Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens 35mm Primes

Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

The EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM employs Canon's famous rear-focus telephoto optical design that delivers outstanding picture quality throughout its entire focusing range. Like its high-end siblings, this lens also uses two ultra-low dispersion glass elements to ensure maximum image sharpness and accurate color fidelity. Canon's advanced ultrasonic focusing motor & rear focusing design give silent, high speed autofocusing. It is perfectly suited for Canon's EOS system cameras, placing special emphasis on manual focusing capabilities.

Strength:

Fast, excellent optics, light weight, razor sharp even wide open, lighter alternative to 300mm and 400mm lenses by using tele-converters

Weakness:

I have the Mk.1, so:
Lack of tripod-mount and the lens-shade is too loose.

I bought my 200/2.8L USM as second-hand at 1/3 of MSRP. All that was "wrong" with it was quite a lot of wear on the outside of the barrel. After running a few rolls of slide-film throug it I can guarantee that this lens is awesome. It's the second L in my backpack, and I'm NOT trading it. EVER! (Unless I get a brand spanking new one.)

If you put the 1.4x or 2x Canon TCs on, you get either a 280/4 (~300/4) or a 400/5.6 wich is ALLMOST as good as having either of those lenses in your backpack (but you lose some contrast and sharpness).

You can find some of the older L-lenses as second hand at reasonable prices. Start collecting L's! You won't regret it!

Strength:

Sharp, great contrast and color balance. Compact, internal focus.

Weakness:

None.

Great compact telephoto. Probably less than half the size of the 70-200 2.8L, and although people will be impressed, they won't be frightened by its size. Sharper at 2.8 than the 70-200L. Color balance and contrast are just as good, if not better. Bought mine used with the tripod collar, which I found very helpful. The lens is not so heavy that I would worry about not using the collar, though. I have the Mark II version, which according to photodo.com, is slightly sharper than the Mark I. The removable larger hood makes it worthwhile over the Mark I, at any rate.

Strength:

The canon 200mm 2.8 lens is very sharp, lightweight and rugged. I´ve dropped it several times onto concrete floors, and the only thing that happened was that the lens hood got nicked.

Weakness:

Yes, my usm-motor collapsed (maybe from dropping the lens one time too many?). Fortunately, my employer payed the 400 bucks it cost to fix it. The autofocus sometimes seems to have trouble finding focus, but I don´t know why.

A sharp and rugged lens, wich sometimes won´t find focus as it should. when it does it does its very silent, though.

Strength:

I trade my TOKINA 840 ATX 80 - 400 f/4.5-5.6
with this lens. I love this lens. Picture quality is excellent.

Weakness:

None so far !

This lens takes excellent quality pictures. Even with a doubler (2x) there is no visible degradation picture quality. My X TOKINA 840 80 -400mm f4.5-5.6 does not even come close even when I used it with my doubler. It is light only 26 ounces. I took excellent pictures without
a tripod. This is a Canon L lens with a good price. I used for sports and wildlives. If you buy this lens you might as well buy the Canon 2x APO extender so you have a light and sharp lens 400mm. The thing I don't like (minor) is the color of the extender, white and the lens is black. I gave it a 10 stars....
