Strength:

focal range Internal focus

Weakness:

no lense hood included flimsy construction zoom creep

nice range in zoom, average f3.5, was surprisingly fast anyhow. Overall good sharp images at through 85mm, allthough could be sharper at 24....and be careful of vignetting with a polarizer at 24mm. Good quality lense for the average photographer looking for something a bit better than a standard 28-80. I would also recomend 28-135 IS......seems tougher, and IS

Strength:

Focal range, size, USM, value.

Weakness:

A tiny bit prone to flare, 67mm filter size is odd.

A great all in one lens - period. You can get sharper lenses (i.e. primes/ L-zooms), but on a budget & used correctly - this is a great start and covers a much more useable focal range than other zooms. Having browsed through other users'' comments, here are a few more: A MUST upgrade over kit (i.e. 28-80 f4-5.6 zooms) Either this lens or its 28-105 cousin WITH THE MATCHING HOOD will produce FAR superior results. People seem to complain about the "distortion" produced by this lens. Yes, there is some. But most of it is natural, if you don''t keep the plane of the film parallel to your subject, you will get linear distortion with ANY lens - espescially wide angle lenses. The wider the lens, the harder it is to avoid this. Distortion due to the lens design is likely negligible for most users. A little care in the composition step will take care of most of it. Based on some of the reviews, you''d think folks are sitting at home photographing graph paper. I use this lens mainly for snapshots (no larger than 8x10) with Fuji NPH and am extremely satisfied w/ the results. The extra 4mm on the wide end is worth much more than the 20mm or so it gives up on the long end to most of its competitors, IMHO.

Customer Service

N/A - I''ve heard its not so good - but no problems.

Good, versatile lens with very usefull zoom range. 24 mm is great fun and gives very good results in outdoor situations. 85 mm is usually enough zoom for most ''people'' pictures. The only other lens I need to bring is a real tele zoom.

Strength:

size, weight, silent operation, quick focus, range and reasonable close focus ability.

Weakness:

some distortion at 24mm and a little slow for available light.

Highly recommended for non critical work such as weddings etc. Not sharp enough and too high in distortion for arcitechture etc.

Strength:

Very good building quality. Nice range at 24mm that give me extra range beyond normal view. Fast AF cause of USM.

Weakness:

some flare although I put the hood on.

This the the lens that I always carry arround, because of it versatile. Not as sharp as 50mm prime, but this is a zoom.

Strength:

Good built quality, fast and silent USM AF, FTM, useful zoom range.

Weakness:

Noticeable distortion at the 24mm wide end.

Good lens for its price. I find it more useful than the EF28-105mm, especially at the 24mm end, and it stays on my camera body most of the time. However, distortion is noticeable at the wide end especially when photographing objects with straight lines perpendicular to the lens barrel. It isn't too bad at an oblique angle. Overall a very useful zoom range and good value for money.

Strength:

Good optical quality, sharp and good contrast. It it also built well. USM provides fast and accurate focusing.

Weakness:

Sometimes i get flare at the wide end. There is a bit of distortion but unless you take pictures of buildings, it wont be noticed easily. Strange filter size causes some problems for me.

A good lens but because of its weird filter size, i generally stick with my other wide-mid tele zoom, the 28-105 even though it is short 4mm on the wide end.

Strength:

great value! great focallength!

Weakness:

none!

I think this is a great lens for firstimers like myself. Very nice to use the extra 4mm on the downside (compared with the 28-105mm that I concidered). If you chose between these two think of what focallenth you will be using the most. the upper or the lower. I guarantee you that those 4mm extra on the downside does a lot to your landscapes!

Model Reviewed: EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Strength:

Good zoom range and good sharp pictures

Weakness:

It has very heavy distortion from 24mm to 50 mm. It is totally useless for group photos because the people toward the corner all look fat and ugly. It has much more distortion than my Canon EF 28-80 USM lens from 28-50mm.

For EOX IX APS may be OK because of smaller negative but not for 35mm SLR
