Strength:

sharpness across the frame even wide open.

Weakness:

a little flare prone at widest apertures.

I bought this lens in 1990 for my first eos camera (630) and still use it today. It is every bit as sharp as canons 24mm and probably a little better built. You will find that this lens is much sharper than the 24mm setting of any zoom lens availible. I only wish Sigma was able to update the chip on mine to make it work with my Elan 11e. (its too old)

Customer Service

they were good. you will need them frequently with the current crop of poorly constructed Sigmas.

Weakness:

Max ap on Pentax is 3.5 Loud focus Soft focus

Thought I got a great deal off of ebay on this little lens. However, the more I have used it the more I have grown to not like it. On Pentax mounts max opening is 3.5. If it stopped down to 22, very soft focus on enlargements. The focus ring is a loose, but this could be just this one lens. It also has a problem with vignetting. Good lens for the money, but for a little more I would rather have the Pentax 24mm 2.0 with it internal focusing

Strength:

great value for money, good quality sharpness, tough (has survived the dust and heat of trips to Egypt and India, and the wet in rain forests in southern New Zealand), light/small

Weakness:

You will only get one stardard size screw in filer before you get some vinigeration. I''ve not had a problem using Cokin P filter system with this lens.

I''ve found this to be a great all round lens, especially for travel and landscapes. It’s small, and easy to use on manual focus. I’ve read the reviews below that say that auto-focus is slow and noisy – I’ve not found it to be slow (on a Nikon mount), and auto-focus makes some noise, but no more than my other lens. I’ve found landscapes very sharp (esp. around f22), and great depth of field. The close focus (i.e. macro) ability is a real bonus, a difference perspective for close up photos (you will not get depth of field to infinity when focusing very close). I’ve also found it a very useful travel lens for use in situations with little light where you cannot use a tripod (i.e. museums, historical sights etc). In this situation f2.8 (and the light pulling power of wide angle lens) has been very useful. I’ve not noticed a difference between level of distortion on this lens compared with a Sigma 17-35 (set at 24) and a friends Cannon 24mm lens. In summary, if you are a beginner/intermediate photographer looking for a wide angle for landscapes or travel, I’d highly recommend this lens.

Strength:

Sharp stopped down. Feels solid. Rediculously cheap price for a 24mm with more than acceptable optics.

Weakness:

Loud, and hunts a bit in low light.

I''''m somewhat suprised that this lens doesn''''t have a higher rating on this site. I''''ve gotten countless sharp images from this lens when stopped down below f/4. One word to the wise, though, if you own an Elan 7, you might have to send it back in to Sigma for "programming," or the aperature might not work. I sent mine in, and they had it back to me "programmed" in working order within 4 days of me sending it out (no charge).

Strength:

Sharp Lens, small and lightweight - I'm one of those who magnifies prints to try and read street signs and newspapers.

Weakness:

Flare can be seen with the sun, a light bulb, or a reflection of the sun on a white surface. Flare is an issue.

Distortion (barel) can be seen on lines running verticaly from top of frame to bottom. I don't have a 24mm-70mm zoom to compare it to or a manufacturer prime lens either.

For the price this lens will get you sharp taking pictures in confined spaces and you might not regret losing it on a trip.

An excellent lens. I used this lens on a trip to Joshua Tree Nat'l Park a few years ago, and the images I got were excellent. Sharp, contrasty, colorful. I shot transparency film, and my slides were breathtaking (I'm not promoting my skills here; it's hard to take a bad photo at Joshua Tree).
For the low cost, you get a lot of bang for your buck.
The 24mm focal length is, in my opinion, the best for landscape photography.
28mm isn't wide enough, and my 20mm is slightly too wide.
I can't reccomend this lens enough.

Strength:

Sharp lens with little distortion, even when wide open. Much less expensive than the competing consumer primes. Relatively large f/2.8 aperature. Distance/DOF scale with infrared mark. Feels solidly built. Close focusing distance, macro is 1:4.

Weakness:

Lens hood mounts to filter threads, so you vignette if using a filter and hood at the same time. No vignetting with filter or lens hood alone. For some people the "zen" finish eventually rubs off and front element can come loose. Noisy, slow focusing with focus ring in bad location.

Great lens for the price. Focusing and lens hood could have been designed better, but it's not too much of a problem under most circumstances. Good way to go if you need an affordable, sharp, wide angle lens that won't be subjected to abuse.

Strength:

Sharp, pretty even once you stop down by 1 stop. A bit of falloff at max aperature, but not too bad.

Weakness:

As one might expect, the only way to avoid vignetting is to use a bigger filter and an expander ring.

I've no idea what the person who had flare and sharpness problems was seeing, perhaps it would be worth checking the rest of the chain. I've not seen either with this lens except in very extreme circumstances where I really can't fault the flare, sun was directly on the front element.

For the price, this is astonishingly good.
