Strength:

Good optical quality

Weakness:

Barrel distortion at wide end, oincushion at tele end.

One of the best choices for a standard zoom. Distortion is pretty bad, but otherwise this lens is very capable optically,is quite well built and has an excellent zoom range. Give it a try!

Great lens. Wonderful range. USM is so quiet, you have to experience it yourself. AF is very fast (again you have to experience).

To all the new people getting this lens. There are no differences between the first and second versions - only comsemtic. Version 1 has FTM, and USM. Don't believe all the marketing that Canon throws out.

I've slammed it a couple of times, much to my dismay, but it keeps out working! My advice would be to baby this thing. Take good care of it! But know that it can take a beating and keep working.

Buy a lens hood. And watch out for the barel distortion. Very easily evident.

For the value, great lens. I can't give it 5 stars, because my 50/1.8 kicks the **** out of it.

Strength:

Good focal length coverage for cost and quality.

Weakness:

None for the price.

This is the lens that I use the most. I find it's range of focal lengths very useful. I'd highly recommend it as a base zoom lens (It pairs nicely with a 100-300 lens to give a large coverage).

Strength:

solid feel
better contrast and color than any in its range and price bracket(including the canon 24-85, 28-x, sigma 28-105 f2.8-4, tamron 28-105 f4-5.6)

Weakness:

barrel/pincushion, but thats something all zooms have to deal with-which should not be a prob unless you are doing architectural stuff

great lens, as good as zooms go in this price range. DONT BE LURED BY THE SIGMA f2.8! i was and was unsatisfied by it- its practical range is 3.5 and on, which is exactly what the canon is. the sigma may have aspherical and a larger stop, but mechanically the canon dominates- usm and a solid construction. I found the sigma awkward to handle and there was some sort of problem that was causing other canon cameras to overheat when used with this lens. I didnt experience it but i certainly dont want to either. alway on my canon elan7 or eos3 unless the 50 f1.4 is there. good starter lens. I started off thinking of giving it a 4 star rating but ive changed my mind to...

As a part-time professional portrait photographer, I had to comment on lens selection. The majority of my photography is indoor studio portrait photography of children and adults. I will often use a mild soft focus filter, Tiffen FX5 or Cokin 83. This completely negates the use of an "ultra sharp" lens, such as the "L" series.
You'll find people don't always want to see every wrinkle, freckle or blemish on their face. The zoom range of this lens is also perfect for portrait work. If you will be using this lens for primarily people pictures, don't agonize over buying the "L" lens. Make sure to buy the lens hood with this lens to reduce flare and increase contrast. Absolutely great lens at a great price. If you are like me and thing the L lenses are over rated and over priced, this is a great way to go if you want to stick with Canon.

Weakness:

I maybe spoiled by my L lenses I inherited, but still . . . optically, this lens isn't going to impress you.

A fair quality lens. Color and contrast is no where close to primes or L zooms. But who cares at this price??
