Strength:

Has worked flawlessly for me since 1986 with over 2000 photo's through it.

Weakness:

Light meter needed to be replaced after camera got knocked into a river.

My favorite all manual camera. Utilitarian dream camera. Paid 350 or so for it new in 86 with a 50mm 1.4. Don't use the 50 that much anymore (like my 24mm too much).

The beauty of the Nikon FM2 lies in its simple philosophy: Here you got exactly what you need to take the best picture in the world, nothing else. It forces you into being a thinking photographer, because you have to take every desicion yourself: The shutter speed, the aperture, the focus. These are the simple rules. Follow them, break them - anyway: The FM2 does exactly what you tell it, whatever the weather. If your pictures suck, you can´t blame the camera. It´s learning by doing. It´s photograpy done by hand - not by computers and microchips. Inside the FM2 you´ll find metal cogs and rubber bands, well proven stuff that works. I´ve been using it for nearly ten years now, and I hardly think about the camera when I shoot. It´s just a tool, the real camera lies inside my head and in my eyes. This is retro photography. You don´t need a FM2 to do it - pick up any still-working crap you find, and you´ll be able to make pictures. Good ones. But the FM2 will stay with you for life. That´s a good thing. My FM2 is beaten, scratched and old - but it´s mine and I like it a lot. But it´s only a camera. If yours still works: Buy more film instead.

Weakness:

No mechanical problems. The camera worked undisturbed in the heat of Madagascar and the cold of Siberia. The ideal FM2 could have a spot meter and illuminated
shutter speed and aperture in the viewfinder, though. But why spend money on an Olympus OM-3Ti when you could buy more film instead?

Does what every other old, cheap, ugly and all-manual camera can do. But this one actually does it every time, wherever you are - for years and years. That´s a good thing. Buy a FM2 and learn to think.

Customer Service
