Buttons are all in the right place. Lightweight. Fast enough for the work i do. professional features at an affordable price.

Weakness:

The flash pop-up and self-timer buttons are reversed from my elan ii. the system of remotes is elaborate and expensive to put together.

i upgraded to the a2e from the elan ii this fall and haven't had any problems so far. the five fps have proven to be adequate for many of the situations i shoot, including mountain bike and skiing photography. the vg-10 is an absolute must have for anyone serious about sports photography. if you've never had a shutter release on the vertical axis, you'll be amazed at how much you use it.

one of the nicest features over the elan ii is the focus lock function, which allows you to pre-focus and lock without turning off the af. you can even use the af to do the prefocusing. a serious bonus in sports photography.

haven't used the eye control focus yet, so can't say much about it.

Upgraded from an Elan (9/99 and am inpressed with the Eye controlled focus. So easy to use even with all the features it contains, all my pictures have been turning out great.

Weakness:

None.

This camera just feels good in your hands, weight is just right and the Eye Controled Focus is right on. Almost didn't get the ECF but at the last minute I changed my mind and am glad I did. Haven't got the VG-10 Grip yet. This camera is quiet, it rewinds before you know it.

Upgraded to AF after years of F1's, AE1's,A1. Painful to give up my old FD lens collection (still got them and still use them!) Feels good in the hand - recommend the VG!

Weakness:

Control knob died after 3 months but no other problems. Need to reporgram the Eye focus often to cope with glasses. Feature seems to work OK even with polarized prescription sun-glasses!

Only real problem is the LONG lag between shutter button and shutter action. Takes some getting used to when switching from older mostly mechanical cameras to the new AF models. Lag is noticable even when manually focusing the lens

I have an EOS 5 since 1993 and I have to say that I love it. the main control dial still doesn't broke as other have related (I try to be very carefull). The inhability to use infrared film don't bother me as I never had used before and I'm not planning to use it. It is greatly compensated by the hability to precisely count frames and so allow me to change film in mid roll and to reuse them later. How many photographers will use Infrared films?
The built in flash proved me an usefull feature when allow me to travel light and makes an great emergency flash. I agree that outer units are more full featured and powerfull, but I'm talking about emergencies.

Weakness:

I didin't have any problem with the eye control until I changed my glasses for one with an anti-glare coating. Now sometimes the system not blink the correct focus point I'm looking at, but it's not a system problem, just my glasses and when I really need the ferature, I use my old glasses. I miss a display back light function.

Great camera. In the beginning I was thinking on the Nikon F90, but I'm very happy that I'd choose Canon's as some time after I purchased mine the F90 was upgraded and this could make me very angry, and the EOS 5 is still here what is a proof of its attributes.

5 fps, 1/8000th shutter speed, built in but limited flash, eye controlled focus, tons of features and custom settings.

Weakness:

Main dial broke after 18 hours of ownership.

After comming off a completely manual ricoh, the A2E is a godsend for the most part. It's 10 times the camera I have been using. The motor drive (5fps)is plenty fast for wildlife photography, and landscapes.

The eye controlled autofocus feature is useful about 75% of the time for me. But there are some limitations to it such as the need for texture on the subject etc.... I picked up the vertical grip and love it's usefulness in fact I'd consider it a necessity. But I wish that the vertical grip could be used to house another battery or even accept AA batteries when the standard photographic battery dies.

The flash is so so. Decent enough to capture those "special moments" when the family is gathered around the x-mas tree. Other than that I don't think it's very useful for too much else.

My small hands fit the grip quite well. Matter of fact the vertical grip fits with equal comfort. And the camera is not too weighty. However, I'm going to pick up a better, more comfortable neck strap. The one that came with it is OK for now.

My only real complaint is the main dial broke 18 hours after I received the thing. I called customer service and they seemed very helpful but I have not sent it in yet because I wanted to use it over the holidays. This is a follow up to a review I did a month or so ago. My only problem then with the unit was that the main command dial went out on me after the first 18 hours of ownership. Basically I could only use the command dial one way. I was able to advance the shutter speed all the way up to 1/8000 of a second but unable to adjust the shutter the other way. The same goes for apateure and other functions controlled by the command dial.

Since then I've sent the camera in for repair. I had no problems getting them to repair the problem. Today I finally got the camera back from Canon ( it took over two weeks). After a few minutes (about 5 minutes or so)of playing with the command dial and ensuring that it was repaired correctly the very same command dial that was broken, broke on me again. So now I'm back to square one where the command dial is concerned.

In the almost 2 months that I've had the camera it's been broken more then it's been in proper working order. The things gets one star from me and that's only because I can't go any lower.

Customer Service

pretty good over the phone, but I've yet to deal with the service center itself.

The camera is lighter than the Nikon N90s. It also includes features that aren't standard on the Nikon likemultiple exposure, and exposure bracketing. The built in flash is very handy for casual photography. Another useful feature is the eye controlled focus which helps you in achieving better composition.

Weakness:

No serious problems.

Excellent Camera for an intermediate tp professional photographer. However, it does not ionclude dateback and exposure compensation is in 1/2 steps.

Strength:

This is a very effective camera. With the VG-10 grip added, the weight and balance of the camera is perfect. The durability of this camera can't be questioned. I've shot football, b-ball and other sports, and my A2e has been pummeled plenty of times. It still works perfectly after five years though.

Weakness:

Eye controlled focus is a little slow for some events. Another major problem is that the A2e has one of the slowest release time lags in the industry (105ms). If you're switching from another system this can through your timing off for a while.

This is a great intermidiate camera for a wide range of users. A great "school" camera for photojournalism students as well. At this bodies current price it's a great value and gives someone an excuse to buy into a Canon system at a reasonable price.
