Model Reviewed: T-2 Titanium

Strength:

Size and rounded shape, viewfinder and information displayed in viewfinder (especially if you compare it to the Leica Minilux!), image quality, several manual adjustments possible.

Weakness:

Shooting faster than 1/100s is only possible in program mode, f2.8 can only be used in program mode. These are the only drawbacks when comparing to the Minilux, plus the 2.8 vs. 2.4 largest aperture.

This tiny camera generally gives me better results than my low-end MF SLR (a Minolta X300s) with medium-end lenses. Easy to operate but it is still possible to adjust almost everything manually.

Customer Service

Bad. Camera back needed replacement and it took 2 months.

Model Reviewed: T-2 Titanium

Strength:

The images from this camera make me look like a better photographer than I am. The outdoor fill flash is nearly perfect every time, when I'm close enough to use it. I like how the T2 can be manually focussed with the aid of an electronic rangefinder (I believe an exclusive in its class.) This camera is incredibly durable and a sheer pleasure to use. There are no modes to cycle through, all of the controls are direct and quick to set. It is easy to get shots while in a hurry compared to the other models I tried because the control layout is so simple and straight-forward.

Weakness:

I wish it would focus closer than 0.7 meters, but if that is the price to pay for such a great lens, so be it. I have focussed a little closer with good results by setting f11 or f16. It's not hard to mentally compensate for parallax in this range since the viewfinder parallax marks are barely different from the normal infinity frame marks. Also there is no night flash mode with slow shutter speed. When the flash is on, the shutter speed is automatically set to 1/30 to 1/500 depending on the ambient light. Again a small price to pay for the superb fill flash. The T2 was rather expensive, around $600. I soon forgot about the pinch on my wallet because the thing is so enjoyable to use. The flash seems rather anemic but hasn't presented much of a problem except with slow slide film.

A portable camera that is nearly the equal of my slrs in its ability to put quality images on film, albeit with limited versatility. I've abused this camera by carrying it around in my pocket with no protective case, even though it comes with an excellent leather one, without any negative effect. I've stopped doing that even though I now know the titanium shell can take it. The extra 5 seconds to pull it out of its case hasn't caused any lost shots so far. If I ever trash or lose this camera, I wouldn't hesitate to replace it in kind.

Strength:

This is a small, well-built quality camera that is packed with features.

Weakness:

No problems.

This is a great little camera that will do a lot for you. I was extremely pleased with the quality of images from this camera. The flash is a bit weak, but really good for fill flash. This camera is solidly built and small enough to grab and take anywhere. It's a bit pricey, but I have never regretted spending the money, especially after considering everything else on the market that is similar. I considered the Leica Minilux, but heard this one was easier to use and the optics were comparable for all practical purposes.

Strength:

Great design. Good looking and practical.

Weakness:

Too much light fall-off in the corners. The lens is not too good at full aperture. 1/250 max shutter speed in Aperture mode.

This would be the ideal camera if the lens matched the rest of the package for quality. I see that others have reviewed the lens very highly. Maybe I am too picky but for this price I expect top quality results.

Strength:

The pictures that this camera takes continue to impress everybody that sees them. In most cases people always ask what kind of camera I used to take the pictures. The exposure system is great and it is virtually impossible to take a poorly exposed picture. Images have great sharpness and colour saturation. The finish on this camera is without equal and the titanium body is very scratch resistant. I also like the automatic lense cover.
The camera is small enough to take anywhere.

Weakness:

If you wear glasses you can't see all of the scene in the viewfinder. In some circumstances I have noted light falloff in the outer portions of some photographs but this does not happen too often. I really hate the time lag between pushing the shutter release and the taking of the picture. The camera doesn't focus the lense until you actually take the picture.

Highly recommended. I'll never sell this classic.

Strength:

Easy to use and good lens for a point and shoot. Leica minilux is far superior.

Weakness:

Camera developed short and got too hot to touch. Way too expensive for a defective product.

I'm fairly well acquainted with Contax quirks but I regret the thousands of dollars spent learning a system that apparently is defective.

Customer Service

I still don't know where the camera is after a month at the service center.

Strength:

Comfortable hold (for my hands anyway) thanks to the finger- & thumb-grips and the rounded edges. Comfortable size and weight too.
Flash won't switch on unless I tell it to.
User control - aperture, exposure compensation, manual focus overirde.
Excellent viewfinder.
Good lens.
Good looking.
Quiet operation (try compare it with the Minilux!).

Weakness:

Shutter speed only goes up to 1/250 except at aperture f2.8, but then it'll switch itself to programme mode.
Long shutter lag time.
Focus lock doesn't always work.

The T2 came out in 1990 as the first titanium bodied high-end AF point & shoot (if I remembered correctly). Lots of similar products appeared since then from various manufacturers, but none as good as the T2.

Strength:

Easy to use and beautifully designed.

Weakness:

Incapable of producing sharp photos. Despite a trip to Kyocera for repairs, peformance was still lackluster. My guess is that one or more lens elements was off. Sold camera and bought Nikon 35Ti

If you can find a good sample, this is a pleasant camera to use, with results that are reportedly superior.

Customer Service

Pleasant but failed to fix problem.

Strength:

Zeiss lens for great sharpness and colours that sing

User controllable focus & exposure

Flash stays switched off

Not too small or too light, I have successfully hand-held shots at 1/2 second

Weakness:

Shutter speed range could be wider (slower for night shots, faster for those times you're caught out on a bright day with fast film in the camera)

IR AF/rangefinder only, so focusing through glass is guesswork at distances closer than infinity

This is my favourite camera, for the simple reason I've taken 90% of my best pictures with it. Simple yet controllable, gives top quality results. Does exactly what it says on the titanium!

Customer Service
