Model Reviewed: EOS A2E/EOS 5

Strength:

Lightweight, good on batteries, good placement of controls, fast AF

Weakness:

No problems...Wish it had a more solid feel though. No need for built-in dummy flash

The A2E is a good camera for the price. Their lenses could be made a bit stronger but their pro lines are exceptional and would rival ANY Nikkor.
If I was moving from strong intermediate to semi-pro, this would be a good one to get!

Customer Service

None needed, they have a rather weak website for all that's worth

Strength:

Easy to use. Flash fill is very nice. Like having the adjustability of all controls. Autofocus was a problem until I learned the limits of performance. The eye control is a nice gimmick. Mine has been very reliable. A few friends have had problems with the on-off control but some of them could wreck a bowling ball.

Weakness:

Seems lightweight and somewhat cheap. Pop up flash is Ok for close work. Eye control focus is almost worthless. Doesn't work in the vertical position. VG-10 is extremely nice. Would like a manual depth of field button like on the 1n and older 650. The eye controlled depth is another gimmick. I shoot 85% verticals. Eye control is a gimmick (did I say that already?).

This camera convinced me to go to autofocus and abandon 4 Canon F-1's, an A-1, 2 AE-1P's an AT-1 and lenses from 20mm to 400mm. Need I say more?

Customer Service

Haven't used it with this camera but Canon has been superb in the past.

Strength:

Very quiet, pop up flash for fill ins, fast rewind, good auto focus.

Weakness:

eye control focus and how can one remember all those custom feature numbers

Had this camera since early 90's when they first came out. Never had any problems even though I never use a camera case and am pretty rought on it. My flash stopped popping up so I am getting a new camera as this one has done a lot of work. Will get an A2 this time as the eye focus thing has never worked that well for me.

Strength:

Fast AF. Silence. Build in flash able to cover fill in very well.

Weakness:

Battery consumption is high...maybe I tend to try out the 5 point focusing.

For that price, it is the best camera in it's range.

Customer Service

Customer sevice in Singapore is very helpful and efficient.

Strength:

Accurate Eye focus, good handling, loads of features, reliable, solid body. Great vertical grip. Superfast and silent autofocus with Canon lens.

Weakness:

Stiff main dial. Irritating focus beep set on after change battery. Shutter is noisier than EOS100. Tend to underexpose.

After trying out Canon and Nikon, decided to go for Canon for the ease of handling, which allows a shorter learning cycle.

I got the EOS100 first, then decided to acquire the EOS5 after a quick test in the camera shop.

Still love both Canon. EOS100 had been serviced for the shutter. EOS5 still fine.

Strength:

Wonderful design--couldn't have been more ergonomically built!
Eye-Control focusing is a dream for me and works smoothly every time.
Fast top shutter speed of 1/8000 and flash sync of 1/200.
PRICE!!!!
5fps built in motor drive is unbelievable.
Vertical Grip makes shooting easier than ever.

Weakness:

weak built in flash but I rarely use it anyhow.
camera refuses to activate external infrared focus assist devices (as in the one built onto my 540 EZ flash),

I'm so sick of hearing people griping about the d*** control wheel on the EOS A2E as the previous reviewer from "Vukovar" (where ever the hell that is) has. I have found the wheel to be quite sturdy so I wish everyone would just get off this issue and keep in mind that the purpose of this forum is to help other prospective camera buyers decide which photo equipment suits their purposes best. If all of these oagers would stop carping for a moment and just read the freakin manual that came with the camera, they might see that MOST of the alleged "weakness" that they aver to are the result of nothing other than USER ERROR and LACK OF PHOTOGRAPHIC TALENT. Sure, if you push and pull on the control wheel like a Gorilla, of course it will break! But that holds equally for any precision instrument that's abused.
The bottom line is that this is the best 35mm SLR body that you can buy today for the money. It has more features, more intelligent matrix metering, faster auto-focus, a faster film-drive (5fps with no booster--IN YOUR FACE NIKON!), and better overall handling than it's $800 Nikon made competitor (the N90). This camera meets the professional grade Nikon F100 head-on in 85% of its specs yet can be had for 1/3 of the price. If you are and advanced amateur like me (i.e. you don't shoot for a living) and aren't planning to attempt to freeze a Doc Gooden fast-ball anytime soon, then I strongly recommend that you buy this camera +the VG-10 grip. If you are willing to put in the time needed to learn how to use this fabulous tool correctly and efficently, it will pay back tenfold in your future photographic endeavors.

Strength:

Value for money, 5fps drive, 1/200 flash sync, eye controlled focus, intelligent use of metal and polycarbonate giving a good balance between strength and weight. I appreciate the built in flash to bale me out of trouble when I'm caught out without my external unit. Spot meter is a very welcome addition. EOS autofocus system is superb.

Weakness:

Looks. I am completely unashamed of the fact that I appreciate cameras as art forms in themselves. This one's about as aesthetically pleasing as a horse's rear end.

I've had this camera for 6 years now and for me it has been just about the perfect unit. If you consider yourself a serious photographer and require a strong, highly specified camera, but don't want something that requires a trailer to move it around or costs more than most people make in a month, you should strongly consider this camera. The EOS 3 is well worth a look also, but as its the "latest and greatest" costs about twice as much for few real advantages (I think).

Strength:

Shutter and film advance are very quiet.
3 metering modes and all of them very reliable.
Fast and silent eye controlled AF.
5 fps film advance speed.
Lots of custom functions.
Great ergonomics: this camera fits my hand like a glove, especially with the VG 10 attached.

Weakness:

Eye controlled DOF preview is a nice gimmick, but sometimes works when you don't want it to. For instance when making your composition and you happen to look at the upper left side of your focusing screen.
Accessories (cable releases, eye-cups etc.) are very expensive. (But sometimes they are not; see under "Customer service.")

A great camera and notwithstanding the few weaknesses I mentioned I give it a 5 star rating.
This is a camera I will be using for years to come.

Customer Service

Very good. I once lost the eye-cup two days before I went on a trip abroad. Phoned customer service and they sent me one free of charge (normal retail price $ 30,-).
