Konica Minolta X-700 35mm SLRs

DESCRIPTION

Minolta's X-700 is a perfect combination of sophistication and simplicity. In P mode, the camera selects both the shutter and aperture for the correct exposure, so all you have to do is focus and shoot. But if you want to take over, there's aperture-priority exposure control and full metered manual exposure control right at your fingertips.

It is one of the most homogenic products whether youre a Pro or amateur or simple user of making photos of high quality! I mean You can have it all in one body and add more if you like. Strength:

Small and lightweight Expandable Tons of great used lenses Low price

Weakness:

No mirror lockup No double-exposure capability Fastest shutter speed is 1/1000th sec

This is an excellent camera in all respects. It's simple to operate, has advanced features that let you be (almost) as creative as you want to be, and can be found for less than a hundred dollars US. The real strength of this camera is flexibility. You can take pictures simply by following a few simple steps, which while somewhat complicated to recall, only need to be done once. You set the camera to "P" mode, then set the lens to the smallest f-stop, then load the film then set the ASA speed, then focus, then shoot. If you use only one speed film, all you do once the initial setup is done is load film, focus, and shoot. Flash photography is just as simple with Minolta's dedicated flashes - attach flash, turn it on, and shoot. You get TTL (through-the-lens) exposure for perfect flash results every time. That being said, the X-700 is also capable of letting you make as many mistakes as you want. You can let the camera select the shutter speed for any aperture you select, or you can ignore the meter and set the shutter speed and aperture yourself. You can do long exposures with a cable release, but two gripes here - there is no mirror lockup and there is no way to do double exposures (without going to great lengths). The lens that is often found with this camera, the 50mm f1.7, is a stellar performer. You won't find glass that good in anyone else's line for the price. To top it all off, the accessory line up for the X-700 is nothing but first class all the way. There's a motor drive with 5fps speed, several powerful and advanced flash units, a multi-function back that lets you take a whole sequence of exposures over long periods of time, and a fully funtional wireless remote system. A great camera that can grow with you. Don't let this beauty slip away if you get a chance to try one.

Strength:

- Many lens available (also inexpensive) - Durable - small consumption of power - Clear Screen - Accurate auto exposure system - EV compensation - Aperature Priority mode - Program Flash - Winder - see the f/stop thru the screen - Slow shutter audio warning - light indication when using the 10-secs self-timer - good for Manual Camera beginner and for professional

Weakness:

- can have a more and more clear body, - no more production.... WHY ??? - Some accessories won't be available today... like the flash, winder.

An excellent Camera provides all basis functions of what I needs. This camera provides many good assistant functions to photographer (i.e. AEL / EV+/- / Bulb / P-mode / Av mode / Winder / Program Flash / Date Back). I used Minolta SRT101b before I purchase the X-700 at 1993, and has enough knowledge on how to operate an manual operated camera without electronics assitant. Therefore, I can have none complain with it. If we compare it to the modern High-end SLR system, the only 2 weakness are : the Screen is not ULTRA fine (in compare to the modern laser matte screen) and 1/60 Flash sync. Some owners said that the screen should read the current Shutter speed setting.... well, I think they should use more of their camera and learn how to 'feel' the shutter dial. Someday, you will know what the shutter speed is without looking at it. The system is much much much better than the previous needle meter. Anyway, Photographer do take photos, not the camera.

Customer Service

Yes, for annual system checking..... We never know what's happening inside.

Strength:

The amount of accessories available, many still manufactured; a solid well designed construction; an excellent bright & clear viewfinder; the Minolta MD lens range; ease of use

Weakness:

It's not the best looking camera, an Olympus OM2n certainly looks nicer. Maybe Minolta should consider designing an X-770s or something...

Lacking in a decent manual SLR, I spent a lot of time looking into a camera that would suit my needs and wouldn't burn a hole in my pocket (like a Nikon FM2 would have). I did most of my searching in magazines and over the internet, but finally getting to finger some particular models in person I decided the choice would between either an Olympus OM2/OM2n or a Minolta X-700. In the end the Minolta one over due to the sheer amount of cheap & better quality accessories you could buy for it. Upon purchasing this camera I found it lived up to every expectation, its very solid and the design is pretty much flawless. I also bought a pair of Minolta lens's at the same time, a one Rokkor PG 50mm F1.4 MC lens and a Minolta 50mm F1.7 lens, both are very well made and the optical performance is increadible. I also own a Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm lens for another camera, and I've got to say I prefere the build quality of the Minolta lens's over the Zeiss lens I own. Optical performance is also very tight, esspecially with the later Minolta lens, although Carl Zeiss lens slightly out performs it. This Minolta X-700 suit's pretty much all my needs at the moment, it's a great student camera. Considering it's performance and how much I payed for it, I'd certainly take it over any mid-range fully automatic SLR. I might consider replacing it with a Minolta Dynax 7 or 9 one day though.

I doubt I'll ever get to try this out.

Minolta don´t have a new fully manual SLR in their program like a updated version of X-700.

I have had this X-700 for two years now, and it is the best I ever have used. I have sold all my AF slr:s but this will stay for ever, I have taken about 1000 pictures now with no failure. After many years of searching for good SLR:s I went back to this, I think it says all..

Light weight, TTL metering, bright viewfinder, program mode, not too expensive, reliable, DOF preview

Weakness:

No mirror lock up, poor material quality

This is a very good camera for beginner to intermediate professional. TTL metering, 360PX TTL flash, 80PX TTL ring flash, aperture priority, these are for pro. Program mode is for beginner. Light weight trade off for poor material quality. Overall is good for beginner but has feature that pro would needs.

Weakness:

Minolta should keep at least one model of manual focus camera in production.

This is a classic. The body is light. The pictures are sharp. It is easy to use from Program mode to M mode. I have been using this camera for since 1984 and it is a workhorse. I must have taken over 5000 pictures with it. I had sent to the Minolta servce to adjust the shutter and clean. Those were just regular maintence. I am very satisfy.

Light weight for an MF, dead on exposure, A USER FRIENDLY machine with Pro quality design and function.

Weakness:

No longer produced.

This is truely the camera for anyone who wants manual reliability, long battery life, duribility, and top MF performance. I may use this camera more than my AF Maxxum xtsi! This is truely one of the best things I have ever had the joy of taking pictures with. It''s both creative and precise handling allow me to ither pick it up and go in auto mode, or in Aperture priority with almost equal speed and a touch of originality. It''s DOF preview button and bracketing ring let me take my pictures before I take them, and the MF viewing screen is large and bright. A pleasure to look through and focus with!

Your Joking

I have owned 2 x700 Bodies scince 1988 and recently sold them to upgrade to an AF Camera because of my failing eyesight. This is one of the best cameras ever made and I trecked through India Russia China and Asia without encountering a single problem these cameras took a lot of punishment and they are bulletproof. The Minolta lenses are spot on and cheap second hand. If you want a manual camera this is the one to get its cheap easy to use and takes great photo''s. It will also last you a lifetime get one.

For beginners the "P" mode will get you going. As you progress to apeture priority and full manual operation you will have the confidence you need to move along with the "art of photography".

Weakness:

You''ve got to be kidding.

This camera has far exceeded all of my expectations. After reading the product reviews on this site I choose the X-700. It became a part of me within an hour. It feels and performs like the champ that it is and has been for over 20 years. During the course of looking for a first SLR I had the chance to check out all of the "new" plastic cameras on the market. I would have gladly paid up to $800 for the right camera. I rejected all. The minute I picked up my $175 X-700 I knew this was the camera for me. Its solid, reliable and by far the best buy for the buck out there.
