Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 35mm Primes

Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

A standard wide-angle lens featuring compact size and light weight. This lens is suitable for casual snap shot, landscape and architectural photography. The small number of elements ensures sharp, high-contrast image quality and super-fast AF. Distortion is virtually nonexistent, making the lens ideal for architectural photography and scenes containing straight lines. Mechanical manual focusing.

Strength:

Optical quality, cheap.

Weakness:

Bit flimsy build, narrow MF ring, not USM, ideally would be faster.

This lens is a star. It doesn''''t suffer from distortion or any obvious optical fault - well mine doesn''''t, I suppose there could be substandard ones. It''''s light, optically excellent and cheap. Any (consumer) zoom user who tries one of these will be surprised at the increase in quality. No, it''''s not an L lens, and I wouldn''''t claim it''''s that good - well, not as good as an L prime, certainly - but more than good enough for most people. It seems very old-fashioned now if I go out with 28, 50 and 135mm lenses instead of a zoom or two, but it''''s good for image quality and makes your photography improve

Strength:

very sharp cheap

Weakness:

at large apertures: chromatic aberrations pincusion distortion

This lens is a good bargain, but that doesn''t make it a good lense. I''ve used it for a few months now. Absolutely disapointing at wide open (yes, I use it at f/2.8) where there is very noticable chromatic aberration and pincushion distortion. It might have a sweet spot at f/8 where it is very sharp, but that is not what I bought it for.

Strength:

Small, Very sharp, fast, good color contrast. Very little pin-cushion or barrel distortion even at wide-open aperture.

Weakness:

a bit noisy AF, but in fact it's not a problem for me.

It's a very good lens with a very reasonable price tag (~$200). I truly recommend this lens for landscape.

Weakness:

No USM version

A very plain 28mm lens, I wish I'd gotten a wider 20, or 24mm lens. But besides that, for the price, it can't be beat. Shots with this lens are tack sharp, and easily blown up to over 8x10.

Model Reviewed: EF 28mm f/2.8

Strength:

One of the best EF lens Canon ever produced (and still in production). Extremely sharp even at wide open with undetectable distortion. Simple 5-element design with a large glass aspheric makes this lens flare-free and high contrast. Almost an "L" lens. Light and small. Non-rotating front element and common 52mm thread are ideal for filters. Inexpensive, excellent value!

Weakness:

One of the first generation EF lens remained in the line up, the arc form AF drive is noisy. MF is not as smooth as newer lenses with FTM. Cheap "Canon style" 5-blade diaphram gives poor background blur when shooting close-ups.

An optically superb general purpose wide angle lens. Excellent value. Unless you need silent AF with full-time-manual focus (FTM) and lens speed faster than 2.8, the EF 28mm 2.8 is a must buy.

Customer Service

No problem since the first day of purchase.

Really a nice lens, optically very sharp. Good color rendition, excellent contrast. Must have and so much better than the all in one type zoomers.

Strength:

Sharp, light weight

Weakness:

For what it is, none.

I bought this because it was cheap, and because I wanted a prime wide angle lens to go along with my 50 and 100mm prime lenses. I bought it in "bargain" condition from KEH. It is a bit scuffed up, but the glass is clean and it works fine. The lens itself produces better images than a zoom used at 28mm, and the photos are sharp even at f2.8 and the colors are nicely saturated. You have to be careful about flare, as is usually the case with a wide angle lens. The lack of a USM motor is a non-issue for me. A good value in the Canon line up of prime lenses.
