Strength:

-Very compact and light, fits easily in my waste pouch with the 22-55 lens.
- Simple to use and easy to learn for the beginner
- Midroll change was when you want to change to a faster film (no tripod and lovely evening shot scene)
- Contrary to someone's review, slide film IS AVAILABLE!

Weakness:

- I can't get 100 film in Finland!

It's a great camera to start with, and especially for the backpacking types very compact and tough. The cannisters are easy to handle while backpacking. I have taken a couple of shots of the Northern lights and the result were quite good. It was my second roll with the camera and I was surprised that I got anything at all. I've shot some great landscapes that have won some praise from friends. One day I would like to post them on the web (when I can get a scanner).
It has all the controls you need to learn photography and whet your creative spirit! Recommended!!!

Strength:

-- Solid build -- metal and polycarbonate body
-- Metal lens mount ring
-- Quick film loading (drop in)
-- Smallish body with very good feel overall
-- Can use all modern Canon AF lenses

Weakness:

Two problems, neither one of which is the Canon EOS IX's fault:

-- ISO 800 film is still very difficult to find, even thought it's been out for quite a while as of the date of this review (if you really, really need ISO 800 film, it IS available in the United States, but get ready to become a "professional film hunter")
-- if you live and die by taking SLIDES, then either DON'T get involved with the APS format or get ready to do a lot of business with European film shops and developers. APS slide film and developing IS available, but NOT in the United States as of yet.

The Canon EOS IX is a professional-quality offering that could be used by a professional or by a serious amateur who likes APS (yes, there are a few of us out here), but doesn't want to sacrifice all of the bells and whistles that go along with a fine 35mm camera. Unfortunately, the APS format has been maligned by the photographic community to such an extent that really, really outstanding cameras like the Canon EOS IX don't get the credit they deserve. This is a very well-made camera that is at least as good as anything Canon has ever offered in terms of quality and ability, and the APS format gives it the ability to SURPASS its 35mm brothers in several ways. One example is a longer reach with zooms and telephotos simply because of the 24mm format film, meaning that I can outperform a 35mm photographer using the same lens that I'm using! Contrary to popular belief, this smaller format DOES NOT result in grainy blow-ups with this system, because the Canon EOS IX wrings every bit of capability out of whatever ISO film you load into it, much the same way the Pentax 110 SLR (Remember this camera? If you do, then you're showing your age!) did with 110 film. I've had pictures enlarged to 12X18 without any problem. The lowest-level camera in the Canon 35mm line that can be compared to this little gem is the Canon Elan 7. Some of the EOS IX cameras even came with eye control capabilities in the viewfinder! By the way, I've used the EOS IX to take pictures of the Atlanta skyline at night. The pictures were sharp and crisp...at least as good as anything I've done with 35mm at night. One thing I really like to do is to take a few pictures that I've taken with my EOS IX and some others that I've taken with my Nikon 35mm camera, mix them up, and then challenge friends that think APS film is somehow inferior to 35mm to tell me which pix were taken with which cam. They simply cannot do it, and it frustrates them to no end!

Let me mention that I'm a diehard 35mm photographer, but I've just got to give credit where credit is due. I felt like I took a chance with this cam when I bought it, but I really have been very pleased with what I've gotten with this system. This is an example of APS "done right!"

Some of these outstanding cams are still available for purchase new. If you've been intrigued by the APS format but don't want to sacrifice upper-level 35mm capabilities, if you already own a modern, AF SLR camera in the Canon system and want a very nice APS camera that will use all of the lenses you already own, or if you just want a camera that you will be proud of and is just a very good looking, very well made and durable camera, too, then the Canon EOS IX is for you. It's destined to become a collector's item, too. Buy one before it's too late!

Strength:

Nice feel, nice look, nice weight. nice lense, sharp pictures, quiet & fast autofocus (24-85USM), allows manual override on focus, shutter, and aperture

Weakness:

Lack of APS film, maximum of 400 speed. It is more of a problem of APS than the camera.

Definitely worth the price considering the the lense by itself goes for $370. Bought the package for $499, which makes the body only $130!! Great price, sharp pictures (especially 200 speed for outdoor, and 400 speed for indoor)

Strength:

It is samll, light weight, very easy to use but full-featured. It takes great pictures, especially with Kodak 200 film.

Weakness:

None so far.

Even without all of the other great features, having fully interchangeable lenses between an APS camera and my EOS A2 makes this camera a sure winner.

Strength:

Eye control AF focus
Off center metering
The price to what I got compared with 35mm and have the same

Weakness:

Nope not a thing

APS is real compared with what you get from say a Pentax pz-1p. Could use more metering control not as good as that pz-1p. A lot camera for money. Film is high but not compared to slides. Film hopefully will get 25% cheaper. Try one instead of a EOS-3 The same lenses fit hope you know.

Customer Service

Took three phone calls to get USA manual then it didn't come from the company they said.

Strength:

I find the Canaon IX has well make body and good speed for normal use.

Weakness:

I had the Camera for 5 months and only took 4 rolls of film. The problem start when I using it with the ex380 flash for welding portrait. The whole computer system and shutter jam. I had to take it back to the dealer to replace the new body.

I hope the new body on the Canon IX will not give me more problems in future. Today most camera are all computer controls and care of handling is very important.
