Noisy motor. I bought this lens after reading this review, and i can tell you: it is worth a try!! Cheap, very sharp, lightweight, fast AF (i know it is not an USM, but for me it is working fine), but its motor is a bit noisy; really, as others reviews, a must try!! Customer Service Never needed. Strength:
Cheap , Sharp, and Light.
Weakness:
Focus ring. No scale. I have used this lens for years and love the quality photos it produces. I have read many reviews of this lens and the bad portions always seem to revolve around the cheap feel. I have droped this lens, kicked it across the room and broke the UV and no problem, used it in rain and snow and it still works fine. I think the people who whine about the build and appreance whine about everying or they are nikon users just being haters. For the people who say this lens isnt sharp.... Give me a break, try to steady your hands next time you use it. Customer Service none used Similar Products Used: Sigma 20 mm 1.8, Canon 24 mm 2.8 ,Canon 28 MM 2.8, Canon 50 mm 2.5 macro. This is a great, cheap, tack sharp, fast lens. It feels a bit cheap, yes, and there is no denying that. But I continue to be blown away by the results, and there is no denying that either. I have used it for many years with great results. This month took I tool a spur of the moment, handheld, wide open, 1/90 shutter speed picture of some glasses in a tasting room of a winery while on assignment and was once again blown away at the results you can achieve from a lens so incredibly cheap. I showed the photo to over 20 people to make sure it was not just my personal bias, and everyone has loved it so far. Do yourself a favor, ignore the one or two snobbish reviews below and buy this lens if you would rather not shell out for the more expensive Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM. By the way – it seems Canon has discontinued the f/1.0 L. If you take calculated, planned out shots where having a better manual focusing ring is helpful, or that one extra stop is crucial to you, then get the 50mm f/1.4. If build quality is crucial to you get the f/1.4. Or if $200 - $300 won’t cut into your film and processing budget, get the f/1.4. If you want a depth of field chart, the one on the f/1.4 is not that attractive – it only has markings at f/22. Otherwise, your money is much better spent on actually buying film, taking pictures, and getting them developed at a decent lab because this lens will take great pictures that are pretty much on par with the more expensive f/1.4, except under the harshest scrutiny – and at that point are you admiring the photograph or just looking really hard for something to complain about? Take your best shot out of at least 5 -10 rolls you shoot with this lens and blow it up to 8 x 10 or larger and then admire your skills. And then thank that wonderful and cheap little lens. (Note – on an 8 x 10 you will lose part of your photo; the size of the 35 mm negative is 24 x 36 mm… if you blow it up to 20 x 30 you will get the whole image…) To this day when I pick up the lens, I can’t help but feel disappointed at its cheap “feel.” The lens has accumulated a little dust inside because of its generally cheap construction, but it has not become bad enough to affect the results. And you know what, screw the whole cheap feel thing anyway. When I start to question this lens (even though this lens has proven itself time after time) – then at that point photography becomes secondary, doubt about this great, cheap little lens takes over, and I am no longer giving my full attention to the task at hand, which should be capturing a great photograph. So forget all the technical details and comparisons and just go take a good picture – this lens is up to the job, but only if you are. |

Strength:
Cheap. Light.
Weakness:
Light. Difficult to focus. Poor sharpness. Lens cap difficult to put on and take off. This lens is really annoying. It is all plastic, of cheap construction, breaks easily. To the outside it seems more like a toy. The focusing ring is another chapter. To focus from one meter to infinity you have to turn the focusing ring some four millimeters. It is practically impossible to focus manually. There is no distance scale either. Sharpness is not very good. It produces blurred pictures, comparable to a consumer zoom. Extemely Sharp at this price Fast AF in non-USM range Good value for money Light and small Perform wonders in low light Is the cheapest primes u can get and definitely better in optic even compared to those mid range zoom lenses(non-L of course)
Weakness:
Some said it is becoz of the plastic build and recommend to buy MKI 2nd hand if possible, but i dun find it a weak build. It is plastic but hey! It is still nice. Well well, u have read thru other's reviews on this lens. I bought it after reading the reviews to try primes and am never dissapointed. Optic quality is excellent and i am blown off directly when i received my processed shots.(of course->primes) Mid-range Zoom lenses couldnt compare with primes optically, that is definite. Autofocus is not that swift and a bit noisy compared to USM?(but of course, it is unfair for me to compare it to USM lens, USM for 1.4 also means few times the price)but it is of no concern to me as i prefer to take my time and manual focus. Good lens for low-lighting and excellent for such occasion. You will value the 1.8 wide aperture if u had been shooting at any indoor shots without flash like i did. Overall, you ought to buy this, nice and cheap(if u have lots of $$$, go for 1.4 instead but i think this will be an overkill for me though) Good Buy! And if u are using zoom lenses all the while and always bugging about the sharpness of the pictures, why not try this prime? At such cheap and under-valued price, you won't be wrong. Weakness:
Yep, it's that focus ring DOF Markings Canon ??? Whining AF Motor, not USM :-( Build quality unacceptable Got this lens as a trade-in for the Canon 75-300 which was for me sub-standard optically. What a difference! The sharpness of this lens is amazing when stopped down to f/4 and beyond. Manages to resolve remarkable level of detail compared to consumer zooms I have previously used. Customer Service Canon horrendous in Scotland at the moment.Q Similar Products Used: canon 75-300 USM Canon 28-90 USM (UTTER CRAP) Sigma 28-135 IF Macro (reasonable) |

none yet I bought this lens after reading the reviews as I needed something sharper than the 20-80mm lens that came with my EOS 300 body. I have never been disappointed yet with any shots taken with this lens. Friends and family are so impressed with the sharpness and contrast of my photos. Cheap and extremely sharp lens! A must have.
