Rollei Prego 90 Point and Shoot

Rollei Prego 90 Point and Shoot

DESCRIPTION

The Rollei Prego 90 gives you the best of both world's, optically speaking. Its Varioapogon 28-90mm lens zooms long enough for distortion-free head-and-shoulders portraits, yet is wide enough on the short end for tight interiors, big views and architectural subjects. What's more, its wide-angle capability means you can move in close to a subject and still show an interesting background.

Strength:

Superb Optics -- takes beautiful picture every time. Lot of features. A very useful zoom range 28 -- 90.

Weakness:

Needs quite a bit of practice to get used to all the buttons and functions. However, basic use of the camera needs familiarlity with only a few things.

When you buy a camera, look for 3 things -- optics, optics and optics. You cannot go wrong with this one.

Strength:

Len's/value for money/28-90 zoom/fully featuredwith a variety of modes, etc./quality of solid construction.

Weakness:

relative larger size and heavier weight than other compacts/poorly organized and somewhat hard to use guide manual/clumsy manipulation for exposure compensation/have to reset exposure compensation after each shot/have to poke object like ball point or paper clip to insert batteries. Still am curious exactly was "fuzzy" mode really does.

Was tired of lugging a heavy X700 Minolta and lenses/filters, etc. on trips. I had a pocket sized fixed lens Leica AF but was looking for more and found it in the Prego z90. In looking for a camera to meet my needs for lighter weight by full featured AF I came on this review site and read about this camera. Did my first test roll and the pictures came out wonderful. First shot was panorama mode and opened up this area for me (vistas, etc.). Camera handled outdoor contrast situations beautifully. This is a serious camera that is for more than just party snaps and is therefore larger and heavier than pocket sized and less feature supplied compact cameras. I use the exposure compensation often and most other compacts don't have this feature.

Strength:

I've had the Rolei Prego 70 before this model. As always, both cameras produced sharp, vivid images! very happy with it! one of the best cameras with the most features. takes a while to get used to it, but once you're set, you're SET! ofcourse, don't expect comparable results to an SLR if you're quite a distance from your subject!

Weakness:

eyepiece is abit too small. could have worked it better!
learning curve for features is slightly higher, but not impossible! if you're lazy, memorize a few important functions and you're good to go!

I love this camera! Its as good as dragging an SLR around, minus the weight! I'm lucky to have the VarioApogon lenses. SHARP! almost all images turn out how i want them to!

Strength:

The lens, the lens, the lens! I am picky as hell about optics, and this Schneider zoom is somewthing special. Every roll I shoot gives me more confidence that I can get images very close to those even with my Leica with this camera. Exposures are also very good, even inside the house with just the light coming in from the window. Flash is powerful for a P&S and recycles fast. More features than you even need.

Weakness:

Camera is a bit bulky for a point and shoot, but I think that helps me hold it still better at slower speeds. By the way, a few other posters were incorrect about not being able to use the camera when first turned on. You can shoot immediately even while its cycling itself. Has a slight corner fall off at 28mm, but not too bad for a P&S. Finder took some getting used to--the trick is to not put your eye right up, but to leave 1/2 inch space or so.

This is one of the few things I've bought in a long time that actually exceeded my expectations. Rollei has apparantly stopped making them, so grab one now if you want a superior zoom P&S camera.

Customer Service

Rollei is a tad weak here these days. Promised a strap that was missing and never send it.

Strength:

Extremely useful zoom range for my kind of photography. (I'm a newspaper shooter. The Rollei is my "sidearm," having given me many front page photos that were indistinguishable in quality from shots taken on my Canon SLRs.)
Razor sharp optics, esp. at the 28mm setting, very accurate focusing, exposure compensation capability, a powerful flash (which gives great fill-flash shots), and relatively rugged construction for a P&S camera. Prego's size is not a drawback for me, since a single Rollei substitutes quite handily for my SLRs in many situations: travel, parties, hiking, street photography. In some ways, it's almost like having my Leica M-4, with 28mm and 50mm lenses always handy. Now discontinued, it's currently available at a great price.

Weakness:

Somewhat squinty viewfinder, less than fully ergonomic control buttons, and exposure compensation has to be re-set for each shot.

Best point and shoot I've ever owned, despite some design weaknesses. BTW, the "slow warm up time" cited by other reviewers is NOT a problem: Simply press the "on" button to activate camera, then press down lightly on shutter release to immediately end the start up cycle. Prego strengths: a) optics and focus accuracy are superior to those of the similarly-featured Pentax 928. b) "macro" closeup capability a nice plus. c) "snap" setting, which sets the focus at hyperfocal distance, is simply terrific for daytime "street" photography at the 28mm zoom setting. d) heftier, more rugged construction than most P&S cameras. But the principal reasons for owning the Prego 90 are the superb optics and the camera's high degree of exposure and focus accuracy.

Strength:

1. Remote control feature.
2. Nice microscope and bulb feature.
3. Inceredibly sharp center focus area.
4. Amazingly good color rendation.

Weakness:

1. Bulky shape and feeling.
2, Not good eyepiece design.
3. Poor contrast corner area.

1. I purchased Olympus Stylus 80. It is quite sharp but its color rendation is not good as I expect. This camera with HFT coated lens and
very sharp vario apogon lens gave me always
impressive images. I always impressed by its photos. It is very sharp and contrasty lens and flash is powerful than other PS camera's.

Strength:

Relatively fast wide angle zoom lens. Very sharp Schneider optics. German engineering. Good looks.

Weakness:

Chunky, sometimes obtrusive. Too many doo-dads often slow down the picture taking process.

This somewhat underrated camera is great for street scenes, group shots, portraits and even interior shots. I'm very happy with those capabilities in a point and shoot camera. Too bad Rollei has recently discontinued it.

Customer Service

Camera hasn't needed any repairs. I have found the Rollei people to be very helpful in the past, however.

Strength:

* The lense! Razor sharp.
* Nice 28 MM feature comes in handy.
* Pretty fast even at large focal lengths.
* Flash is very adequate for a P&S.

Weakness:

* Not a very compact camera.
* Loss of contrast in corners when using 28 mm zoom.
* Flash is a bit too bright for indoor short distance pics.
* The viewfinder takes a little getting used to.
* Tripod mount is a tad off-center, so setting it up on my mini-tripod I carry whilst on trips can be a bit tricky.

This P&S produces pictures that leave many SLR results behind. Very sharp Schneider Kreuznach lense with an adequate zoom area. Let's dace it, no one needs more than 90 mm, unless you're going to spot lions in the Serengeti. In which case, bring an SLR. The 28 mm option is great for getting scenery pictures as well as group pictures indoors without Aunt Nelly being cut off.
All the various options (portrait, panorama, etc.) all work as expected. Battery usage is surprisingly low. The flash is a tad bright for indoor pictures, but offers the outdoors help one would expect from a separate flash unit.
All in all, the camera does have some slight drawbacks, but they're MORE than offset by its assets: mainly the fantastic lense, resulting in better pictures than you've ever seen from a P&S in this zoom range. Highly recommended!

Strength:

1) The lens is sharp enough to produce extremely good 8x12" (A4) prints.

2) Wide angle lens!

3) Good flash coverage for indoor shots.

4) Exposure compensation is very useful, esp. for the backlight situations.

Weakness:

1) Field curvature. The lens produces extremely sharp images (center) but corners and edges are a bit blury if the subject is mostly flat. E.g.: if you're photographing a building exterior you will notice how the image is soft in the corners and edges. You will notice this even in small prints (4x6"). However, if you're taking a picture of a 3D scene this will not be a big problem.

2) Vignetting at 28mm is pretty bad. You will notice darker corners even in 4x6" prints.

3) Fill-flash is a bit too powerful. People's faces are a bit washed out.

4) The camera did not operate in below freezing temps. I know, the specs say that it will work down to 14F (-10C) but in reality it didn't. I was using brand new batteries and I was carrying the camera underneath my ski clothes. Outside temp was probably 20F (-6C). The shutter refused to work.

5) Bulb setting is nice but kinda useless because you have to keep your finger on the shutter to keep it open.

The 28mm lens and the excellent sharpness are really hard to find in other p&s cameras, esp. at this price. The camera and its lens are not perfect though and the software features ("fuzzy" mode for instance!) are just marketing crap. Overall I think it's a camera for a niche market: people who know a bit about photography and can appreciate things such as wide lens coverage, lens sharpness, and exposure compensation. If you find yourself in this category and are not willing to spend a fortune for a high-end p&s (Leica, Contax and such) go for it. Just remember that this isn't a SLR and it will never beat one (in the hands of a knowledgeable user).

For a zoom, this is one outstanding camera.
BUT, its lens cannont beat the T4's.
Although I must say this is unfair as the t4 is a fixed lens.

But once you have seen the images of a Zeiss lens, i dun think any other lens will do, not even Schinerder kruzenagh?

I like t4 for its sheer brilliant razor sharp optics. The images POPS out onto u!

I like prego's good colour rendition and 28mm range.

I will have to second rate its sharpness...;(
