Minox GT-E/S Point and Shoot

Minox GT-E/S Point and Shoot

DESCRIPTION

The GT-E and GT-S purposely show restraint when it comes to technical gadgets and concentrate on as much precision mechanics as possible. This gives the photographer more freedom for individual creative composition. Selecting the aperture, for example, enables you to creatively control the depth of field and exposure. Other amazing features of these light-weight and robust full-frame cameras are the very fast lens (f/2,8), the excellent imaging quality and the elegant design.

Strength:

I am using the GT-X model which is the same as the GT-S except for the body color. Have shot 2 rolls of film through it and was taken aback by the picture quality, tack sharp and excellent contrast! Leica quality photos in a very compact body. This camera have sufficient manual overide although I would prefer manual film speed settings to auto DX coding in the GT-X(S). Defintely outperform most compacts out there, even the Yashica T5 is not as sharp when compared to this camera (when you got the manual focus correct that is). I really enjoy using this camera, but its not a camera for everybody. Just remember all settings are not automatic; so if you have set, say, the 2x exposure switch, or timer, make sure to turn it back off or all the photos will follow the previous setting. Loading the film is also not as quick as todays P&S camera. Overall still an excellent camera which makes you think before you shoot.

Weakness:

Not at the moment, but be careful of the exposure in brightly lit areas, a lens hood is recommended or other tricks you might learn along the way. Also using a higher film speed may require a ND filter.

Excellent camera you will either hate it or love it. I love it.

Strength:

Just came back from a trip in Asia for about eight months. After some thinking decided to leave my SLR at home for this trip, and take this one along. Apart from a technical problem (lens aperture blades would'nt open further than f8)which was fixed in Malysia,it never let me down. The pictures are crystal sharp and well exposed. I'm still amazed at the quality of the lens.

Weakness:

Not very reliable, so I wouldn't recommend to buy a used one. However, customer service in Germany is very good, they checked my GT-E for free after my trip!
Apart from that: none!

This is a great pns-camera for the ones who wish to be 'in control'. If you know how to use this camera the results are stunning! I rate it 4 starts, if just it was more reliable.....

Customer Service

Very good, see above!

Strength:

Very compact.
Vert quiet shutter.
Capable of excellent quality results.

Weakness:

You have to guess the focus distance.
Aperture priority only.
Quite fiddley to focus/change aperture.
Changing the film not as quick and simple as more "modern" cameras.

This camera is a bit of a novelty really. I think people often have one who are after good results and do not want to log a SLR around. This is why I use mine.
Seems to slightly over expose with slide film. I could test this and compensate with the manual film speed setting. Still I use print film with it's wider exposure latitude.
These cameras are in demand in Great Britain. They are quite a collectors item second hand.

Strength:

Small, sharp lens, quiet, very reliable.

Weakness:

Film advance sometimes sticky.

I got this camera in 1987 and it still works great. It has been dropped, splashed with salt water, left in the closet for years, and always works great. The only problem I ever had is that the film advance is a bit sticky, but not bad after 14 years. Easily fits in your pocket, ultra quiet operation, great little camera. I have a Sunpack 1600 flash ($25) that works better than the Minox flash ($70) I once had for it.

Strength:

Very small and light, can be carried in pocket
Tough polycarbonate body
Not easily scratched
Manual control of film speed, aperture and focus
Very quiet shutter operation
Excellent lens at all apertures
Clear depth of view scale on lens barrel
Flash hot shoe for separate flashgun (no built-in flash)

Weakness:

Shutter reliability problems
Viewfinder distorts slightly
Shutter speed indicator difficult to see in viewfinder
CdS photocells over-sensitive to light from a bright sky
No rangefinder or other focus aids - have to be able to estimate distance
Max. shutter speed only 1/500 - best not to use a very fast film, to avoid over-exposure
Loading film is fiddly but comes with practice

A good camera with excellent optics. Ideal for serious/experienced photogs wanting a very small full-frame 35mm camera without too much automation. Not for beginners or those requiring convenience, because of the awkward film loading and the need to estimate distance.

Strength:

quite & compact.
no AF lag,NEVER.

Weakness:

after years the advancing mech part could begin losing frame

The film advancing part should be stronger.
And maybe the nearest focus could shorten to 35cm.
Otherwise it's perfect.

Strength:

silence, sharpness, size, battery durability, manual controls

Weakness:

slow for some snapshots, my minox flashes always failed.

For 20 years there's been a Minox 35 in my pocket. And if I ever stop carrying 2 SLRs, flashes and fast lenses in my trips; I'll surely have a Minox +tiny flash and tripod at hand. Or something as silent and small, able to produce images that good. A camera for those who like (and know how) to "make" rather than "take" photos.

Customer Service

never needed them, except for returning the flashes.
