Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II 35mm Primes

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

This is the lightest EF lens of all at a mere 130g. Compact and high-performance, standard lens. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp delineation from near to far focusing distances. The color balance is excellent for a standard lens.

Strength:

Sharp as a tac, no vignetting, excellent glass quality. Can be found at a drop dead price of U$85 at mail-order companies. A must have if you are making photography a hobby. If you have the money (~$380), upgrade to the 50mm f1.4 USM lens that has better/top notch build quality (metal ring, USM, shell, MF when still in AF mode).

Weakness:

Feels a bit light and cheap..., but you get what you pay for. Although I have not heard of any of them breaking or wearing out. From many owners (in newsgroups). There are no other lenses at that price. Every other fix lense goes for $300+. I had the same problem "Liam O" had with them - "...When you buy one, have a look through it off-camera, and make sure there are no little black bits inside it. For some reason this lens seems to have these bits in it from the factory." I had the exact same problem. I first bought the lens from CameraWorld.com (Cameraworld of Oregon) and the lens came with what looked like a chip or glass bit stuck in the middle of one of the internal lens. Returned it for a refund and paid $5 more at Calumet but managed to check it out at the store before buying.

I had a Canon EF 28-135mm USM IS lens for my Elan 7e and found that I was using a 50mm focal point very often. I already have a MF 50mm on my Nikon FE, and decided to get this lens for my Canon body. I love the picture quality of this lens for the price. A must have if you are thinking of learning more about photography and composition. F1.8 is a fun change from my f3.5-4.6 zoom lens. Excellent photo quality from f1.8-f22.

Customer Service

Calumet and Camera World of Oregon both had excellent customer service reps.

Strength:

Focuses fast even without USM, noise isn''''t as noticeable one might think, f/1.8 for less than $80 is almost unheard of.

Weakness:

Again, a little light weight but not necessarily a weakness...

Inexpensive prime lenses are hard to come by. This one is a must have. Doesn''''t have USM but it manages to focus quite well without it. First look, it doesn''''t appear to be very durable but what lens is? For less than $80, this lens provides great photos and focuses very well in low light. Mounted it to my 7e and began rattling off photos at 4fps.

Very good: Contrast, sharpness and focusing. Light weight but feels well built. Probably a best buy at only $85. Worked well with my new Elan 7E. This was my first roll with this new combo and I''m very well pleased.

Customer Service

Strength:

Sharp, good contrast, affordable, light. brightens up viewfinder, makes you work on picture composition.

Weakness:

Construction could be better but the price is equivalent to quality. Glass is great. other than that, none for the price and performance. no matter what brand you buy into, pick up a 50mm.

Excellent lens for the money!! This is my first slr combo (elan2/50mm). I love the fast aperture which has been useful in night shooting. well worth the money. good choice if 50mm 1.4 is too expensive. recommended to own even if you own a zoom. i have used usm and the autofocus on this little guy is still fast. use good film too! i shot with reala and i was like whoa! i also used the kodak 400CN, which has grain as good as 100!

Customer Service

never tried it yet.

Strength:

Great optics, great contrast, great speed for low-light or slow film situations.

Weakness:

None considering the price!

I bought this lens just because it is the best speed for dollar lens that I know of. F1.8 for $100. I''ve mostly used it for B&Ws, and it has quickly become one of my favorite lenses. I was literally blown away by an indoor shot I took with this of a piano player who was backlit by sunny sky--that shot is now on his CD cover. This lens handled it perfectly.

Strength:

Quite a bargain.Min. aperture of 1.8 is very useful indoors. Only weighs about 1/4 pound.Internal focus.

Weakness:

Non USM, but really not that big of a deal. Plastic and not the most solid lens, but for an $85 lightweight 50mm that performs, who cares.

Get this lens. For the money it is one of the best Canon has to offer. Much more useful than using the 50mm focal length of the zooms.

Strength:

One of the best in optical performance in the EF range. Light, fast, cheap.

Weakness:

Plastic, a bit noisy (non USM)

I used this lens for 6 years. It never broke, but I am a mountain climber :) (but my friend broke it at the last month :)
I got really great results, even at wide open. I could take a picture from my hand at only a candle light! (with an Ektar 1000)
Good standard lens if You would like to get great sharpness, great contrast, and good color rendition. My best pictures was taken with this lens! Maybe I will buy a new one again...

Customer Service

awful, and expansive here in Hungary. Buy a new one if it is broken :)

Very sharp. Compact, and convenient. A must have. I preety much have replaced my 28-80 lens with this lens because of the clarity. The only time I use my zoom lens is when I need the zoom and the wide angle.
