Strength:

Through the powerfull magic powers of PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 8, the barrel distortion and vignetting problems of this lens has been washed away... Yay!
I tis the bargain of the decade...old or new, it's a bargain.

Weakness:

Wiped away by Photoshop Elements 8... hooray!

A very capable lens during the FILM era and forgotten by the wayside when cropped APS sized digital sensors came into the picture (sic)...
Now that FULL FRAME sensors are back with a vengeance, reclaiming the TRUE format like it was during FILM, this lens has taken OFF phenomenally...
Buy it NEW or USED, it is the hidden treasure of the decade.
You can forget about the vignetting and barrel distortion BLAH blahs of pixel willies... PHOTOSHOP Elements 8 has just fixed that up and made this lens valuable again...

Strength:

Sharp Fast focus Light,compact....a steal for the $$(even moreso used).

Weakness:

It's not a L in optical quality.But it's as good as any Canon non-L

May be Canon's most under-rated lens.Especially when price is considered.Very quick,accurate focus.Much better overall than my neighbor's $600 17-85 IS.

Strength:

Light Versatile focal range Good colors and contrast Fast focusing Inexpensive

Weakness:

A bit soft, especially wide open. A bit slow.

This is a very nice little lens, versatile and capable of producing some very good pictures. It isn't the sharpest lens in the world, but it has good contrast and good colors and I've used it for everything from wildlife to landscapes. It's light and handy and a very good walkaround lens, even with a 1.6X crop body.

Strength:

optical quality, speed, AF, value for money, compact size and light weight.

Weakness:

Maybe a little to "placcy", but it is a lower cost consumer lens. Canon should include a lens hood.

What a hidden treasure! Why Canon has replaced it with an inferior version that is less solid, slower and with a plastic mount confuses me. I bought this to use on an EOS 33, which is a backup to my EOS1V and L series kit of superb lenses. This lens was for convenience when shooting in the street or when I needed to use a compact kit with built in flash. Well all I can say is that the 28-105USM is excellent - compact, fast enough, quite, sharp and has fine colour, detail and minimal distortion. It is outstanding value for money. At all f stops and focal lengths it performs admirably. I took it around China last December and in some cases I cannot tell which shots were taken with my 24-70 f2.8L and this lens!! The focal length range combined with its widest f stops is a very good mix and is overall better that the popular 28-135 IS lens. Of course like any lens it should be used with its hood. Normal filters and even a normal circular polariser have not caused any vignetting wide open. I have run some simple tests that show it to be pin sharp and have very little distrortion at 28mm wide open unless it is shooting at an angle to the film plane. All in all this is a top quality consumer lens that will surprise fussy enthusiasts. My ratings below are based on what this lens is meant to be - not what it "could be".

Strength:

Lighter than EF28-135 IS USM while the optical quality IMHO is the same.

Weakness:

It is nice that you can attach the hood backwards when you don't use it, but it covers the zoom ring so you cannot use the zoom.

I like EF28-135 IS USM but it is too heavy for me to carry around. I wanted the same optical quality, light and small glass, and the price I could afford. This is exactly I was looking for. I wasn't sure if I needed a hood but I find it "a must" for backlight situation.

Strength:

Wide-angle and zoom in one Fast USM Excellent price/quality ratio

Weakness:

Can be a bit soft used below f5.6

This was the first I bought for my 10D to see what the 1.6x fuss was all about and to get me going. Although it is not the best lens I could ask for, this is one of the best choices I made for the zoom lens I use for snap shots indoors. Great for getting the entire room and zooming in on a face I know. The colors are a bit warm compared to my primes, but nothing to worry about. With apperature wide open I do not like the sharpness of this lens. I prefer f8.0 or up mostly anyway unless I want to isolate the subject from the background. I just got the hood after using the lens for almost 9 months. Haven't really needed it so far, flare is almost non existant unless you point the lens into the sun.

Strength:

Fast and silent AF, good build quality, decent optics for the money. You get these lenses very cheap these days after the 28-105 mark-II, 28-135 and other lenses have flooded the market.

Weakness:

For this price, no weaknesses. If I were to nitpick, optics are not so hot, which is to be expected from a lens of this price.

This was one of the first decent lenses I purchased, after upgrading from a cheap POS kit lens which came along with my first EOS (rebel?). Build quality is a notch above the kit lenses, but below the L lenses. I love the metal lens mount and solid feel. Optics are great for the money, but it doesn't come close to prime lens quality or L lens quality. The lens produces vignetting at the 28mm end and quite some distortion at the wide and long ends. Optics are OK at f/5.6 and smaller. I've made a few 8x12" prints and they are quite sharp. It was only after getting the 28-70L that I could compare this with a truly spectacular zoom. When compared to the 28-70L this lens falls flat on its face.

Customer Service

Never needed any. The lens has been going strong for 5+ years.

Strength:

Sharpness, contrast,built quality

Weakness:

Internal focusing cuts effective focal length.

This is a terrific general use lense. My version is the 1999 version with the macro designation not the earlier flower desingnation. This lens rivals fixed focal lenghts at every position. Distortion is the lowest of any zoom I have used(and there are too many to list) The Usm is quick and the manual focus override is a great feature. My only possible complaint is the internal focusing cuts the effective focal length to about 82mm at close focus, not great for head shots. Any reviews complaining about this lens are more a reflection of inexperience than this lens performance.

Strength:

Compact Not too end heavy on the Rebel 2000 Looks slick Same hood as 28mm f/1.8, saved $25 Good for scenery shots, works well indoors 58mm filters, common, cheap

Weakness:

Discontinued :( When on Ebay, buyer beware

This might be the last time that I buy used gear over the computer, but I still look. The first lens I got on an Ebay auction and didn't notice anything wrong until the third roll I used with that lens. I never had a screw-on filter get stuck until my polarizer became a bit too attached to the lens. I had to hunt for somebody with a filter wrench (thanks Judy) when even a mouse pad wouldn't work. That lens had scrached threading. Further examination showed a bit of fog or mold or something wierd inside the lens. Plus the zoom ring had a stickyness to it. Also, when I set the lens to full infinity the view actually tilted a bit. Odd. I got chumped on this one. The next lens I ordered from Adorama and there was a world of difference. No stuck filters or rough zoom. No peculiarities with the focus. The prints were pretty good with Iowa fall colors. I caught a double rainbow after a storm and received lots of compliments in my photography clss. The shots I used a intensifier filter with showed very bright yellows and reds in a wooded area. For scenery shots, this lens and roll of Royal Gold work great. Since the lens is not a monster like many of the zooms out now, I don't see a problem with it getting in the way of the pop-up flash. I also saved with this lens because it uses the same hood as the Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM which I already have.

Customer Service

Ebay one I got rid of cheap Adorama one, love it!
