Strength:

Price, sharpness, f1.8, build

Weakness:

A Bit slow, prone to flare like other lenses in this class so polarizer really a must

SIGMA AF 24 1.8 EX ASP F/CANON $242 at Delta HOYA 77 SUPER HMC CIRCULAR POLA PRO 1MM $98 at Delta HOYA 77 SUPER HMC UV PRO 1MM $40 at Delta I couldn’t afford the Canon 20 mm at this point (when you add hood, filters, etc -- $500+) and the Sigma 20mmF1.8 has a unique size 82mm so I chose the 24 mm Sigma from Delta – just $242 -- I am very pleased so far having tested this lens for two days now. It is one sharp lens for this money! Also I have the Sigma 70 –200 f2.8 and the filter size of 77 mm is the same so I can share my Polarizer -- the UV filter sits on the zoom and the polarizer sits on the 24 mm. …ie a cost effect solution IMO for those who want to compliment there sigma zoom.. I agree with most everything said at the below review site about this lens – give it a 3.93 - 4 rating – close to the Canon 24 mm f1.4 and the Canon 20 mm F2.8 and the Sigma 20mm f1.8 – just not quite as wide – but eventually I’ll buy a wide prime in the teens when they get the mush of those teens worked out!: http://www.photozone.de/bindex2.html I tested by comparing my Canon 50 mm f1.4 to the Sigma F1.8. I used newspaper and set the 50 mm to cover the same width as the 24 mm – on tripod, comparing F stops at similar ss. Well, believe it or not at f1.8 the sigma is slightly sharper than the canon in the center – at the edges the canon is a bit better. At F8 I could not tell the difference in sharpness at the center and at the edges throughout for both lenses. At f4 and f1.8 the canon appeared to have a bit of an advantage at the edges. The sigma 24 is not a fast lens to change focus lengths, but I found it to focus in low light situations nicely. Of the 100 shots I’ve taken, about 5% showed some signs of flare – but I was seeing the sun or light flare in the viewfinder before I took the shots and I’m able to control it better with the polarizer – lenses in this range will be more prone to flare. The color was good and per the review website better than the 15 –30 sigma which is overly warm or “browny in appearence– the 24 is only slightly warm much like the Canon 16 – 35 but nothing to complain about IMO – just a ting of very slight yellow cast from the coatings sigma uses that can be handled easily in photoshop. So I’m pleased – where can you beat such a deal -- $242 – I’ll likely get a 35 mm f2 Canon lens and a wide in the teens someday – so this

Weakness:

none that I have seen yet

I just purchased this lens to give me a more coverage in some of my landscape shooting. I was a bit surprised to see how easy is was to switch it from auto-focus to manual, after reading the reviews that said it was a pain. So far, I really like the lens and I'm happy with the purchase, since I can now use the same filters on this lens as I do for my 80-200 Nikkor.

Strength:

fast lens wide

Weakness:

slow AF in low light

I was looking for a fast wide angle lens for journalistic wedding coverage and figured I would try this one before spending 5x as much on the 28mm/f1.4 Nikkor. I read the reviews here and expected a very good lens to use in low-light conditions. I've only used this lens on my Fuji S1 digital camera which can really show a lenses weaknesses in sharpness and clarity. Although I have had very good results in well-lit conditions I have had unsatisfactory results in low-light conditions where I am shooting at f2.0 @1/45th in 1600 mode. Even at that shutter speed i should have decent results. It's hard to get an image that is not soft. It may be a result of poor focusing because sometimes manual focus is easier in low-light conditions. I expect to test it more at an upcoming wedding at other apertures and with my film camera to see if results are more pleasing.

Strength:

It''''s sharp No distortion or flare The focus is fast It''''s a work horse

Weakness:

No, nothing that i can think of..

This i a great lens, the glass is top stuff. I purchased this lens becous i wasn''''t happy with the sharpness. One major thing is, that the lens have made me a better photographer... If you compare the picture taken with my old zoom lens and the new Sigma 24mm. Then the 24mm picture are the best, i work harder to get better pictures.... Great for streetphotography..

Strength:

Fast lens -$630 Canadian Pesos, MUCH cheaper than Canon equivalent, -Very sharp pictures, minimal distortion -Great colour and contrast

Weakness:

-Two stage AF switch, pain in the ass -Heavy -AF did not work out of the box, got replaced

I must start by saying that this special order lens arrived with a dead AF system. IE: it didn''t autofocus at all. Considering I waited 2.5 weeks for this lens that was supposed to arrive in ''5 days'', I was NOT happy. Luckily the store (London Drugs) replaced it with another lens that an employee had ordered. I bought this lens mainly because I couldn''t afford Canon''s L-series equivalent, but wanted a ''professional'' lens. I have taken many photos; B&W, colour, slides etc, and have been very happy with the performance. The price for this quality of lens is great, but I do admit that if I had the money I would have bought the Canon L series glass. I guess that''s the thing though, I''ll never now if the Canon L series is really worth the money and hype cus at this rate I''ll never be able to afford it. It''s hard to justify spending so much cash on Canon when you can get multiple Sigma EX lenses for the same price. Like I said the quality of this lens (the one that worked) is great. Buy Sigma you won''t be disappointed.

Customer Service

London drugs replaced the same day, although the only reason they had a replacement is that an employee had special ordered the lens the same time as me.

This lense over all is very nice. The picture quality is wonderful; free of distortion, low apeture, and macro abilities are great. Lense is travelable and easy to use.

Strength:

1) large aperture
2) surprisingly no distortion
3)Sharp (as one can expect from any primes)
4) Expensive (almost the same price as the corresponding branded one).

Weakness:

1)downgrading sparkle finish
2)2-touch manual focus.(why not put on your HSM, sigma?)

The most impressive thing about this lense is that it is totally free of distortion. Very much like my canon 50 mm f1.8. Large aperture give you a bright viewfinder preview, that's a plus.
I personally don't like to use a focal length wider than 24mm. This lense let me hide my canon 20-35 into my cabinet and never touch it again.
I don't want to talk too much about the sharpness for a prime lense, since I've never find a modern prime lense that is noticeably soft. If you are interested in buying a prime, branded or third partied, buy it with confidence.
The is no vignetting wide open even with a very thick polarizer. Little flare also if you put one the included hood.
It can take close up picture up to 1:2.7. Some time you'll be amazed by the close up photo take by a wide angle lense, very unique perspective.
It is a shame for sigma to design such a EX finish for their profesional line. It is downgrading looking and easy to lost its paint. (The EX finish of my star lense 70-200 f2.8 HSM EX is even worse looking than this one). The old ZEN finish is my favor. Like that of sigma 300/f4 MACRO HSM.
Though it sounds pretty expensive for a third party lense, it comes with everything including the beatiful hood and well padded case. I never tried canon 24/f2.8, but I beleive this sigma lense is very hard to beat. Highly recommended!
