Strength:

Sharp, small and light.

Weakness:

Very noisy and slow AF. Bad construction. Poor quality control.

This lens died on me four times, and I finally sold it. Sigma quality control badly needs improvement. Optically very good. The electronics and AF are sadly lacking quality.

Customer Service

Who tells "avoid Sigma" ? Did you find a better lens for this money ? I think you will not find one !
OK, focus speed is terrible slow, but you will not use a 24mm lens for sports or actions. Therefore this is not a problem for me !
Vignetting MAY occur, but I use it with Cokin type "P" filters and these filters are really BIG.

Strength:

- optical quality is acceptable
- price is not expensive

Weakness:

- extremely noisy (mine is for Canon EF mount)
- slow focus
- 52 mm filter is too small. black corners will be observed when using insertion filter like Cokin)

The main problem is customer service in Hong Kong. very impolite staff from the customer service to the tea lady. One time when the internal motor of the Sigma 24 mm lens broke down and I sent the lens for repair (only half year of use!) When I request for repair, the Sigma staff suspected that I have mis-used the lens and it is all my own fault to the problem. I also got a feeling that I was begging for help

I swore to myself, I will try my best not to buy Sigma again.

Customer Service

- Sigma's customer service in Hong Kong is hopeless

Strength:

Cheap, sharp, low distortion, fast.

Weakness:

AF mechanism.

This is a nice lens at this price (I perchased it from an auction). It is very sharp when stopped down at the centarl portion of image. It's performance is reasonable when wide open (mine is a pentax K-mount). I also checked for distortion and sharpness away from the center near it's closest focus. I found a slight barrel distortion and little lack of sharpness at edges. Color balance and contrast are both satisfactory.

Strength:

Very cheap (compared to Pentax price. Sharp. Close focussing ability.
Lacking flare.

Weakness:

Matt finish is hard to keep clean. Not as solid as Pentax lenses.

Good reasonably priced lens. It's close focussing ability is a big plus.

Strength:

This is a VERY sharp lens. Small and light. Macro (1:4) has been suprisingly usefull, it focuses closer than my Nikon 50 1.7.

Weakness:

More barrel curvature than I expected.
A little noisier and slower autofocus than my Nikon 50 1.7

A great lens if you take pictures of subjects that don't have stright lines, and especially if you only need wide angles some of the time for cool effects, contrasty black and whites, etc. Not good for architectural work since buildings 'bend' off center of image - but then again, for that you need a large format controls with bellows. I'd gave it 3 stars if a Leica 24 is a 5 and other primes are a 4, but because of sharpness I gave it a 4.

Strength:

Cheap compared to the Canon EF alternative. Pretty durable.

Weakness:

Despite what others say here, I didn't find this lens very sharp, especially wide open or stopped way down. LOUD and sloooooooowwwwwww focus.

OK for a while if you can't afford the manufacturer's 24mm. But you will get tired of it.

Strength:

Not too expensive.

Weakness:

Would not stop down to f2.8 on Pentax bodies! Would only stop to f3.5. It also skipped f4.x completely! Dealer and I could not get it to stop down on any Pentax body.

I couldn't get it work properly so I didn't have a chance shoot with it. However, after trying 2 other 24/2.8's for Pentax mounts in the shop and having them all fail, I'm planning to stay away from it and will 2nd quess other Sigma purchases. Too bad, it "looked" like a nice lens.

Customer Service

Typical, "compatability problem, send it to us".

Strength:

Very sharp from 4 and smaller aperture, good at 2,8 too.
Mine is manual, and has a very good "feel" to the focusing ring, which is rubberised for a positive grip.
Super-useful close focusing possibility as it goes down to 18 cm.Some odd image-making easily performed at a bargain.
Hood included.

Weakness:

Aperture-ring (mine is Nikon mount) not with the best "feel", not rubberised & with too small ribs gives less than perfect grip.
With filter mounted forget about using the hood.It WILL cause visible "corner-cutting"!
Visible distorsion, I believe this is what is worse with this lens compared to fex Canon/Nikon counterparts, although sharpness IS equal.
This lens is not manufactured anymore.
(But, the new 24mm/1,8 DF might be worth getting, if it´s as good sharpness wise).

Now, or soon, only found used:Go & get one if you like trying some wide-angle, not wanting to spend "too much" cash.
I have heard that some people don´t like the AF speed & noise with Canon EF mount, try, then buy, is the way to go, I think.
When shooting the sea or other subjects with straight lines, be careful or accept some visible bending of lines.I think it´s acceptable on most of the images I´ve shot with it.
The lens is very compact, a bonus in a crowded camera bag...
