    Weakness:

Short and sweet! This lens is very sharp and has the best range for it's class. Color saturation and accuracy is right on. Aperture -For a lens this wide all you need is F4! It won't make a big enough difference to spend the $ and buy a F2.8 If I was buying a 24-135 range lens , then I would say ok and spend the extra $500. and get the faster F stop for the back blur, but on a wide lens as this one you wouldn't get much of a backround blur even if you had a f2.8 lens. It's a great len's and is one of the reasons I just switched from Nikon to Canon and I don't regret "yet":)!

    Strength:

I'm sure I can hear my 10D pleading with me not to take it off.

    Weakness:

    None.

Admittedly this is my first wide angle lens but the results I'm getting on the 10D are outstanding. I was thinking about purchasing a used 16-35/2.8L but am glad I held out. Its L series, what more needs to be said.

    Strength:

Half the costs of the 16-35. Sharp images even when opened wide at f4. Very robust, very well constructed.

    Weakness:

I am searching they yet. Perhaps that a prime is better or that it could have a faster aperture but the world it isn´t perfect. The things that it do, it do fine.

It´s a wonderfull lens. It´s very sharp, the colors are saturated and the the image it´s contrast. I have say that I am using with a EOS-10D so I don´t know how it works with a ful frame camera, but I have read that it´s good also. The cuality is similar to the famous canon EF70-200 f/4, to the canon EF24-70 f/2.8 or to the canon EF16-35 f/2.8 It´s very robust, very well constructed. It isn´t very heavy. I have fallen in love. If you don´t really need the f/2.8 from the canon EF16-35 f/2.8 the canon EF17-40 it´s your lens.

In my country, it have a bad distribution, there is over-demand.

This lens is an outstanding value for the money. I own other "L" lenses, and this ranks right up there in image quality. It's also indispensable with my EOS 10D, offering the only real alternative for wide-angle shots on a Canon digital SLR, with an effective focal length of 27-64mm. Sorry, but I'm not into writing long reviews. That said, if you have any specific questions, please email me at jonah96@hotmail.com

    Strength:

    - Nice L Lens with a reasonable price - Sharp - Fast AF

    Weakness:

    - Above 28 mm (35 & 40 mm) is a little bit soft compare to my friend's 16-35 mm, but still better than other lenses

I purchased this lens last month for fit with my EOS 3. I love the brightness of this lens. Very sharp result with a good contrast & great color reproduction.

    Strength:

price, sharpness/detail, build quality, lightweight, fast and accurate focusing

    Weakness:

None that I can think of.

I own a Canon 10D. After reading reviews after reviews and web forums, I decided to buy this lens. Let me tell you: this is one incredible lens. It is my favorite among my L lenses: 24-70, 70-200. Given the 1.6X crop factor of the 10d, this lens is a perfect match. Forget the 28-135IS as your first lens, because it is really horrible in low light. This lens is every bit as portable, but the quality of the construction and images are worth the extra $$. I haven't experienced any problem with f4.0 in low light situation. Focusing is quiet, extremely accurate. Contrast is superior from side to side, wide open. Sharpness is comparable to all the "big boys" (L lenses) that I have used. I have found no issue with this lens after taking a few hundred shots of my baby with this lens. Highly recommended.

    Strength:

Sharp and contrasty for the range. Well buld and nice looking lens.

    Weakness:

Soft at 35 to 40mm wide open. Zoom ring too near the camera mount. Those with big hands may find it less easy to zoom.

It is a beatiful lens that balances well. The lens is sharp at 17mm and 24 even wide open and better when stopped down. However, at 40mm, softness can be detected at the edge wide open. Overall it is a very good lens for that range and price.

    Strength:

Very sharp at f4 at all focal lengths and simply excellent stopped down even just one stop. Solid build with environmental sealing. Lens does not change size with zooming or focusing. Lightweight and compact for an ultra-wide angle zoom.

    Weakness:

I don't really see any weaknesses. Of course, its not faster than f4, but its also half the price of the Canon 16-35L f2.8 and most likely at least as good optically.

I use this lens with my Canon D60 and am very pleased with it. Given the 1.6 crop factor vignetting is never an issue and I can simply use the much cheaper regular UV filters instead of the expensive thin ones. I am very impressed with the sharpness of the lens. Fully open (f4) this lens is very good. Center sharpness is excellent and only the lower far left corner (of my lens) may be a tad soft, but only ever so slightly and certainly not very noticeable on prints up to 8x10. Stopped down even one stop, sharpness is excellent throughout the frame. Focusing is fast and silent as may be expected from an USM lens. The lens features FTM, which is always great. Solid build, yet lightweight and not too bulky despite the 77mm filter-size. I hate bulky lenses and find this lens to be just right. Overall I find this lens to be an excellent value for money if you really want superb optics.

    Strength:

    contrast, colors, resolution, sharpness

    Weakness:

After using the SMALL Contaxt G2 it seems a big bit of kit.

I have just purchased the 10D along with the 17-40 Lens. I must admit to being more than a little worried that I would be disappointed with the sharpness, contrast etc, as I use a collection of Zeiss lenses for my Contax G2. My review of this lens on my 10d after a couple of weeks use are nothing short of 'Over the moon'. This is a really nice lens, very sharp, excellent contrast, pure color. ABSOLUTE TOP 5 STAR RECOMENDED.

    Strength:

Tack sharp even at f/4, both at 17mm and 40mm Price is great compared to the 16-35 17-40 range is, for me, a lens I could use for most, if not all, wedding photos I would typically do.

    Weakness:

f/4 is half the light of f/2.8

I purchased this lens as a single (walk-around) zoom for my 10D. I had purchased the 20mm and 28mm Sigma f/1.8's last year when I bought my D30, thinking that they'd be fine for a digital camera and the faster aperture would allow better focusing. But I was simply blown away when I opened the first images from the 17-40 made with the 10D. Right away I printed a straight-from-camera 13x19 print of a landscape at 17mm f/4 handheld. It was stunning! The Sigmas are now on ebay and I've made the decision to go with all Canon EF or L glass from here on out.
