Strength:

Ligthweight.
Great assorment of accessories.
Fairly fast focusing.

Weakness:

Some of the nomenclature is beginning to wear off.
Canon accessories "are" expensive.

Has more features/functions than what most people will ever take a real advatage of. Nearly all the true creative controls can be accessed by the right hand.
I wish the body were aircraft aluminuml instead of carbon fiber.

Customer Service

Eye Control - sales gimmick and jack up the price

Lucky to have bought the body together with a Tamron 28-200IF Super/B&W skylight for $250 and only 3 weeks old with a roll of film still inside! I used it very extensively with the above lens and the picture always turn out sharp especially with the carl zeiss lens. The standard canon lens are only so so and nothing to shout about. I find the matrix metering a complete comercial hoax. Use the spot metering instead and take readings from the surrounding. The BP50 is a must as it gives a better hold, except AA battery and a vertical release button. Why use eye control when I bought from canon a diopter for $10. Like what other people say, spend the money on premium lens. I intend to buy a 28-70L and after having enjoyed it can still sell at good price in the used market. For Flash, forget about the 350EZ and get the all powerful and versatile 430EZ . No regrets

Customer Service

Very costly even for cleaning of lens

Strength:

-Eye control focus works well
-3 Metering choices, works very well
-Lightweight, good for long hikes
-Stylish (If you care :)
-A whole slew of control usually found in more expensive bodies
-E-TTL flash photography is really amazing when paired with the SpeedLite 380EX

Weakness:

-No true spot metering
-Manual is pretty lame

I picked this up on an auction on e-bay. I was thrilled when I got it (almost new). It came packaged with the SpeedLite 380EX, standard 28-80mm 3.5-5.6 Lens and a camera bag. I've basically used this camera as my first "real" camera you could say, and love it. It really is a wonderful camera that really won't let you down. If you're a beginner, intermediate, or even a professional I believe this camera would be perfect for anyone who wants a solid, reliable, well built, good looking, performance SLR... Either as their main camera or a backup. The list really goes on with this camera.

The downside is that there is no true spot metering. There is a partial spot metering which samples about 9% of image at the focus point. It's less fussy than true spot metering but can't replace it. Other than that I have no qualms about this camera... I have taken it to Japan, BC Canada, England, France and Costa Rica (In which it got completely wet in the rain, it was pissing really.. :) and the Elan IIE never once gave me any troubles. The pictures I've taken with this camera have been in general, very pleasing.

Oh, and the eye control focusing really works, and quite well in fact. If it's dark and there isn't much contrast then manual focus is usually better, but that isn't unexpected unless you want some big IR beam to flash and alert everyone that your going to take a picture! ;P

Go grab this camera if you're looking for a good camera at a good bargain, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I wasn't, that's for sure.

Good Luck.

Strength:

Fairly inexpensive. Thoroughly reliable in over 3 years. Can be used as automatically or manually as desired

Weakness:

Focusing somewhat erratic in low light levels. Useless pop-up flash

It's possible to put the command dial on the "green square setting" and hand the camera to a complete novice or use the thing completely manually. However, there are an assortment of confusing miscellaneous buttons scattered all over the camera body. My 28-70 lens has a 72mm filter ring, and the large front element interferes with the (utterly worthless) pop-up flash. Works great with a Canon 380 flash and Stroboframe Press-T bracket. Its focusing isn't the fastest or most decisive in the world, particularly if you (mistakenly) shut off the infrared focusing aid. I'd love to use this with a 28-200 as a traveling/backpacking/walking around camera, but its front element will interfere with the popup flash too.

2) Many Function
3) Flexible
4) Good Metering
5) Very Durable
6) Low Price

Weakness:

1) Nothing at this price

Considering the amount of money paid for such a good camera, it should be considered. But the coming up of the new EOS30, the price will definitely go down. But it should not posed any threat to this camera.

Customer Service

Strength:

Easy to use
Very good AF
Many features, like mirror-lock and partial metering, 1/4000 sec. exposure time

Weakness:

None

This is a highly recommended body, it is very well built and it operates quickly and produces very good results for the photo enthusiast at a very reasonable price. I have used it for many kinds of photography, and have only had some problems with flash photography and metering of skin tones in sharp sun light.

Customer Service

Has been checked once, has worked well since then.

The best £150 I've ever spent. Person I bought it from forgot to tell Ebay that he had a reserve on it......tough luck for him, great buy for me.

Strength:

Usable custom functions, good film advance (2.5 fps) for beginning action photos, fast shutter (1/4000), three useful types of AF, mirror lockup, tons more...98 page owner's manual!!! Flash was better than expected for a built-in type. Auto exposure bracketing is nice too.

Weakness:

Non-zooming flash (made for 28mm), kind of heavy to lug around all day, but built very well for a semi-pro/serious amateur camera. TTL metering gives slowest shutter time as 1/60th-I would like it to be 1/90th. And flash sync of only 1/125th. Not much else at this price though. The above is not even close to be irritable when compared with what this camera DOES have to offer.

Great serious amateur camera. I would like to sell it and get an A2 for more demanding outdoor situations such as rain and dust that I wouldn't trust the Elan II in, but this camera does a great job at being user friendly and offering professional creative options. The command wheel on the back of the body is very useful as well in manual mode and in bracketing when the shutter is pressed half way down. Overall, one darn nice camera, especially for the price!

Strength:

Good AF performance: fast and reliable, silent
- MLU

Weakness:

-Control lay-out is poor for those who want to use the camera creatively.
- No spot metering.
- Metering system not accurate; lots of incorrect exposures
- Flash system not accurate
- Not built rugged but then you get as much as you pay (no complain here)
- Viewfinder not good for those who wear glasses. Nikon and Minolta are better in this regard

Eos100 had a better metering system than EOSelanII! It made my mind to switch to another brand. So went for MAxxum7 which is the right camera for me.
When i was to buy a camera three years ago,i chose this over NikonF70 because it was less expensive and had MLU.
But it turned out not to be satisfactory for me.

Strength:

Easy to use. Plenty of features.

Weakness:

I've had this camera for about 6yrs, so its getting a little old now. But the lens release button broke and lately I've had problems with the electronics. Sometimes the viewfinder will blink out and then just come back, so unless your shooting a static subject you miss the shot.

Also the eye-controlled function never worked very well in the vertical format.

Even with these problems I'll probably buy the 7e or the EOS 3, so I must like their products!

Very good camera. Durability not as good as what you would expect.
