Strength:

Solid construction, batteries not required (except for metering), fast mechanical shutter speed, solid contruction, lightweight, simple, easy-to-use.

This camera is, mechanically perfect (for lack of a better word). It goes places where others would melt, works way overtime and you can even use Nikon AF lenses with this thing!

Weakness:

Slight problems with the camera back but rectified with a screwdriver since the latch didn't quite catch correctly.

Good camera that works and works and works and works...did I mention solid construction? Well, it's a must if you've already got a Nikon system minus this camera. Excellent for beginners to experts and even professonals where batteries are hard to get.

Strength:

Simple, uncomplicated, mechanical camera that will function without battery power (excepting the meter of course). A great backup to an autofocus Nikon system or serves well as an only body.

Weakness:

None.

Nearly the perfect mechanical camera. The fact that this camera accepts Nikon's autofocus lenses gives Nikon a terrific advantage over the other major AF players, especially in severe conditions. And it's fun to use even if the conditions don't require that you use it.

Customer Service

Just LOVE it for simplicity. Nothing fancy. No need for instruction manual to operate it. Common sense stuff. RELIABLE companion. Its lightweight is a big plus. Owned a black body. Will buy a chrome body SOON. Looking back @ all my photo notes..turned out most of them were taken w/ the FM2N. This says something! I would take no other cameras except the FM2N anywhere in this world. 1/250 flash sync surely is a big plus. Also owned F3HP, F2AS, FG, F4, N70 & Contax G2. Traded or sold most of them, but I wouldn't let my FM2N slipped off my hands. Jamais!!

Weakness:

Only the multi-exposure feature. Sometimes got a little edge overlapping.

I'm in the pilot seat when using this beast. That's why I love it.

Customer Service

None so far.

Strength:

It went around the world with me. Kept it in a backpack without a case (so as not to attract thieves) and dropped it more than once. Never broke down. One day, up in the himalayas of Nepal, i was with a group of people on a 14-day trek. In December, near 4000m, it was so cold everyone's batteries went dead. I was the only one who could take pictures of those beautiful peaks. you certainly don't miss the autofocus in moments like that, eh? owners of every 'fancy' camara in that group were absolutely green with envy.

Weakness:

none. nada. zero.

it's a fully manual camera, so at first you have to practice to get fast and good, but that's the best way to learn photography anyway, and soon you don't miss any of the automatic features on other cameras anymore (except possibly an illuminated viewfinder... but even that problem is solved by the fact that the light meter +0- are LEDs anyway so it doesn't really hurt your ability to take pictures). You end up just spending your money on stuff that really matters: lenses and film. it takes almost all the old and new nikkor lenses (great for saving money on used equipment), has interchangable focus screens, and you can get a 3.5fps motor drive for sports and stuff, plus other goodies. Mine lasted 18 years (the fm) before being stolen, so i just walked into a camera store, spent exactly 10 minutes deciding, and bought another fm2. As long as they don't get stolen, they will work flawlessly under any conditions. If the cost is bugging you, remember that it averages out to something like an extra 0.5 cent per shot over the years, let alone the oppurtunities you will never miss because of reliability. Even if you already have a super-duper professional automatic camera, get this one for a backup. One day you'll need it anyway.

My first SLR was the FM2n about 6 yrs ago. not a problem or whatsoever. Just sheer pure photography, its that simple. From portraits to landscape, night to day, Fm2n is a classic to work with. No problems for dry or wet weather. Excellent robust construction entails Nikon's dedication to SLR.

Weakness:

None

I will trust Fm2n over any other electro SLR. For the very fact, few cameras offer the precision and control like the FM2. The best camera doesn't mean the best pictures. Fm2 however can bring out the best in a photographer.

Strength:

I like it for it's mechanical features: manual focus and exposure, which harken back to the golden days of pre-autofocus photography. Also, it works with all my old Nikon lens. And the exposure system is incredibly accurate -- frame after frame of perfect exposures!

Weakness:

Only with the electric plug for the extension cord for the motor drive, MD-12, which has a tendency to sheer off. This is not a feature I use often, however. Also, the tendency of the battery operated exposure system to die without warning. In all fairness, it takes months of constant use for that to happen. The batteries in the motor drive put an impressive amount of film through before they die also, but they give a little more warning. The camera itself is reliable in a wide variety of operating conditions of heat, moisture, cold and vibration. I've had mine (2 bodies) for years and have no plans to replace them anytime soon (unless Nikon starts giving away M5's!) They are good value for the buck, reliable, steady workhorses.

This camera is a winner. Reliable, sturdy, accurate, easy to use. I would easily consider purchasing another.

Customer Service

Excellent: these cameras can be repaired by any competent repair shop. Nikon runs a factory shop with relatively quick service, esp. for pro's, however, as I haven't need to find out in over 10 years, maybe not!
