Strength:

It's an EOS
Eye controlled focusing

Weakness:

The stupid 2 tone finish
Non-zooming flash
Noisy (for an EOS)

Well, I hate the finish. I've seen all black ones in France that look great, but I HATE the finish.
However, the looks don't effect the results. A great camera, following on well from the EOS 100, with just a few minor niggles - the non-zooming flash (a bit mean, Canon) and the extra noise compared with the 100 are my main gripes.
ECF works well for me, and the control layout is great. Don't like the handgrip/batt pack much, so I don't use it. A good solid choice for most people. Just wish mine was black!

Strength:

With BP-50 it's chunky and feels good in the hands, otherwise a bit too small for me.
Plenty of features, though not all useful (for me at least)
Mid-roll rewind.
Very nice to look at!

Weakness:

Too much plastic!
Eye-operated system drives me nuts!
Kit lens 28-80mm is rubbish.
No PC socket.
Tends to do all the work for you.

I've hardly used the camera, so I couldn't really say. It feels a bit flimsy, and generally does too much (!) for my liking, and makes me lazy!
However, with the addition of the 28-105mm lens it's much more respectable. Just prefer mechanical stuff, I guess!

Strength:

Fast easy to use controls, perfect metering after several tests, fast accurate focusing, 2cr5 batteries last forever, and on and on and on!!!

Weakness:

Wish I could use exposure lock, fe lock, and depth of field preview without changing custom function settings. also I wish I could see a little more in the view finder, a little wider field of view would be good.

Despite what everyone seems to think, the "silver paint" on the camera is solid aluminum alloy. More people should consider this a "professional series" camera, It's not a starter camera although it is simple enough to use that way in it's auto modes. It's a shame to see it discontinued and I hope the elan 7 lives up to it and shows some improvements.

Customer Service

None needed, despite two horrid accidents. The first was lens down into concrete and the second was a trip 60 feet down a rocky bank into the Straigt River, tripod attached!!! Both times all I lost was a polarizing filter!

Strength:

Great ergonomics! Canon found a way to make this feature-rich camera easy to use.

Weakness:

NONE...for all but a very specialist group.

The only thing better for the money is the Elan 7. If you're new to serious photography, look no further.

Customer Service

Never had to use /-)

Strength:

1. price
2. EOS!
3. Built in flash (although its not very strong)
4. lots of settings, and manual control, while still offering auto everything.
5. I found it easy to figure out.

Weakness:

1. Plasticy feel.
2. nothing else comes to mind.

I had a fierce debate whether I was going to buy a Canon, or a Nikon, and I am happy with my decision. This camera is my baby, I take it everywhere, autofocus is great, manual control is wonderful, but I would recommend against the 28-80USM it comes with(yuck!). despite its plastic feel, it seems like it could take a beating, which in my case it unfortunately has, but it still works. I'd recommend it to any photo student who wants manual control, good autofocus (with a canon USM lense of course) and lots of settings to play with.

Customer Service

Never had to use, very reliable camera.

Strength:

Good weight, feels even better with the BP-50 pack. Reliable metering, eye control for Elan 2e works flawlessly if calibrated carefully...meaning don't let others use your channel...it learns. (#1 for glasses, #2 for contacts, #3 for contacts with sunglasses for me works great!) Never misses a beat. Works great with 300mm + Canon lenses.
Best thing about the camera is how quick and solid the focus point selection in AI Servo is. POW! there it is!

Weakness:

Focus point indicator in low light needs work...can't tell which one is lit when in eye control mode. Location of IR assist light needs another placement...hand is in the way.

The Elan 2e is a pleasure to own and use, but the company support is enough to make you want to shoot with something other than a camera. The eye control is a joy to use, and I keep it in that mode exclusively, because it's that reliable for me.
I'd buy a second one for sure if the opportunity arose.

Customer Service

None as yet...Canon headquarters is a joke, describing solutions to clearly worded inquiries incorrectly time after time.
Guys at the shop where I bought it call this the "Canon Code...rarely right and mostly wrong." Other than that, there's lots around and most of the techs I spoke to say there won't be a problem if something goes wrong.

Strength:

The eye controlled focus and depth of field previews are wonderful. I'm also finding that the preset modes are invaluable and have improved the quality of my pictures.

Weakness:

I don't find the dials on the back and behind the shutter button all that convenient. I thought the users manual was a little cryptic and difficult to follow.

It's a great camera. It's unfortunate that Canon has stopped making it, and replaced it with the much more advanced and much higher priced 7E. So now your only choices are the Rebel or the 7E. There really needs to be a mid-range. Go get a IIE while you can!

Played with the N70, but I was just SOLD on the eye-controlled focus and have been a long time Canon user (point and shoots previously) so I stayed brand loyal.

Strength:

Too numerous to list

Weakness:

Lack of a pc terminal. I will forever be scratching my head over this one.

What more can I say then what others have already related here? After twenty years of faithful service from my old AE-1 (which looks like it's been through hell and back, but is still functional!), playing with my wife's Rebel and a rediscovered love of photography, I opted for this generation's version of that old Canon classic. Wow! Apart from the puzzling lack of a pc terminal, this is the perfect SLR. If there was any doubt, I am a Canonite for life! Time to start saving for a 7e...

Weakness:

I upgraded my EOS 500N to ELAN IIE (50E) to have the manual focus option to select the Al Servo AF instead the automatic from EOS 500N also the Eye control focus. It works fine with Sigma 28-200 lens and Speedlite 380EX flash. I added the BP-50 that improve the handling.
