Strength:
f/1.8 Great images Low price
Weakness:
Not USM, but what do you expect for $70? Auto focus works fine. You can't really go wrong here. Fast lens, good image quality and cheap price. It isn't made super strong, no. But unless you are going to be throwing your camera stuff around like a professional, then it doesn't really matter. You can still find the metal mount versions used, but they typically sell for well over $100. Buy this bad boy. Wonderful pics at all stops (its not the lens or the camera its YOU) I would buy this several times over A++++++ CANON
Weakness:
WELL ok it does look like a toy but arent we all children in some way Awesome lens gets a bad rap for being plastic well its a camera lens not a baseball (although I could chuck it 60 yards easy) treat it like a lens and won't have any troubles great for around the house gatherings and I ever put dumb wide angle adaptors and 2X converters because I am a gadget dork and am never satisfied but I will admit the glass is as good as a 300 dollar 1.4 The extra stop well do you really need 1.4 where 1.8 won't work probably not I would recommend this for any student or someone who isn't rich I have 5 children (subjects) so for canon to make a cheap (only in price not at all in performance) lens this is great Similar Products Used: 1.4 |

Strength:
This lens is pin sharp and reproduces colour perfectly. Very cheap price (I thought it would be a dud lens for this price) and is very light weight.
Weakness:
None Brilliant lens, one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used. It now stays permanently on my EOS 10D. Customer Service None so far. Similar Products Used: Canon 24-85mm USM, Canon 35-70mm and Sigma 50mm f2.8 EX macro. |

Price Neutral colour balance Good definition Light weight
Weakness:
Very soft at f1.8 Awkward position of manual focus ring Poor auto focus mechanism Overall poor build quality (but at this price I didn't expect much) I bought this lens to use in low light without flash or tripod. Only problem being that my shots were too soft to be of much use! Prior to purchase I was aware that lenses have a performance curve throughout the aparture range, but this model takes a long time to get going. It's of little use to me below f2.8 and it's not until f4 when it becomes close to it's best (f11). Having subsequently read up on other makes of fast 50mm lenses, this problems seems to be the case with them all - bar one or two extremely expensive models. However, due to it's price, I've hung onto it, and it's weight has been a real advantage when sight seeing. During initial lens tests I found this model had a more neutral colour balance when compared to my EOS 28-105mm (f3.5 - 4.5). The 28-105 warmed up the colours a little, usually with a pleasing effect. The 50mm stayed closer to real life, possibly giving shots a slightly cool look, but I'd have to do furthur tests to be sure. I also compared the definition between the two lenses with 5" x 71/2" prints from 100 ASA film. f5.6 upwards, there was really very little to choose between them, even with an eye glass. Overall, I'd say that the 50mm was slightly better, but there really wasn't much in it. Reading other reviews of this lens, I can only assume that either my 28-105 is better than most other peoples lenses, or they're all making very large prints where the difference is more apparent. general sharpeness !
Weakness:
color sharpeness, much worse flare than 1.4, strange out of focus highlights. This lens is not as good as the 1.4. It has earlier problems with flare and the colors are cooler (no problem) and also unsharper (the color response is not so sharp). Highlights out of focus have 5 edges/corners, with the 1.4 lens these are circles what looks better and more real. For the 1.8 the corners are said to be dark but you won´t see this with a 1,6 digicam like the 300D which I use or 10D. Sounds bad ? No, mostly you see no difference and it´s better than very most lenses, even many primes. Customer Service never used Similar Products Used: 50 1.4 |

Sharp, Sharp, Sharp. Cheap, Cheap, Cheap.
Weakness:
A bit noisy but I am OK with it I personally own a SONY P-32, Minolta F-200 and Canon Digital Rebel (300D) with a 18-55 EF-S Lens. Compare with all the above DCs and lens, this lens produces sharp image. Good blur background even the object is a person. (not flower :) ) Similar Products Used: Mentioned above. |

Weakness:
nothing I know this is going to sound redundant, but this lens is really sharp and the colors awesome. What mor can I say? Buy this lens, it is a great deal for the price. Blows away my 28-90 zoom. And yes, it does have that platic feel to it. I look at it this way, it's less weight in my camera bag. Customer Service never needed Similar Products Used: all kinds of 50mm lens |

Fast Bright and sharp Lightweight
Weakness:
A bit noisy The AF/MF button is hard to switch Very nice lens. I have used in on Canon EOS 30, the images are bright, sharp. Very lightweight and fast lens. Of course USM is faster, but we are talking here about a very low price range and the results are better than the expectations.
