Model Reviewed: EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Strength:

NONE This was a piece of junk I was able to trade in ( at a loss ) and I am glad.

Weakness:

Worst distortion i have ever experianced from a CANON lens. This one is on the TAMRON super zoom super dissapointed class.

Save your money do't buy this lens. If you are looking for an excellent zoom lens invest on a 28-70 2.8 L. I would rate it as - 0, (5 thumbs down on everything) if I could.

Customer Service

From my experiance Canon's customer service is excellent. But this particular lens is nothing but problems.

Model Reviewed: EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Strength:

24mm for your perspective scenics to 85mm for portraits - all in one neat package.

Weakness:

Barrel distortion at wider focal lengths is very severe - the worst I've seen.
Poor manual focusing ring - flimsy awith little resistance.
Noticeably soft at he edges of the frame with scanned slides or larger (9x6+) prints.
Vignetting at 24mm with a standard screw-on filter (untill stoppped down to f/11).

The heavy distortion really bothered me - I enjoyed using the el-cheapo Sigma 28-80mm more than this lens (I really believe the Sigma's sharper). For the money there a far better offerings IMHO.

Model Reviewed: EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Strength:

Compact form factor and very useful focal length range.

Weakness:

Wide angle barrel distortion and a flare problem even when the lens is hooded.

Not a bad lens for the average shooter. I like the 24-85 range, fast focus and the decent sharpness. But, optically, I think you could do better. If I had the money I would replace it with fixed focal length primes or a much better zoom.

Strength:

Best range for landscape and travel, I love the 24mm, the 4mm in wide angle is more useful for me than the 20mm in tele side of 28-105mm. Very satisfy with the quality talking about this affordable price.
Light weight.

Weakness:

Of couse the quality cannot compare with prime lans, and 2.8L zoom. But you need to trade-off for the price and convenience.
Original hood is a must.

For causal use, travel, landscape, it is a good choice (esp. this affordable price). Very good range. It is not fair to compare it with prime lens and L lens, they are different categories.

Strength:

Size, performence, built, focal range.

Weakness:

Price.

Is a little more expenive (compare to the 28-105) for the same quailty but the extra 4mm, what a different. Image is at par if not better then the 28-105 but the 24mm is very useful. USM, FTM works wonderful.

Strength:

Very convenient range - 24 is really wide, and 85 is really good for portraits
USM is fast and silent

Weakness:

Bad flare even with hood on (buy the hood!!!)

My most used lens, but optical quality could be better compared to my other lenses, flare is really bad. A lot better than the cheapo 28-80.

Strength:

24mm...that's all. optically nothing to marvel at

Weakness:

67mm....who use this man??? only other culprit would be the not so good L lens 70-200 f4

I rather skip this and get 20-35 + 28-105 and use standard size filters

Customer Service

Customer service is crap! won even bother to send you brochures....

Strength:

24mm end and sharp.

Weakness:

price.

It costs more than the 28-105 but that 24mm is a lot more useful then the 105 end. Picture quailty is about the same. Sold the 28-105 and get the 24-85 and since very very happy with it. Great lens.

Strength:

Cover all daily need
24mm/f3.5 Useful especially for group photo (You need not to stand very far away when taking photo for 40 peoples)
Work well with Speedlite 420EX even at 24mm
Feel more creative at 24mm than 28mm for landscape
85mm/f4.5 quite good range although better if larger aperture)
Good quality/price ratio

Weakness:

Little distortion but expectable for the price but surely acceptable
When using 24mm for large group photo, leave some margin to so that you won't distort their face

Good and reasonable price for beginners
