Strength:

Solid feel, very fast AF speed (many times the shutter went off so fast after achieving focus), evaluative meter works well in numerous tricky situations. Great handling, especially the "home position" button.

Weakness:

AF does not seems to work well with 540EZ especially in dim indoor situations. PB-E2 does not have the option for 2 2CR5 batteries which gives the same voltage as 8 AA's but much lighter in weight. View finder info does not change with different format of viewing (vertical/horizontal).

A solid camera that's worth every single cent. Much better in value-for-money than EOS-3.

Strength:

Best viewfinder ever on a Canon SLR. Focus and film transport are fast, quiet, and smooth. Seems very well built, especially compared to the EOS3 that I traded in.

Weakness:

I hate 2CR5 batteries. They are expensive, hard to find when you run out in the middle of nowhere, and the don't last long with the IS lenses. The PB-E2 is nice but adds too much weight to an already heavy camera

A great camera that feels like a tank and offers every feature a working pro or serious amateur could want. When I switched from Nikon, I bought an EOS3 but I was not impressed with the feel, the viewfinder, or the ECF (which didn't work at all for me.) The -1V outshines the -3 in every way and is well worth the extra $$$.

Build, computer link, Canon lenses

Weakness:

Price and weight

Compared to the EOS 3 this body feels more robust and substantial. The feel and sound of the shutter release is great. Layout is similar to other EOS pro cameras, so no need to relearn. Ergonomically, I really like this camera. Canon listens to its customers as some complaints about the 3 were fixed (eg. battery indicator, side door, threaded cable, eyeshade, etc.). I think the price though is too high, and not sure it is worth $700 more than the 3. But if you have the bucks, live in extreme climates or a pro this is the one to get.

Strength:

The new EOS 1V is very impressive. For me the most exciting improvement is the viewfinder and focusing screen. I found the focusing screen in the EOS 1n to be soft and very hard to manually focus in flat or dim light. Also the five autofocus sensor boxes were distracting to me. The new camera, thank God, solves these problems with a bright, sharper focusing screen. Gone are the AF senor boxes which were replaced with projected sensor boxes that can be programmed to illuminated for only a moment when AF is activated.Thank you Canon. Autofocus has been improved to acquire quicker and track faster. Mirror block during exposure has been reduced and is most impressive during fast motordrive sequences. A new "home button" that can be programmed to return AF to any preselected sensor is a nice surprise. The new slightly heavier camera has impressive fit and finish and feels good in the my hands. I'm eager to try the wireless TTL flash system. This camera may not demonstrate a big leap in technology but its clearly an improvement over the 1n and that says a lot.

Weakness:

I'am shocked that Canon's new flagship model pro camera with 45 autofocus sensors does NOT have any sensitive cross sensors placed horizontally left or right from the center cross sensor. All of the 7 cross sensors are stacked vertically in the middle of the viewfinder. Who was the genius that came up with that disappointing senor placement. Granted, the 38 non cross sensors have been greatly improved. Still, cross sensors are the most reliable, and serious photgraphers need them for off-center composition. Canon's method of allowing users to move AF sensors using control dials takes some getting use to and is not as quick and effective as Nikon's rear touch pad control. With this new camera the challenge of getting reliable off center compositions during action photography has yet to be successufully solved. Canon needs to add the new "home" AF button to the booster. When shooting verticals you can't get your finger to that button on the camera. Canon's Eye Control focus on other models never was reliable for me, but I hope Canon will put great effort into improving that technology. It is likely their best hope in making a giant leap foreward in off center auto focus for action subjects. Currently the biggest trade off while autfocusing action subjects is critical compostion.

I shoot photjournalism and sports assignments 10 hours a day,5 days a week and the EOS 1v with Canon's excellent lenses sure helps me do a great job.
I'm very happy to have the new camera. Thanks Canon

Customer Service

Somtimes great, other times so-so. The feel of manual focus on lenses is important to me. I like focus to be smooth and easy and I've had a difficult time getting Canon Service to make satisfactory improvements to stiff focusing lenses that I've sent to their Pro Service departments.

Strength:

Better build quality than older EOS, very nice autofocus implementation, nice ergonomics.

Weakness:

Still has known flash limitations, not so light sensitive, heavy & bulky motor booster.

In general i like this new EOS but i prefer my 1nRS for it's speed and better autofocus simpicity, and my Nikon F5 for it better quality.
I don't think that this one is Canon's answer to F5 nor to it's own 1nRS. I'm still waiting for a pro tool and not electronic gadget

Great new meter/computer, autofocus is faster and dead on, great layout. Fast handling, every setting you could ever need, new 550EX flash is a great match,

Weakness:

EOS1vHS, Heavy, no focus assist in low light.

Can't use hand strap along with neck strap, what's up with that???

If you are using an older camera, the new metering and focusing capabilities are worth the trade up. Throw in the software, and custom functions, water resistance, new flashes, and wow, what a system.

OH MAN!!!!! THIS CAMERA IS THE FREAKING MOST WONDERFUL PIECE OF PHOTOGRAPHY EQIPMENT IN THE UNIVERSE. I hate to flood praise, but jeez! I own an EOS-3 that I just bought about 3 months ago, and this camera makes me wish I would have waited. I borrowed a friend's 1v and mounted my 28-135 on it and shot. I have never seen a camera focus faster or be so accurate. I have no experience with Nikon equipment, but as for Canon stuff, this is their best yet. Everything is where you expect it to be and is built very un-Canon like. Anyone want a used EOS-3?

Weakness:

Huh?

Very fast focusing. Accurate exposure. Wonderfully designed. The best thing since, well, ever.

Strength:

Used 1vHS with canon 50mm 1.4 Extremely fast AF. FPS was great with NiMh batteries in PB-E2 and worked awesome for bracketing. Love the multi-point spot metering. Feels really solid in the hands. Manual was much improved. I particularly liked the way the custom functions were shown in conjuction with a particular mode. Shot Fuji Velvia 50 with great results.

Weakness:

Very heavy with the booster, probably should opt for the GR-E2 when not using the booster. The strap with the 1vHS is narrower and does not seem very strong compared to the weight of the camera it's carrying. Would prefer a little wider strap. Quite a bit expense then the 1N

Feels like an armoured tank. Solid feel. Smart placements of controls. If you can afford it, go for it.

Strength:

Lighting quick focusing,100% viewfinder, Easy to use right out of the box. All contols are within easy reach while in a shooting position. Camera is laid out well,

Weakness:

Heavy, Manual could be easier to use.

This is the most impressive camera I have ever used. Balance is perfect in your hands even with a 70-200mm 2.8L lens. It is a heavy camera, but lighter than an F5, Everything is within quick reach in a shooting position and fairly easy to use right from the box if you are familiar with Canon products. It does not have the eye control of an Eos 3, but you can manually move the focusing point with a dial by the shutter release. There are an extensive amount of controls with this camera so be prepared to spend hours with the manual. The manual is not particularly user friendly either, but still quite adequate. Focusing is so quick it is almost unbeliveable and is virtually silent. The film advance is fast even without the booster, a light touch on the shutter is needed here.I am quite impressed with the fit and finsh of the camera. It is a truly well made product. Canon out did themselves this time.
