Strength:

I bought the newest Rebel 2000 which is even better than the Rebel G.
- fast & relatively accurate autofocus
- lightest SLR on the market
- with 2 Canon Zoom lenses 28-80/75-300 I'm as good as a pro
- CHEAP!
- 12 exposure modes - everything under the sun & moon is covered!
- extremely handy for fast shoots

Weakness:

- No big problems for the price.
- Some limitations - autofocus can jump when you are shooting a moving object. So program 1 point focus and hold camera down.
- somebody mentioned problem of not having shutter lock for night shots. Use the auto timer! I use it for beautiful night shots and I don't need to worry about camera shake.
- this is a light i.e. plastic carbonate camera. DON'T DROP IT. It ain't an old Nikon pro-cam. But then it doesn't weigh a ton of bricks around your neck.

If you have not bought a 35 mm SLR camera and seriously considering one, and just are confused, please follow my advice....
1. Buy a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 body (might as well go one up on the G). Leave out the lens.
2. Buy the Tamron or Tokina 28-300 Zoom lens. One lens ===> better than 2 lenses.
3. Connect the two - start taking pictures like you have never done before.
4. Buy a few books on professional techniques or enrol in a course.
5. Buy a tripod - take wonderful night shots in every city you visit.
6. Remember all these pictures in your lifetime. They will last forever.

Strength:

Excellent, easy-to-use design. Well manufactured, with a truly solid feel. Coupled with even a mediocre lense, it can create a near professional picure. More than I expected for the price (about $400 with a Tamron lense).

Weakness:

The jog dial and small function buttons can be a pain, especially when trying to tweek the options in manual mode. Flash is a bit weak, but expected for a full size SLR (use an external flash for that special shot!). Red-eye reduction has malfunctioned a few times, but may be due to improper technique. There's no shutter lock available, for those long night shots, so your hand has a chance of moving the camara and messing up the shot. I only encountered this problem once or twice in the 6 mos. owning it.

This is the best amatuer/intermediate camara that I can think of right now. The price, features and construction are all very hard to beat. It fills the gap between P&S and serious hobbiest photography. It combines the best of both worlds, with the same freedom as pro-SLR's and the convenience of the simplest P&S's. It's also a Canon, so what else is there to say.

Strength:

Canon Rebel allowed me to take pretty good photos most of the time.
I like the various exposure modes.

Weakness:

I got really frustrated with how the camera made "smart/foolproof" decisions about available light, etc. When I wanted to get "artsy" shots, I was locked out of doing so in the pre-set modes.

The Rebel G served me well. I wish it hadn't gotten stolen =( For casual photographers, I think its a fairly good choice.

Strength:

Easy to use on full automatic

Weakness:

Flash not powerful enough for any distance. "Redeye reduction" works half the time.

Not a bad camera if you have time to play with settings in manual modes. Good for snapshots and daylight situations.
