Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II 35mm Primes

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

This is the lightest EF lens of all at a mere 130g. Compact and high-performance, standard lens. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens.

Strength:

Price Sharp from F1.8 to F22 Price Fast AF(not very quiet) Price Very lite Price

Weakness:

Mostly plastic Not a USM

I bought this lens to replace my Canon 50mm F1.4 after I droped it in a duck pond at the zoo. When I first got the 50mm F1.8 I was quickly turned off buy it. This lens has a plastic lens mount and body. The 50mm F1.8 became my favorite once I go my first roll of film developed. It is AS SHARP as the F1.4!!! And best of all it cost $300 less.

Strength:

Extremely sharp, and extremely fast. Low price make this lens affordable to anyone with an EOS camera.

Weakness:

Lower quality build (though not optically). mount is a plastic bayonet style mount, not metal like it's predecessor's. does not have a distace scale.

Best value Canon lens! Don't let the low price fool you, this lens takes pictures that put my medium format seagull to shame. Cranked up at full height (about 32" with a 50mm lens), I can still just barely make out all of the details on my enlarger. I understand that the make quality is much less than the first version of this lens, but the optics are exactly the same, and the motor is faster than the original.

Weakness:

Noisy Cheap Build Difficult manual focus ring.

Sharp, Fast and Great Contrast! Cheap build = Low Price. At this price, I cannot complain about the build quality. And the photos that this lens produces are top quality. The 1.4 version of this lens has quite a bit of barrel distortion that this lens does not seem to produce. If you can find the 50 1.8 mkI (metal mount) get it! Focus ring really is a pain.

Weakness:

Build of course. So what, just buy another! :)

This year I went from FD to EF and this was the second lens I bought - and I'm thrilled with it. I recently worked it through a natural light workshop and it excelled, my prints at 20/f1.8 are beautiful quality.

Strength:

Price, excellent photos... you can't get this much quality using L zoom lense even though they are 10 times more expensive than this lens.

Weakness:

Focusing is a bit slow which I can live with, build quality is not an issue for the price.

Can't believe it takes such a good photo. The price is just below $100 or even cheaper on the net. Don't waste your money for used 50mm mk1 for metal mount and distance scale. It costs about $150 for used mk1, this plastic mount mkII works for your need, and shows excellent result. Just buy another one if it breaks. A must lens for everyone!!!

Strength:

-f/1.8!!! -Cost -Portability

Weakness:

-Build quality could be better (but probably not at this price) - after less than a year of moderate use I had quite a collection of dust particles on the inner elements. Nothing's visible on the prints so far, however, so I can't complain (yet). -AF seems to hunt a lot in low light situations; other (slower) lenses don't have as much difficulty.

Without scoring on the used market, you cannot beat this lense for the money. Its f/1.8 aperature, its size and weight, and its cost make for a very flexible lense that you don't need to think twice about bringing with you. This was my first EF lense and I can't recommend it enough for beginners. That being said, keep your eyes peeled for an f/1.4. You'll probably want to upgrade to one sooner or later - I know I do!

Customer Service

It'd probably cost almost as much to have this lense serviced as it would to just buy a new one.

Fast f/1.8 apeture lightweight world class pin sharp optics $180 aussie dollars. How cheap is that Its a Canon, that says it all.

Weakness:

none whatsoever

This is one oustanding lens. Well done to the guys at Canon. I have put about 10 rolls of film past this lens and to date have had excellent results. It just puts another nail in the coffin that canon has the best optics available even in their lower cost models. The sharpest shots have been at f/8-11 which is generally where most lenses are their sharpest. I would recomend this lens to anyone as it is also suited to low light handheld photography work. Top job
