Strength:

No distortion noted unless intended (by tilting). Color, contrast and sharpness second to none. Lightweight, but well made.

Weakness:

None noted

This Nikkor lens is a must for landscape or journalism work. It has very low distortion. When used properly held level,(not tilted) unless desired, the lens does not exhibit any distortion. Color rendition, contrast and sharpness are extremely high. Enlargements of photos taken with this lens to 11x17 on Velvia made do not get any better.

Can't think of any

This is a great lens. Always gives sharp results and the angle is great for getting people in the frame with loads of background. I wasn't sure about getting this lens after having used a zoom (28-200) before but this lens is now always on, it always seems to provide an interesting view. I couldn't believe the quality compared to the 50mm/1.8 Nikon, this is built in Japan and it seems way more sturdy.

Strength:

Very nice quality of build. Used in manual focus my example has a very nice dampened "feel" to it that many AF lenses do not have. That's nice since this lens splits time mounted on both my F4 and FM3a. AF speed is very fast and moderatly quiet compared to larger Nikon lenses. This lens can be used wide open or stopped down and will give consistently sharp results. The physical size of this lens results in your having no excuses to not have it with you wherever you go. As I said earlier, judged only by it's ability to make great images and not in it's ability to evenly light a test wall wide open this lens is a "10".

Weakness:

Like any AF lens, the plastic construction is a step down from traditional Nikkor build-quality. This lens is made in Japan, though, and is more than a step or two in quality above Nikon's "Chinese" Nikkors. If you habitually go around taking pictures of evenly lit brick walls you'll most likely see some distortion and corner darkness wide open at f2.8, but I don't remember the last time I did that so I am very pleased!

Excellent moderately wide-angle lens. For an autofocus model I was impressed with the quality of the finish. Seems like a heavy-weight compared to my 50mm f1.8! I really like the angle of view this lens produces. This is the very limit of wide angle that can be truly useful for lots of applications. Go wider and the wide angle effect you get becomes to much for more subjects than not. I read reviews like everyone else and you hear about typical Nikkor distortion used wide open and darker corners than center, but folks, that is when a lens is tested on an evenly lit test subject. How many REAL pictures like that do you take! Buy this lens a take PICTURES with it and you'll find you've bought a keeper.

Customer Service

Never had to use, but I bought this new with a 5 year warranty. Nice.

Strength:

no distortion (when the camera is parallel with the subject); compact and light; outstanding sharpess; incredible contrast; (When the people see the photos taked with this lens they always say "Did you use de circular polarizer?" and I didn''t use. excelent colour saturation (you must pay attention when use polarizer to don''t get over polarization); it takes on cheap 52mm filters; Cheap (a bargain)

Weakness:

none;

If you have to choose only one wide angle lens, so this is for you. This is the best wide angle lens in nikkor collection. My best lens. sharp crisp center to corner; no vignetting (you need to use a oversized CP or a thin one to don''t get vignetting in f/5,6 and wider. On small apertures you don''t get vignetting with any filter - using only one filter). Fantastic colour saturation;

Customer Service

In Brazil is good.

Strength:

sharp, well-built, fast, not very expensive for the quality, no barrel distortion, light and small, better manual-focus feeling than my 50mm1.8

Weakness:

none for the moment

I really like this lens, it seems well built, and it''s sharp, fast and with no barrel distortion. I was used to my only lens, the AF 50mm 1.8, with its neutral perspective, and 24mm gives you a lot of fun when composing. It''s also light and small (not much bigger than the 50) and this is a good feature when you carry the lens in your backpack, specially in mountaineering. The only thing that tricks me is that when mounted on my fm2n, it seems slightly, just slightly, defocused at infinity; mounted on an f80, the AF works well at infinity, so I suppose there''s no problem with my unit. Anyway, the pics seem well focused. Has anyone experienced this????

Strength:

This lens can be used on my F3 and any other 35mm Nikon camera built in the last 30 or so years.

Weakness:

Plastic, we''''''''ll see how it holds up. Sorry, I''''''''m old school.

It''''''''s Nikon glass, it''''''''s good stuff. Outstanding sharpness and contrast, about like my manual focus Nikkor lenses. I''''''''ve only used it for about a year, time will tell if this glass will hold up. If 20mm is too wide and 28mm is not enough, you may want to check out this focal length.

Strength:

Great all around photo journalism lens a must have as the lens is very sharp and produces vivid colors even at f2.8. Buy this lens as it will force you to become a better photographer.

Weakness:

Plastic build, small focus ring (on non "D" versions)I dropped mine from about 4ft, landing on and craking the filter threads. Although the lens remains operational,I would still recomend this lens to anyone who uses nikon products.

The 24mm lens is by far my favorite, sharpest lens with in my bag. I tend to use the lens the most, as I perfer to play with composition with the foreground and background in focus. Great lens for environmental portraits and nature. I''m currenly useing the later non-"D" model that is composed of plastic with a small focus ring. I dropped the lens :( and the filter ring cracked, though the lens is still completly operational. I use the lens too much to send it in for repair. The newer "D" lens appears to be better built and would be a better alternative or the MF 24mm AIS would work.

Customer Service

I use this lens too much to wait 4-6 weeks for a repair. Waiting until the lens dies and I have to buy another one.

Strength:

sharp, clean, small, top notch optic, edge-to-edge performance, relatively cheap

Weakness:

flares readily, front element is a bit exposed

A very compact lens for almost anything. This is my staple lens for almost any type of shooting- from street photography, photojournalism, to landscape shots. The contrast and edge-to-edge sharpness cannot be matched by any other lens in its class. What is amazing is the amount of detail this lens can capture- I see it on the film all the time. I have zooms in the same range and although those Nikkors are good, this prime has a bit more bite that lets you know you are using top quality equipment. I do not have the D version so I must be careful when using the fill flash. For sure, the D version is a tiny bit more useful. It is so small that combined with a compact Nikon body, it can be considered a "compact camera." Flare is somewhat of an issue because it wreaks havoc with the internal coatings. A strategically placed hand should suffice. Be careful when getting a smudge onthe lens- smudges readily lower contrast and saturation on this lens, causing flare ups. Because of the size and performance and its ability to be used on any Nikon body, this lens is indispensible. For me, I consider this 24 prime my standard lens with its ability to do everything on the street and to be able to do landscapes in a pinch. The small filter size is also welcome for graduated filters! For scouting about on the street, this lens can get close and get superb environmental shots.

Strength:

Very little edge distortion, extremely contrasty, very sharp. Good build quality.

Weakness:

None I can think of.

The 24mm is a snug little lens that will easily fit in your pocket. Its a fantastic choice of wide-angle lens (over the 20mm which I personally find a bit too wide for my needs). This lens certainly takes pride of place in my collection of Nikkors. I''d highly recommend this lens to any serious landscape photographer.
