Strength:
Cheap -- but you get what you pay for
Weakness:
Lots of garbage in scans (lines, noise). Terrible color rendition - I couldn't make colors come anywhere close to machine prints of the same negatives. Never read the same frame twice. The machine started jamming after a dozen or so scans. I've given up on this one. Chalk the $175 up to experience. I doubt it would ever be usable. If there was a rating option lower than one thumbs up, that's what the Tamarack would get from me! I came to this site to try to make an educated buy next time! Customer Service After e-mailing back and forth several times, shipped the scanner back and it was replaced with another that had most of the problems of the first unit and then stopped reading all colors but one after a few scans. Strength:
small footprint
Weakness:
drivers did not woek with windows 2000 The scanner did not work with Windows 2000 professional. It might work with the next vesion of windows XP as that is supposed to give the user options to run applications under any win9x. Customer Service could not find win2000 drivers on website Similar Products Used: flatbed scanners |

Strength:
Worked for a while.
Weakness:
Worked for a while. If someone offers you a Tamarack 2400FS slide scanner, stay away. After upgrading my motherboard and it not working any longer then obtaining a new USB adaptor cable as a solution by Tamarack USA, it is good only as a paperweight. Cheap scanner, expensive paperweight. Customer Service Up against it with this one. Similar Products Used: Umax |

Strength:
Inexpensive
Weakness:
Everything except price This scanner has much better resolution than a flatbed with an adapter. However, it has poor colour accuracy, bad software, it is very noisy, and has banding artifacts. The HP Photosmart is definitly worth the extra money. Similar Products Used: HP Photosmart |

Strength:
Cheap, other than that none.
Weakness:
Cheap, you get what you pay for. Frustrating! pure color streaks on scans. Have to keep rescanning to get one without streaks. Was hard to install, a lot of playing around, patches etc. Resolutiion of scans is no way 1200dpi looking. Gave this 1 thumbs up because it was the only choice. Do not buy!!!! Customer Service OK, they try, but have no solutions for streaks on scans. Similar Products Used: Epson 1200u with transparency unit. Lots better and it's a flatbed scanner. |

Very flakey TWAIN software This is sold by Jenoptik in the UK as JS21, with USB adapter included. First year was wasted with poor quality scans, impossible to get good color balance, software crashing at anything above 2400dpi. Then I upgraded my PC to Windowns ME - and the scanner stopped working completely. Just before trashing the whole thing I emailed Jenoptik about the ME problem and they send me (free) a CD with Documan 3. Scans are now superb, certainly much better than on Epson flatbed. Documan 3 comes with filters for ISO 100,200,400 which are very effective in achieving right contrast and color balance. Still some unexplained freezes, but I think this is as much Windows as the scanner. I will now certainly keep the JS21! Customer Service Jenoptik UK very good email response Similar Products Used: Epson GT7000 with film adapter |
