Strength:

size, lightweight,easy to learn,top of line features,price and it's a Nikon!!!!

Weakness:

not many, auto focus gets fooled occaisonally.

I think this is one of Nikon's best ideas yet. This camera has features of cameras costing much more. I really like the on demand grid lines, really helps to line up a nature shot! I have a 50mm 1.7 that is extremely sharp! also I have the nikon 28-105. This combo gives me just about all I need for most situations. I sold my N70 to get this one and I don't regret it for a second! there is no comparison. the N80 is the bomb! I would reccomend the N80 to anyone shopping for an autofocus slr. I took this camera to Jamaica with me and the colors it gave me are awesome. Here's a tip. Get some Fuji Superia extra 400 film. the coleos are excellent and it looks like 100 grain! If you are a serious amatuer on a budget, get this camera....hurry before Nikon realizes what they've done and jacks up the price!!!

Strength:

small, light, compact, crammed with aids...the list goes on

Weakness:

ancillary plastic controls stiff and awkward to use, no metering compatability with older lenses, no option to leave film lead out on rewind.

Its an amaizing camera in many ways, its packed full of features to aid the user and squeezed into a very small unit. I'd read the rave reviews, I saw the pictures but was frankly disapointed when finally I got my hands on one. The ergonomics of the body are great, it feels solid alright but the controls are distinctly stiff, more torawds the cheap and nasty rather than quality and durability- more Taiwanese than German if you pardon the comparison.
I bought a Contax Aria 18 months ago out of frustration over Nikon not coming out with a descent all rounder for the price. I thought the time had come, but the 18 months of contax use have had there effect, the Nikon may be a high tech marvel but build quality is way below my expectations. Somebody must have a serious problem in Nikon, if they can get an LCD superimposed on the viewfinder, why can't they include leader out options for the film rewind- its beyond me!
I really wanted to get into Nikon equipment, all the lenses available etc, but its not to be, I can't justify double the price for the F100, we're starting to talk decent digital camera territory once you put the lens on the front.
No, nice try, excellent point and shoot, but this camera isn't as marvelous as I hoped, 3 stars both ways for frustration and lack of overall consistancy, try it in your hands, then the "cheapie" Contax Aria and you'll understand.

Strength:

Ergonomically, the camera seems an extension of your fingertips.

Weakness:

I don't have two!

The proof is in the pictures and mine are coming out better with this system than any I have used before. Notice too, how many others have purchased and are reporting on this camera. It is matched up with the 28-110mm affordable zoom: crisp!

This is a very usable, full featured camera. I made around 50 rolls and it works fine.
This is an excellent camera for the money you pay.

Customer Service

Great.I asked local (Toronto, Canada) Nikon service center (www.nikon.ca) to reprogram my F80 - allow film leader to stay out on rewind. They did it in 5 min, free of charge.

Strength:

small size, fit my hand well.SPOT metering works well for back lighting outdoor potrait.Eos 30 does not have spot metering.
Easy to use.
Film rewind is very fast, compared to my old faithful PENTAX SFX-N.

Weakness:

none found thus far.

AFTER MONTHS OF RESEACH,COMPARING BETWEEN F80 AND EOS 30,I FINALL CHOOSE THIS ONE 3 DAYS AGO IN PENANG. I HOPE MY REVIEW WILL HELP OTHER POTENTIAL BUYERS TO MAKE A BETTER DECISION.
F80
1.3D MATRIX METERING SHOULD BE A BETTER METTER SYSTEM.IT GOT SPOT METERING WHICH CANON EOS30 DOES NOT.
2.LIGHTER.
3.NIKKOR28-80MM ZOOM GOT MICRO .CANON COUNTERPART DOES NOT.CANON 28MM-135MM IS IS TOO EXPENSIVE FOR ME.
3.SLIGHTLY CHEAPER.

EOS30
1.GOT METAL TOP.BUT FOR A NON-PRO CAMERA F80 BUILD IS GOOD ENOUGH.
2.VERY QUIET.BUT IS THIS ESSENTIAL?
3.MADE IN JAPAN , I THINK. F80 MADE IN THAILAND,I THINK.BUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT AS LONG AS IS ISO CERTIFIED.OTHERWISE F80 MAY COST 20% TO 30% MORE EXPENSIVE.
4.FAST AUTO FOCUS.BUT NOWADAY NEW AF SLR FOCUSING ARE ALL VERY FAST,ONE REALLY CANNOT NOTE THE DIFFERENT UNLESS COMPARE SIDE BY SIDE .
.........
BOTH ARE GREAT CAMERAS.GO AND FEEL BOTH IN YOUR HAND BEFORE YOU BUY.AFTER ALL PERSONAL LIKING PREVAIL.

Strength:

Loaded with great features. Great fill flash.

Weakness:

Top shutter speed of 1/4000 and top flash sync of 1/125.

What can I say. I sold my N90s and I don't regret it one bit. With this camera I get bracketing and flash compinsasion built in. N90s needed MF-26 for these features and they were not easy to set. The 5 focus points do not mean much to me but are a great feature. I love the grid lines, I leave them on most of the time. The N90s is still in the line up, but not for long. We all know that Nikon is just trying to sell off the remaining N90s's it has in stock. They should have done that before bringing the N80 out. This camera is going to make getting rid of there N90s stock pretty hard to do! The claims that the N80 is not built very well is not well founded. Unless you are a pro going mountain climbing or on sufari, this camera is built more than good enough. My N90s was built stronger and I don't miss it at all (and I thought I would never part with it!).

Customer Service

None needed for this camera. Only used service once for MF-26 back with great service.

Strength:

Loaded with many features. Small (almost too small). Custom functions/settings are nice. A bit plasticky but metal in the right places such as lens mount and film rails. Finally a depth of field preview button on an amatuer Nikon body!

Weakness:

Will not meter with manual focus lenses. No mirror lock up. Neither of these features are issues with me but some people may need them. I wish the accessory grip had a vertical shutter release like the MB10 for the N90s.

Great camera for the money. Perfect for somebody who does not have a lot of manual focus lenses and does not want to spend the $$ for an F100. Also great as a back up to F100/F5/N90s. Viewfinder grid lines cute and useful for keeping those horizons straight (this feature can be shut off). I bought the accessory hand grip which make the camera feel a bit better in my hands and also allows the use of AA batteries.

Customer Service

not needed at this time but my past experiences with Nikon in Torrance CA have been fairly positive.

Spot meter, metering system.

Weakness:

Cheap construction, terrible mirror slap, low light focusing, slow focusing, only 2.5
frames per second, no mirror lock

Save your money and try a Canon Elan7, or a Minolta 7, you get more features and better performance, plus better built quality.

An excellent camera for this price. Its small size and light weight suits my purpose to shoot travel/landscape photos v much.
With a similar price, the Eos30, though it isnt v heavy and bulky, is absolutely beat by F80 in this area.
Of cos both r great cameras but I personally prefer F80 cos of :
light weight,
small size,
