and focus mode (manual/auto).

Customer Service

Somewhat negative experience, which seems to be the exception based on what others have said about Canon. Took about a month to repair, which is longer than I expected. At the end they said they had been waiting for a part, which isn't what they said during earlier inquiries.
