Strength:

Non steel body. I usually don't knock my camera around, and I was told it's quiet tough. I don't think it'll last a 4 foot fall on a pavement as my old AE1-P did, and I don't intentd to find out. After shooting in sub zero degrees with all steel lens, body and tripod, I can say that plastic should not be underestimated. Very ergonomic. Accurate AF. Price, metering. I took a picture using evaluative metering of my sister. It was a rather difficult shot. Even though the light in a part of the picture was reflected through a mirror, one lamp was present, and a dark closet was next by, the metering was perfect. I didn't even bracket. The pop flash should be taken for what it is. You don't have to use it, but in haste it can bring what would have been missed. Focuses fast enough for my needs in nearly any light, with the sigma 24-70 f/2.8 (not HSM). Has quiet a bit of custom functions which allow all the flexibility you need. Rather nice choice of predefined picture taking. I found close up with non MACRO lens to be disappointing, the flowers were out of focus. Compatbility with sigma HSM and all canon EF lenses. Silent mirror and engine. Very silent rewind.

Weakness:

The AF assist light has problems with large lenses. My Sigma 135-400, even without the hood, can't focus at all using AF assist, because a portion of the light hits the lens itself. When AF assist isn't needed, it focuses nicely for non HSM/USM. The AF assist isn't IR which will ruin candid shots. It's not weather resistant, and ECF isn't vertical. More focusing points could be nice.

Let me say that I have shot with it quiet a bit in a rather short time, in all hot conditions. The cold conditions will be examined in the winter (not in Israel, it's never really cold in here). Overall an impressive camera for the buck. Solid, and has swift autofcus in most conditions. Naturally, it hasn't got all the traits that the EOS3 has, but think hard if you really need them. Buy it used 10 condition if you can, at BH. it looks and feels brand new, but the price is less by at least 20%. Who shouldn't buy it: People who want basically point and shoot camera. Pro's who need the fastest AF possible, or need to shoot while being in snow or rain. The manual strictly says that this camera should not be used in rain or snow. My policy with cameras is: Don't abuse, don't break. Who should buy it: Most photojurnalists, enthusiats, students who can afford it, anyone "serious about photography". Good enough for wedding photographies, tracking animals (usually you don't shoot animals in the rain or snow. If you work for National Geographic, well, I'm sure they'll give you something more durable). Now let's see why I have chosen Canon over Nikon. The answer is this: I like to shot in the rain. When I would be able to afford it, I'd like to buy weather resistant lens. I contacted Nikon USA and asked which lenses were weather resistant. The answer was that they don't make weather resistant lens. Canon was chosen over Minolta because of the USM and HSM lenses. Although I currently have no silent motor lens, I intend to upgrade in the future. I've seen USM lens in action and the quietness is a big bonus. Balances well with the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and handles the sigma 135-400 with ease.

Customer Service

In Israel, Canon's rep. service is poor. I took my old AE-1P for repair. They asked 120$ for repairing the light meter. I refused their offer and went to Golden Camera. I paid 70$ for the repair of th

Relative Heavy weight, silent operation.

Weakness:

The built in flash does not allways rise, but when it wants to come to work does a pretty good job.The dial command is broke and no "clik"sound is made between the features changing.

Before I begin writting any opinion, I'd like to ask any owner of an Eos5 camera to mail me the exact meanings of the 16 custom functions that I can't enjoy of.I would appreciate an effort to help a photographer that can't use the full enhancements of his camera. THANK YOU!

Strength:

Best bits have to be the eye-control focus (hey, it may be a gimmick , but if your gonna have a gimmick have this one), also ''stealth'' mode, my EOS10s sounds like a road traffic accident in comparison (would''nt get rid of it though)

Weakness:

Life''s too short for them (same goes for the battery power) and they are too minor to take up your time reading about them.

I wont bore you listing the features of this camera as they are already well covered on this site. Comments: A first class camera and when mated with it''s intended 28-105USM lens it really comes into its own. I have been after this camera for a couple of years, despite its age, and finally bought one about 6 months ago. It is used mainly for weddings and sport photography and has always re-produced first class images (you can easliy put your trust in this cameras ability to read the conditions correctly). I did use it for a short time with the 28-80mm-nonUSM lens (a fine lens in it''s own right, a paperweight when stood next to it''s USM cousin). I have added the VG10 grip (essential), but £20 for the optional strap !!! come on guys. Despite the negative comments I have read about the usefullness of the built in flash I could''nt do without it. I also use the Cobra 700AF flash unit with grip and have found that it performs very well and makes a great substitute for the Canon unit (the similar spec canon would cost about the same as the EOS 5 did). In summary I have to say that until we can buy an EOS1D without selling off various family members to raise the cash then this will remain the one to beat If you buy it as your first SLR then you dont know how lucky you are, if you got one after decades of using countless other makes/models then you will already what I mean.

Weakness:

Eye control focus (probably due to ignorance of the user more than defective manufacturing)

I shopped for a year to replace the workhorse Pentax K1000 I had used for years. I researched every camera and narrowed it down to the Canon A2E. That was 7 years ago and I am still just as happy with it now as I was then. I doubt I will ever get another SLR. I was impressed by the shutter speed, the fact it was the only camera that could go completely manual (I have a nasty habit of not believing the camera knows best :-)) and then convert to "green box mode" where it does everything. The flexibility of this unit covered vast territory and was reasonably priced for the features it provided. I would recommend adding it to your list of cameras to look into.

CONTROL DIAL!! CONTROL DIAL!! CONTROL DIAL!!

Outstanding camera EXXXXCEPT......the d*** command dial broke on me. Like an idiot I tried to fix it myself and managed to botch the effort quite well. The Canon authorized repair shop took the pieces off my hands and repaired it for $60. Quite a bargain! I love the ergonomics. I love the pictures I get from this camera though IMO the evaluative metering cannot be relied on too much.

Customer Service

Canon has ignored my pleas for help re the control dial problem. I think this design flaw and their failure to toe up to the line is a black eye on their reputation.

Strength:

fast motor drive. fast autofocus. custom function 4 button allows seperate autofocus from shutter release. good with VG-10 grip value for money. great features.

Weakness:

flash exposure usually overexposed. should have a larger viewfinder instead of a built in flash. no E-TTL. other minor annoyances.

I am quite pleased with this camera. It has many good points, but quite a few bad points which are quite annoying, but I don''t feel the need (or have the cash) to upgrade to an EOS 3 or 1v just yet. The first thing that struck me about this camera is that it has everything I need for my profession - PC socket, 5fps motor drive, vertical controls, quiet operation, 1/8000 maximum shutter speed, spot metering, 1/200 flash sync, auto bracketing, etc. I think this is the best camera in its price range, and it can still hold it''s own despite the fact that it''s 10 years old.

Strength:

Eye controlled focusing, 5fps autowind, ease of use, handling.

Weakness:

Eye focusing does not work vertically or in green square mode. VG10 grip has no space for AA cells

Brilliant camera for the money, still beats the EOS 30/33 which I tried in the shop and found to handle less well. The Nikon F80, which was my other shortlisted camera was a complete sloth in comparison. I''m shooting film faster than before with a better ''hit rate'' of good photos and it''s so slick and easy to use. The eye controlled focusing took about 4-5 calibrations, but it was quickly working fine and now I can relax and look at the subject rather than the squares. Now I''ll never miss a photo opportunity due to poor focusing or AE lock faffing or hand cranking!! Amazing to think that this camera is in it''s 10th year of production, it''s so advanced!! I bought the camera with the Sigma Aspherical 28-200mm which I find handles quite nicely even if the focusing isn''t USM standards. Doesn''t quite get 5 stars for overall rating, I''ll leave that until I can afford a EOS 3 or 1V.

Strength:

Wide range of features;
Durable

Weakness:

Sometimes under-exposes (especially when use evaluative metering and Fuji Velvia); No real alternative power supply (Forget the stupid BP-5 with its disturbing coiled cable!); Auto film rewind after 36 exposures (Only Canon knows why!)

If you want to be pro-looking, this is the cheapest one from the big three (You have to put on the VG10 of course). Besides, it might still be one of the best buys today, 7 years after its debut. Great features and rugged construction. If it takes AA batteries and shoots more the 36 exposures, it will be a perfect prosumer level camera!

I have used this camera for 6 years. As I am a mountain climber, I used it in exreme conditions. I fell many times, and it has not broke at all. It can survive 50 degree of Celsius in a blizzard... Who want to get more? A great photographic tool, fast and easy to use even with closed eyes :)

Light Leak!

I bought the camera because of my past experience with EOS 1 & 630, two workhorse never needed any service & performed flawlessly for the last 10+ years. Trusting EOS "too much", I didn't test fire a single frame & waited couple month before heading toward Zion Nat'l Park & wasted $150+ worth of slide on the new EOS 5, B&H wouldn't exchange the camera for me(quite disspointed) & since I sent the camera back to Mack, they forwarded the camera to the manufactured service center...last week! Estimated turnaround time -- 3 & 1/3 month since I first sent the camera back late June!!!
Em... if I don't get my camera back before my next trip 9/1, I'll give a one star review for this camera & try out Nikon for a change.
Two stars for EOS 1 & 630!
