Strength:

* Low Cost
* High End Features
* Canon's excelent selection of lenses
* Simplie "Point and Shoot" mode as well as full manual
* 7 focus points/36 exposure zones

Weakness:

* No mirror lockup
* No true spot meter

For the money, it is hard to beat the Rebel 2000. It has a lot of features not found in other cameras costing a lot more. Nikon is touting Depth of Field Preveiw in their new N80. That camera will go for about $800. The $250 R2K has it.

This camera is easy to use. You can start shooting without looking in a manual by putting it in Green mode. It is also easy to learn the "advanced" features of the camera, so you can get exactly what you want. I have no doubt that I can get the exact same shot with my Rebel 2000 as I could with a $2000 1v 98% of the time.

Here is my best tip: Get the Rebel 2000, but just buy the body. Do not get a "kit". Canon has these kits competing at K-Mart and the like, so they have to be very concerned about cost. The lens in these kits is where they cut corners. Get the 28-105 lens insted and you will have noticably sharper pictures that you can be proud of.

Strength:

Versatile camera with many features for the price range.

Weakness:

The lens mount is made of plastic. This is not really an issue because if you can afford the 400mm+ lenses you probably would not have this body.

This is an excellent camera for beginners like me. It has many features that the more expensive bodies have, but at a third of the price.

Strength:

Very lightweight, affordable, and GREAT for beginners who want to just point and shoot. For $300 (including a Canon 28-80 3.5-5.6 lens) you just can't beat the price!

The updated "II" lens that came with the Rebel 2k is solid, and it has great focusing capabilities. Its quick, quiet, and can focus down to 1.3 feet! In my opinion-- great for doing Macro shots.

Weakness:

Maybe a little TOO light; all that plastic can't hold up for long. Even the lens mount is plastic... a big negative if you're constantly changing lenses. Even though it seems like a very solid design, I just keep having this feeling that its going to fall apart on me!

This feature-loaded camera is great for beginners like myself who want ease of use, yet good for intermediate hobbyists who want more control over their photos.

Strength:

* Price
* Versatility
* No metering problems at all, especially surprising with such an inexpensive camera

Weakness:

* i have very little confidence in the camera back....the back never feels sealed and i'm always concerned about potential film fogging (although i must say this has never ever happened).
* also, the lens isnt even USM. I would much rather have been given the opportunity to pay more for an USM lens.
* I did need to get the camera professionally cleaned once, due to some sand in the body...maybe this was due to the poorly-constructed back that I mentioned above (yet I must point out that the weekend this happened was full of sand and salt water and I probably had more to do with the required cleaning than the camera back)

Never had buyer's remorse with this one. It was an excellent entry-level camera....I would do it again. I intended this purchase as only a temporary camera to determine if I really was willing to get more invested in photography. I've decided to upgrade to the EOS-3 and stay in the Canon line, thanks to the reliability of this Rebel.

EOS Lenses

Weakness:

Limited functionality (entry level camera)
Plastic lens mount (dunno how it will hold up in the future)

An excellent beginner's camera, I bought this originally to start off with, but I almost immediately upgraded to an EOS-3 to satisfy my requirements. It is an excellent value for the price, a low-cost entry point into the world of EOS lenses. This camera will take excellent pictures for the hobbyist (it's not the body that matters, it's all about the glass), how it would take long term abuse on the other hand... This camera should *NOT* be criticized for having a plastic body!

My pictures are so awesome! The color and sharpness is great! The camera is very easy to use and is great for beginners like myself. If Im not sure about an f-stop or the shutter speed, I can easily flip it onto automatic and snap away.

Weakness:

The 28-80mm zoom lens that usually comes with the camera is a bit unpractical. If I would of known then what I do now, I would of bought the camera body and a seperate lens. It would of been more expensive, but definitly worth it.

The Rebel 2000 is awesome for beginners, easy to use, and it takes great pictures. Its versatility makes it great for beginners or professionals.

Great value and good build quality... a good camera for beginners and intermediates... the film inlay is somewhat awkward in case of the cassette positioning. First results (118 prints) llok promising

Cheap, light weight, good selection of features. Includes DOF (required).

Weakness:

Typical Canon underexposure problem. Wish it had real spot metering, but the partial is OK. No mirror lock.

I use this as a backup for the EOS-3 when using Canon equipment. It is a nice camera, easy to use for beginners yet still has lots of advanced options. Much more than you might expect for the "bottom of the line" model.

Strength:

Wonderfully light - if not almost too light. Exceptional, well-thought out features for a camera in this price range. Depth of field preview and point-of-focus selection great features.

Weakness:

Front-heavy with anything other than a short-range lens. Some concern about its ability to be as durable as I need. No way to rewind and leave leader out - so no way to change rolls mid-way through

This is the first time I've purchased an AF camera - my first foray into this (to me) new technology. I guess I'm a bit of a dinosaur. Picking up the R2K after using an F-1 for so many years, it felt like air. I am very impressed with its features, and its well-thought-out placement. I am used to lugging around two F-1 bodies and six lenses when I travel. After I purchased my R2K, I went to Paris with it and two lenses (28-80 and 75-300) all of which probably weighed less than my F-1 w/ 50mm lens. The resulting photos were all winners.
Unlike other commentaries found here, I love it and am impressed with it as I have been with all my others. This is my 5th Canon camera - I will buy no other brand. I am looking, however, to buy a more pro-level body for my more demanding/rugged outings.
