Strength:

The lens is very affortable and light.

Weakness:

Built quality.

Bought this lens new and didn't work the first try. Return it and happen again on the second one. Finally got a good one but found the 28-35 is soso and photo is not too shape. Tried my friend's 24-85, a lot better lens. Should of bought that one instead.

Customer Service

Strength:

- Wonderful zoom range
- Internal focus
- Full time manual focus
- High magnification @ 105mm
- Good to excellent optics
- Takes 58mm filters

Weakness:

- Can't hold zoom when pointing downward
- A bit soft image at wide open

I bought this to replace my 28-80 for better image, faster F-stop and zoom range. This lens had never let me down. Actually, it's hard to decide between this lens and the 24-85 (marginally better optics) and the 28-135 (useful IS feature at a considerably higher price) The reasons for buying this finally are the price as it is the cheapest among those three glasses and the zoom range. Because I often wish to bring along with me a 1 piece camera. The 28-135 is absoultely a good choice if you wanna take lots of indoor photos at medium tele focal length (85mm or longer) but it is not justify to pay for the IS function as I mostly take outdoor shots and have another 85mm F1.8 lens. If you mostly take landscape, the 24-85 will be a better choice. But if what you want is an all-rounder, the 28-105 will be excellent investment.

The lens itself is quite well constructed and feels good when mounting on both my EOS 30 and EOS 300 especially when the hood (sold separately) is being attached. The image quality had out-performed my 28-80 a lot. The fast and accurate USM focus together full time manual focus features offer the user worry-free focusing. Internal focusing makes using a Cir-PL filter a pleasure since the filter mount is free from turning during focusing. To obtain best reault from this lens stop it down to F6.7 onwards. The only drawback is that the zoom is not well constructed to hold when you pointing your camera up or down.

What else you can ask for within the price range? If you don't satisfy with it's performce, try out the 28-70 F2.8L at five times the price.

Strength:

Affordable Price with reasonable quality

Weakness:

Build quality should be better, easily to get dust inside the lense.

my first and only zoom lense, it feels much better than Nikon 28-80 D and Canon 28-90 USM, but the picture quality are not good enough. My 50mm F1.8 II usually delivers better quality pictures.
at the 105mm, visible distortion in the viewfinder, at the 28mm, visible distortion on the photos.
i should go for the 28-135 IS.

Strength:

Solid, quiet, good feel for a lightweight. Standard great Canon Autofocus.

Weakness:

A little soft at either aperture end.

This is a solid lower end lens, quiet and efficient. Sharpness is so-so but certainly acceptable in it's price range and considering it is a zoom. It's hardly fair to compare it to the primes but everybody does anyway. With the performance of some of the new zooms, though this one might be getting dated. I use this one exclusively for snapshots and casual use. In a pinch, I would use it for landscapes but stay in the F5.6 to F8 range. This is a great all-around lens for beginners.

Strength:

Small and light, with very good optics for a so-called 'consumer' zoom lens. Front lens element stays put as you zoom, making it filter-friendly.

Weakness:

Like most other zooms in this range, there is some barrel/pincushion distortion at both ends. Seems sharp at all apertures, but ideal range is f/8 to f/11. Dust gets inside this lens quite easily.

This lens has become a standard consumer zoom lens for anyone who wants something better than the 28-80 or 28-90 zooms that comes with the EOS kits. It's certainly more than that, as I regularly use it for weddings and family group shots. I've seen sharp 11x14's from it, as long as you use the middle aperture range, and use slow-speed print film. Now, I'm shooting more and more slides (I had got away from this, glad I'm back!) and its sharpness and contrast are most sufficient for my needs. If I was starting from scratch, again, I'd opt for the EF 28-135 IS, which is about the same in performance, but has the valuable IS feature.

Customer Service

None ever required for an EF lens.

Strength:

Fast and sharp 28-105mm zoom in its class/price range. Small and light. Fairly good construction. 58mm filter sizes. USM, Full Time Manual focus.

Weakness:

Pincushion, and barrel distrotion are noticable, but not bad for this price/class of lens. Should be sealed better for dust, but if you take care of it you should not have any problems.

The advantage of this lens is its f/3.5-4.5 minimum aperture. It is only a little faster than the Tamron 28-105mm f/4-5.6 but it makes quite a difference in marginal situations. Also, even though it is a little faster, it does not give up sharpness and contrast at all. The Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4 does not even come close to the sharpness/contrast of the Canon -- no comparison. Optics are quite good producing sharp pictures in all focal ranges. By comparison to the Tamron, I would have to say that there is little difference in sharpness and contrast, though overall the Canon lens seems better to me (subjective reasoning here), even though it is faster. Color is more accurate on the Canon as well. Pincushion and barrel distortion is about the same, though the Canon controls them a bit more evenly from side to side. The 58mm filter size makes it easier and cheaper on your budget. Overall, a really good choice for general photography, and travel -- better than any other 3rd party 28-105mm consumer zoom and a MUST upgrade to the 28-80mm or 28-90mm that come with EOS kits. It is absolutely worth the extra $$$. If you want a better zoom than this you'll need to go for a Canon L lens and of course pay a lot more.

I am not a pro but I used this lens with my Rebel 2000 and it is superb. My pictures come out like a pro. Great Lens. You can't go wrong on this. I am casual photographer so I can't compare it to anything but you know what, I don't really care. It does the job for me and take amazing pictures. Perfect for a user like me who takes pictures of family and friends mostly indoors. Great results.

Quick and quiet focus, build quality, fast-ish apertures, sharpness of image, internal focussing, full-time focus option (even in AF)

Weakness:

by far, a better option than the standard 28-80/28-90 Canon offerings and leagues ahead of third party manufacturers at the same zoom range. I'm keen to compare this lens against Canon's 24-85 USM and Tamron's new 24-135. For 90% of shooting situations, the keen amateur could do a lot worse than this lens.

I just got this lens (along with the 100-300 USM) in the mail yesterday, so I haven't even seen what it can do. I am impressed with the quick and quiet focusing of this lens. I initially wanted this lens along with the 100-300 and placed my order with Royal Camera & Video. Boy, was this a mistake! They tried to do the old bait and switch on me with the 100-300USM, selling me on the 75-300USM instead. I got it in the mail and realized I didn't want it. I called to get an exchange for the 100-300USM, and the guy said they had a 12 week backorder! I sent it all back. Finally broke down and bought everything from B&H. What a difference! DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM ROYAL CAMERA. Anyway, I'm happy with my purchase now. On a side note, I got the lens hood for this lens (Canon EW-63II) and read some reviews of people having trouble with the lens cap. No trouble for me. I did however have trouble taking on and off the lens hood with my Tiffen Circular Polarizing Filter on. Didn't read that anywhere. So, I'm having to take it (the filter) on and off with the lens hood on, which is a little awkward. I can live with it though. I suppose if I had bought a Canon circular polarizer (more money) I wouldn't have this problem (note for those thinking of filters/accesories for this lens). Last note: I have it mounted on a Canon EOS Rebel 2000. Cool camera.....

Strength:

Lightweight
USM was nice while it lasted.

Weakness:

The zoom mechanism suffered catostrophic failure after about two weeks, vignetting all my pictures. The USM lasted about six months, and then died.

My particular unit was not up to the demands of outdoors photography. This lens is *supposed* to have good build quality. Mine didn't.

Customer Service

Horrible. Took almost 6 months to repair, and Canon decided not to repair it under warranty, as they figured I must have killed it. Thanks guys!
