Strength:
Very light, yet highest quality construction typical of L series. Ideal wideangle solution for the current line up of DSLR.
Weakness:
F/4.0 but not really a weakness considering how sharp it is. I am using it on 10D. Optically it's better than any 17-35L I have owned before. It is very sharp and contrasty at all focal length even wide open at f/4.0. The weekest focal length of this lens seems to be at 40mm. Quite a surprise. If you want further technical review of this lens, you can read my comparative review at http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=5119340. I think this is the best canon L series lens for the money along with the famed 70-200mm f/4.0L. With this lens, there is no need to stop down to get a sharp picture. One fine lens, indeed! Give it a try. Similar Products Used: 17-35L, 28-70L, 70-200L, 28-135IS, 50mm f/1.4, etc. |

Strength:
100% professional grade quality that's fairly affordable. Pretty lightweight for a lens that performs like this. USM ultra fast and accurate focusing.
Weakness:
requires a very large 77mm filter. the lens is already kind of big but becomes enormous with the lens hood on. I purchased this specifically to use with my 10D for outdoor photography. Because of the 10D's 1.6x factor this lens's view performs similar to a 28-70 zoom. The "L" optics are sharp and natural as expected. Strength:
Less bulky than the 16-35. Half the costs of the 16-35. Sharper images even when opened wide at f4 when used with 1Ds in comparison to the 16-35. This is one sharp lens in comparison to the previous 16-35/2.8 lens I own but at half the costs. I have previously used my 16-35/2.8 lens on both the D60 as well as the 1ds while the 16-35/2.8 performed quite well on the D60 perhaps due to the 1.5X factor, but it performed rather poorly with my 1Ds. Just about most of the shots came out blurred even when closed down to f11. I have heard rumors that this is a typcial inherit problem that is associated with the 1Ds with ultra wide zoom. That might be true as the same sigma 15-30 zoom also gives soft images overall. But when I finally tried out the new 17-40, the problem apparently is no longer there. All images from 17-40 is as sharp as it could be even opened up to it's max f4 aperture. Plus at half the costs as it's "bigger brother", it's definitely worth looking into. For me, this is the only way to go if you want to capture ultra wide angle with the 1Ds and yet has the flexibility that goes from 17 to 40.
