MY HUBBY GOT ME THIS CAMERA TO TRY TO SPARK MY INTREST AND THIS DID IT. NOW WHEN HE IS TAKING PICTURES I CAN TOO AND I OFTEN GET NEARLY AS GOOD OF SHOTS AS HE DOES WITH HIS F-100. THIS CAMERA DOES ALMOST EVERYTHING A BEGINNER COULD WANT AND YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE.

Strength:

This camera is light weight and very easy to use. It has come way down in price since the intro of the 2000, and can usually be found for under $350 with lense strap and batteries.

Weakness:

A little slow and somewhat questionable exposures with the built in flash.

This is a GREAT beginner camera for anyone wanting light weight and lots of features to grow into. I bought one for my wife so she would stay away from my Nkon stuff and she loves it and takes great pictures. I am confident that this camera will spark a real interest in photography. Happy shooting.

Customer Service

VERY SUSPECT! There has been numerous customer issues with the service department in the past, hopefully it has gotten better.

Strength:

Very light and durable unit. Parts and accessories are available just about everywhere. Optics (other than the 28 - 80 standard lens) are quite good.

Weakness:

Standard 28 - 80 lens is
awfully slow at f3.5 meaning the camera will munch batteries for the
flash. Opt for the Canon EF 50mm 1.8 lens.
Can't push the exposures.

Excellent for the first-timer, and the old timer
who wants more than a PHD (Push Here Dummy) camera. Quite durable with LOTS of flexibility.

None....
People complain about the plastic feel or the slow frame advance, but they just want to pay rebel prices for eos 1n features.

If your just getting into photography and don't want a completely manual camera the Rebel G or 2000 seems to have the best features for the price. The plastic body hasn't been a problem for me it just means it weighs less. Also the autofocus is a bit slow, but when I take sports photos I just use manual focus and anticipate the shot. If your planning on advancing in photography into the intermediate or upper levels, it might be worth your while to purchase the elan 2e or possibly even the a2e. You can find some pretty good deals online for all these cameras.

Light Weight for backpacking! Many functions for the price

Weakness:

The flash is lame. The 28-80 lens is not that good. The exposure function buttons are not user friendly. No depth of field

I have put this lightweight through a lot. Although it may "feel" like it would break easy, it has survived 3 years of long backpacking trips and I have not taken it easy on the camera. I was attracted to the light weight and it is the best entry level SLR out there. I am now considering the Elan II E but it weighs more. Actually for now, I am going to a better lens. Don't get this camera with the 28-80 lens. Pay some more money for better optics, you will be happier in the long run. If you want a lightweight camera for backpacking go with this or the Rebel 2000. You can probably find good deals on the Rebel G these days on some of the online photo stores.

Strength:

Many features for the $$.
Very light weight.

Weakness:

The response time of this camera when firing the shutter can almost be measured in seconds. (I think it is actually around .4 seconds!) This can be very distracting when trying to time shots (like action photography). It can be very annoying.

Flash is weak. The Elan II has a much better flash range.

Flash exposures are not very accurate. The Elan II takes much better flash photography than this camera. This camera's flash is harsh and direct, yielding hot-spots on peoples' faces, while rendering the background as almost totally black. Don't use this camera for flash photography.

If you can live with the delay from after focus lock and pressing the shutter button down, to when it actually takes the photograph, then this camera is ok.
If you can live with over-exposed subjects in the flash modes, this camera is ok.

Strength:

Lightweight and has a nice feel, exposure compensation, viewfinder readouts for everything needed, mutiple metering systems helpful in natural light

Weakness:

no depth of field preview

An excellent camera, especially for the money, continues to produce very nice pictures after a couple of years of frequent use and many backpacking trips. Even with a bottom line lense (28-80) it has performed very well. Auto-exposure modes work ably for those so inclined and creative modes offer artistic control. I couldn't be happier.

OK, I am soooooooo tired of people complaining about the so called crappy plastic feel of this camera. If you talk to any service tech. They will tell you that the technology in plastic composites is superb and thus the camera is lighter without being any less durable. The bottom line, I bought the Rebel G because I needed a light camera for backpacking and this was the best in the price range. For 2 years I have abused this camera EXTENSIVELY, its been tossed around in and out of my backpack. To be honest I have not taken very good care of it and it STILL works like a champ. If you need lightweight and you don't need to be a pro...this is the camera for you!

Strength:

Compact, lightweight and adequate features to satisfy advanced photographers.

Weakness:

Auto focus slow especially with long focal length lenses. Film advance very slow. Time between shutter release and actual shutter opening is too long making it not so suitable for action shots. E-TTL is not any better than previous A-TTL and there is no way to cancel that mode. E-TTL flash has ravenous apetite for batteries because of preflash followed by main flash. FE lock for flash makes up for most of the deficiencies of the flash system.
Viewfinder small and dark.

Great value for money. Comprehensive features.
Requires experience with different lighting conditions to know of its weaknesses and learn from the results. If you know how to compensate for those situations, its performance is very adequate. Avoid the cheap Canon lenses - Sigma, Tamron or Tokina makes better lenses for the same price or less. Buy the External Battery pack and use cheaper Alkaline AA batteries.

It's light... and cheap... and almost idiot-proof, with all the "auto-modes"... you can use it as a point-and-shoot (but then, why not buy one?)

Weakness:

full plasto-crap... I feels like if you bump it by accident against someones soft belly it will brake right in two... slow AF... dark view finder... lot's of good-for-nothing butons and options

DON'T buy this camera if you're half-serious about learning photography... there are a lot of much better all-manual used cameras for the same price... and better quality... if you want to use it as a point-and-shoot there are also better products...

Customer Service

never used it
