Strength:

I upgraded from a N90S and the quality of my pictures has significantly improved. It works extremely well with SB28 flash. Try it once and you will never buy another camera again.

The focusing is extremely accurate and unlike N90S, I can actually rely on the 3D metering on this camera.

I love the red focus indicator and the solid feel of this camera

Weakness:

None

I have owned 4 cameras in the last 14 years and this is the first camera I have truly fallen in love with. I am never buying another camera again. What a joy to use.

Strength:

The grip is so good I can shoot one-handed (after zooming) with my Metz 60-CT4 grip flash mounted, while using my left arm to stop people from wandering into the frame!

Diopter adjustment-(this old photographer is now presbyopic).

The cheapest camera in the Nikon line which syncs at 1/250 and has electronic control of aperture. This is important with wide-range zooms like my Tamron 28-300 (which are all variable aperture) when shooting manual in daylight. Without electronic control the aperture can vary over 1.5 stops.

I get one more frame per roll compared to N90s. (With slides it adds up!)

I like the smaller, harder to move AF switch over the N90s-the N90s one was easy to knock into continuous mode (all the way in) and I lost many shots on several rolls before I put ‘check the AF switch' on my regular mental checklist. (In continuous mode the camera will shoot exactly when the shutter is pressed even though focus is not attained.)

Weakness:

Eats batteries over twice as fast as the N90s, as I get only 10-12 rolls per set of regular alkalines. The specs say otherwise-I need to check into this.

Sometimes (once or twice every eight rolls) I get very severe underexposure with TTL flash when reflective objects like bottles, jewelry, teeth, eyeglasses, etc. are in my party pic photos. Has anyone else seen this? (Never happened with the N90s-same adapter and flash)

If I could get the flash problem straightened, it'd be a solid 5. Missed one wedding couple shot when they were out before the wedding-the only shot of them that night!

I can always buy more batteries...

Customer Service

Arrogant on the phone regarding TTL flash problem-not using 'Nikon' brand flash.

Strength:

Better built than my F90X. Better ergonomics than my F90X.
Better and faster AF than my F90X.
Easy to use and much more quiet than my F90X.
Larger (96%) and more informative viewfinder
compared to my F90X (92%) viewfinder.
Controls are very well placed.

Weakness:

No eyepiece shutter.
Limited bracketing: only 2 or 3 unlike my F90X (with MF-26) which I could do 3 to 19.
Limited multiple exposure: 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9 unlike my F90X which goes up to 19.
No focus priority (freeze focus on F90X).
No interval time which exists on my F90X.
Data imprint with MF-29 is limited compared to MF-26.
No Auto-sequence shot which exists on F90X.
I liked F90X AE-lock and AF-lock buttons seperated.
No long time exposure which exists on F90X.

Great camera and I am happy to have altough some
things I miss and that's why I kept my F90X.

Strength:

Very easy to use for even a beginner like me. The build quality, size (found the F5 huge), features and design is what attracted me to this Nikon model.

Weakness:

Expensive: in Australia the F100 price is roughly 1/6 of the average annual gross income; perhaps a bit over the top, but then again are not the best things in the world.

Being new to photography simply wanted a camera which can take me to the highest skill levels in photography which I think the F100 will. The F100 is a lot more fun to use than the F70 and gives the feel that it will last forever. Moreover, the photographs taken on my recent trip to UK, Spain & Argentina were outstanding. I think the SB-28 and the Tamron Super II 28/200mm combination added to my enjoyment and the quality of the photographs. Now I need to learn developing to add to the fun.

Strength:

solid feel
very intuitive
lots of custom features
AF is fast and accurate in the daylight, but if your subject is very dark , AF has a hard time focusing.

Weakness:

none that I have noticed.

I love my F-100. I dropped it (to my disbelief) when I was in London this past June. My skylight filter shattered but left my 24-120mm Nikkor untouched. The camera body still performs fine. I've had it a year and I've gone thru a lot of film. Nikon products are wonderful , except for their flashes. 2 out of my 3 Nikon Flashes had performed defectively after the warranty expired (how convienent). Still, my heart belongs to Nikon.

Customer Service

haven't had to use them for sending parts away but they have been very nice and responsive on the phone with questions.

Strength:

My experience comes from using, plying with and selling cameras for over 7 years at a Melbourne retail outlet.
Solid cold-metal feel.
Excellent build quality compared to Canon.
Rubber texture is easy to grip and is comfortable.
Excellent Exposure control.
Easy to use with frequently used functions easily accessable with one hand.
Five point focus control is easy to use with joystick and more user friendly than the selction button and dial as with the EOS range (too many focus points). This is probably why Canon have copied this with their new EOS 7/30 camera.
Separate autofocus button for shutter release as for shutter release only is fantastic in many situations such as focus locking with self-timer.
Custom functions are usable and logical.
Exposure system (Matrix, CW, Spot) info displayed in viewfinder.
Simple and uncluttered display.
Focus tracking is excellent and easy to monitor and use.
Flash Exposure is more consistent than Canon's.

Weakness:

Autofocus is a little slower with non-AF-S lenses.
Film advance options dial is difficult to use and seems a little cheap.
- Not much else, as the strengths are why I just recently changed to Nikon.

If you have always had a thing with Nikon's but have been to scared to change because Canon have such great lenses, then I suggest you give it a go. Nikon are comming back in a big way. Expect new lenses very shortly including white ones! Basically, Nikon make the best bodies, Canon make the best lenses (deign only-not performance), and performance is very similar. They are so close as you can imagine. I respect both equally. What can I say, if the lens gives the same quality performance ((as Canon)just a little slower/noisier-without AF-S) but the body feels more professional, then Nikon is the way!

Nikon outdid themselves on the f100,why buy the f5 the f100 is every bit of camera the f5 is.The f100 reconfirms my respect for nikon.

Strength:

Good Build. Accurate AF which does fine adjustments constantly.
Intuitive controls.
Accurate metering.
Great Bokeh of Nikon lenses.
AF more sensitve than EOS 3.
Quiet shutter with no bounce.

Weakness:

Non TTL High-speed sync FP flash.
Fiddly and cheap film advance dial.
No counter for multiple exposure.
No viewfinder warning of multi[ple exposure mode.
No slave mode on SB-28
Battery drains quickly.
A lot of not useful options in custom funtions.

A well made camera which could be made better still. Not the best value but worth the money. Excellent outdoor camera but a pain to use for outdoor portraiture due to lack of TTL FP flash.
EOS 3 recommended for those who does lots of outdoor portaiture at F2.8.
Missing Image stabiliser lens initially but VR soon to come for relieve.
Kodak Ni-MH highly recommended to overcome battery drain problem.
Replace battery immediately when power level drops to half to avoid mirror and shutter lock.
Multiple exposure mode fails sometimes in manual mode (Failed while attempting to take eclipse photos).
AF-S lenses are nice but not necessary. Nikon could have packed in a leader out option for the price.
Big number of custom function menu but actually very little customisation allowed.

Customer Service

Battery drain problems, good service but only centralised in Sydney, Australia. I live 1000kms away.

Strength:

Sturdy construction
Light weight for this kind of bomb-proof body
Fast and accurate AF
Dynamic AF and Lock-on works well
Good range of custom setting making camera very versatile
Bright viewfinder and excellent info display
Controls are logically placed, well designed and intuitive to use
Good fill-flash control

Weakness:

Flash output compensation works only in bracketing
No data back with in-between-frame printing abilty

Gadget freaks should look elsewhere for "gizmo toy cameras" to play with. The F100 is a quality camera with well designed and executed features for the true photographers. Although I don't use Matrix metering normally, but when I do, it gives me consistently good results. This is no doubt one of the best cameras in the market. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Fast autofocus
Excellent metering
Solid feel/build
Good Metering system
Outstanding flash sytem when paired with the SB-28

Weakness:

No mirror lockup
Doesn't have 100% viewfinder
No film leader rewind option

This is an excellent backup to the F5. Same rugged feel, fast autofocus and decent metering. The metering for the F100 is not as good as the F5's RGB meter, but then again the F5 is a $1K more. Most of the work I do is manual with spotmeter. However, there are times when I need fast metering and know that I can rely on either camera's metering. The F100 is nice on long hikes since it's 1/3 lighter than the F5. The F5 is still my primary body, but the F100 is seeing more use depending on what type of work I'm doing. Overall, this is an excellent camera for a pro or serious amateur. I would've give a 5 for value, but I thought Nikon should have had 100% view and mirror lock up for the price. Would also be nice if they had an option for leaving a film leader for those time when you can't carry around two bodies but still want to be able to change film mid roll.
