Strength:

I personnel like the software program that came with the TAMARACK
scanner. It is not a complicate system and has all features that I have needed.

Weakness:

It is a slower system and only handles 4 slides or 6 film strips

I purchased this scanner at least six or seven years ago and have use it
extensively. I purchased one of the new HP flat bed scanner that can
handle up to 16 slides at a time. The only problem is it will produce from 8 to
10 slides and will not process the rest. I take the unprocessed and put them
thru the TAMARACK with no problem. I talked to HP about this and they had
no help as to why there scanner was'nt doing all the slides. My only difficulty
with the TAMARACK scanner is I can only use it on my WINDOWS 98SE
computer. I need a software update for WINDOWS XP.

Customer Service

When I purchased the unit everything worked. I had no reason to contact
customer service.

Strength:

The results that I have gotten are very good. You can see them on my site at http://bobp31.homestead.com/index.html all the photo by Bud Coons, Mel Pope and myself were scanned using the ArtiScan 2400fs. Except for some of the BW photos which were scanned on a flatbed scanner.

I had some trouble with the unit when I wnent to Windows XP but found that if I removed my flatbed scanner and the support program for it and loaded Doucman 3.00 by itself that it worked fine. The main trouble is you have to do it all over again if you reinstall the flatbed scanner. Anyone needing a copy of Documan 3.00 I will gladly burn one for you. You can contact me at bobp31@juno.com

This scanner worked great and at a good price. But DO NOT got one. They no longer support it. No drivers for it, so unless you use WIN95 it's useless.

Strength:

Cheap

Weakness:

OOB (out of business), crappy software, no support, need 3.0 Documan software badly.

I''m a part-time outdoor writer for several saltwatwer fishing magazines and use pictures of my fishing to illustrate my articles. I thought a film scanner would save me money and time in article prep. I bought the Tamarack 2400 from Outpost.com back in November 2000 but because of a surgery rehab and other commitments, never got around to hooking up my scanner. I encountered problems right from the start. I found this very helpful site and tried following all the advice within these reviews but no luck. It still won''t work (software). Does anyone have a copy of Documan 3.0 they''d be willing to burn a copy of and send to me? I''d compensate your for time & materials. All I have is the 2.3 version and even after downloading all the patches, it doesn''t work. Any suggestions, help or Documan 3.0 would be most appreciated. Thanks, Mark Sagerholm email: fishmsag@hotmail.com

Strength:

Batch processing that can be left unattended.
very fast when used with the USB cable. There is a filter section that can be played with to make a negative that is not the greatest come out exceptable. The image can be cropped during preview mode.

Weakness:

Very slow if used with LPT cable, however this could be a plus if moved to a temporary computer Win 95. Like to see an adapter offered for APS film.

Keeping in mind that this is a lower end Scanner I feel it has a great potential. I have found that using the scanner with Paint Shop Pro I get the best results if I add "noise" Median cut it gives me a good image that prints as good or better than the ones printed from the developer. The image scanned at 2400DPI gives a file size of approx. 18.6meg.
Bottom line: Would I recommend this scanner? You bet!!!

Customer Service

Outstanding***. I ordered using a money order on Tues. The Scanner arrived on Thursday.

Strength:

Cheap. Takes good scans. Batch processing is very convenient. Great results.

Weakness:

Software is a little flakey on install. Documentation is minimal.

Excellent USB film scanner. The results are better then the $1600 Epson flatbed with transparency unit that I have. Price is unbelievable compared to similar products on the market. The scanning software that comes with it is much nicer then the Epson TWAIN drivers that I dealt with in the past. It comes with Adobe Photodeluxe as well, for those who don't have decent editing software like Photoshop or PaintShop Pro.

Strength:

Good price, batch processing.

Weakness:

Besides the obvious problems with parallel port scanners, my main gripe is the flaky software. The installation failed due to a file missing error. Although the software worked despite the error, you have to wonder if it affected the performance, which in my case, sucked. Every scan resulted in blue-channel noise running length-wise across the center one-third of the picture, which could occasionally be Photoshop'd, but most of the time it wasn't worth it. If not for that, I would have kept it. The sharpness of the other two-thirds of the picture was acceptable. Software updates from their website are a joke. One is a DLL file that didn't need to be replaced (same version as what the CD had), and the other was an .exe that wouldn't run because of some directory error. Save your money and buy a real film scanner.

Forget about it.

Customer Service

Didn't bother. After reading the crappy manual, visiting their pathetic website for their unusable patches, I knew better than to keep this one. Good thing Fry's has a 30-day return policy.

Strength:

Cheap, simple to use.
In Europe, it is known as the Jenscan21, and the scanner is made by Jenoptik. The software is by Tamarack and is easy to use, reasonably fast, though high-res scans can take time. Colour rendering good. Sharpness impressive.

Weakness:

Slight software installation problem, but soon overcome! The pc kept forgetting that the scanner was attached to a USB adapter!

A very nice and rare piece of kit! Compact and needing little desk-space. Good to have a film and slide scanner that is not an expensive "add-on" to an existing (usually flat-bed) paper scanner. Results at twice the optical resolution of 2400 (4800) very fine.Images sharp, and colour accurate enough for my liking. Software also flexible and friendly. Low-res scans very fast. Am pleased to have bought it, even though the site of the shop was unusual!

Customer Service

Not known for the Jenscan.
(The Logitech scanner was replaced free with a later model when the colour sensors went on the blink.)

Strength:

Good scans at so cheap a price.

Weakness:

Takes so long to scan a frame, nearly 3 minutes even with USB interface at 2400dpi. Faster at lower dpi, but produces ugly scans. There's also some image distortion on both ends of the frame that you have to crop.

Produces ugly scans IF you use only the driver that came with the scanner. At first, color shifts were beyond correction that even PhotoShop experts I knew couldn't get acceptable color balance with my sample scans. At that time, I thought I didn't get my money's worth, especially with the devalued currency we have here in the Philippines. But after downloading 2400FS.DLL and USB2400.DLL (if you're using the USB connector) from http://www.tamarack.net/support.html, the scans just turned out perfect, no need for color correction at all. But the driver patch doubled scanning time (from about 80sec at 2400dpi to about 160sec). My scans are much, much better than those made with the much more expensive MicroTek ScanMaker a friend was using. Yes, I'd recommend this product to other photographers on a budget, especially those from Third World countries like mine. But may not good if you do lots of scans for a big organization because of the slow scanning speed.

Customer Service

Got email replies from tech support, but didn't quite solve my earlier problem with the scanner. I managed to find a solution for myself.
