Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

Standard zoom lens with an Image Stabilizer and high zoom ratio. With the Image Stabilizer turned on, you can obtain sharp, natural-looking pictures in dim lighting without using flash or a tripod. Very handy for places where flash is prohibited. Uses ring-type USM for swift, silent autofocus and full-time manual focus. Closest focusing distance is 20 in. (50 cm).

Terrific lense. I switched from a T90 and FD lenses to an EOS. This was the first of the EOS lenses I bought. I was hesitant because the plasticy feel is a big switch from the sturdy FD lenses. However, this lense takes amazing slides. It seems sharp at all apertures and zooms. My comparable FD lense was the constant aperture 35-105/f3.5 which is said to be a good lense, but this 28-135 EF seems to be consistently sharper with better contrast and color. There's a lot of reviews with accolades for the IS. I use it occasionally, but I wouldn't consider it to be the sole reason to buy this lense: keep in mind, the IS doesn't slow your subject down any, just your own shake. With or without IS, I am very impressed.

Strength:

Image stabilization works very well and the optics are very sharp. I did not find it too heavy. A really nice mate to my Elan 7

Weakness:

Gyros are a little noisier than I expected but in a quiet room when you are looking for the sound I would expect to hear it. I still get that slight sense of motion sickness when the lens elements shift but it isn't nearly as bad as the 400mm IS. Feels like plastic but acts like high strength poly-carbonate :-)

Well, I just love this lens. When I can take pix at 1/10 sec or 1/20 handheld and get clear images that says something. If I had to have a single lens that I would travel with and not lug around a tripod, this is it.

Strength:

Solid, versatile, quiet, quick focusing, very forgiving of movement at slower shutter speeds.

Weakness:

None to speak of when you consider that it is not an expensive lens.

I LOVE this lens! It is everything that i expected and much more. I use this lens on my Elan 7e and am delighted with the results. This lens is my favorite "walking around" lens and I use it about 75% of my shots. At $400.00 you are getting into the upper reaches of introductory level acquisitions, but if you are serious about learning how to take better images, this is the lens you want to get. Bypass the 28-90mm and the 28-105mm and get his lens. It is pricier, but you can get some serious experience while still not having to take out a second mortgage. It is solid, well built and very forgiving of the photographer with a shakey hand. You will not get the results that you would with a F1.8 - 2.8 lens as far as sharpness goes, but who cares? What you will get is a very good lens for a reasonable price.

Customer Service

None needed yet and none expected barring rough, careless treatment.

Weakness:

a little bulky. zoom creep. flare. distortion. plastic housing

i started out with a 28-80 kit lens but quickly replaced it with a 50 1.8. that was a super sharp lens but it was built by some third world sweat shop and it literally fell apart in my hands. canon refused to repair it claiming "impact damage." well since the lens sells for 65 bucks brand new at canoga camera, i can see why canon doesn't want to invest any time or money in it. so without my only useful lens i needed a replacement and fast. that's when i decided to go for broke and spend the money on this one. well, it's not quite as sharp as the 50 but who cares. it has usm, is and an amazing focal range. the color rendition equals the 50 and even with it's limitations (which i will get to) it is the lens to own for under 500 bucks. i have made enlargements up to 10 by 15 inches with very good results. the image stabilizer really works and with slow film it is a must for a comsumer zoom with slow apertures. my black and white shots are a little less contrasty and highlights wash out more than with the 50 but this is a fair trade for the versatility afforded by the focal range. the weakest point from an optical perspective is the distortion inherent in zooms in this price range. but for non-architectural subjects or people who don't appear in the edges of the frame distortion is at an acceptable level. i have had this lens for four months and put at least thirty or forty rolls through my elan 2 with this lens attached. it has performed just fine. alas it is in the shop for repair because my camera bag had a 140 lb. human body sit upon it with my beloved lens inside. the plastic housing was tweaked and the focus ring would not turn. the lens was still working though and the internal af was unaffected. i just wish consumer camera gear had fewer plastic components. but then it would probably cost more than i would want to spend. of course the old fd stuff is more solid but auto focus is just too good to give up. since this lens will be gone for four to six weeks, i bought a used 50 1.4 for 219 bucks. after one roll through the prime i am blown away but i miss the focal range and image stabilization really helps when you want some depth of field with slower films and don't like using a tripod. finally, the lens is succeptible to zoom creep and has no locking mechanism. also a lens hood is necessary. with a 50 mm prime lens flare is much less of a problem.

Customer Service

canon wouldn't fix my cheapo 50 1.8 under warranty. but i am told they will repair this one because i actually shelled out a little cash

Image Stabilizer 28-135mm range

Weakness:

Size and Weight Lens Creep

Big standard zoom with versatile 28-135mm range. Quite sharp for a consumer zoom. It's the lens that I use most of the time and my only complaint is it's size and weight as well as lens creep when grabbing it out of my camera bag. Otherwise, I'm photojournalist and travel photographer so the image stabilizer works well for me since I don't usually use tripods except for night time photography. Can handhold at incredibly low shutter speeds but that doesn't take the place of a large aperture.

Slow aperture (with AF problems on some bodies) Consistent underexposure (1/3 to 1 stop) Low contrast

The 28-135IS is an excellent "starter" lens, and I've been impressed with it as a learning tool. The range is unbeatable, the IS is highly useful to counter the relatively slow apertures, and the size and weight are about right for a good "walk around" lens. This lens consistently underexposes by about half a stop, sometimes more. I've actually sent it in for recalibration because it bothered me so much, and the problem still exists, albeit to a lesser degree than before calibration. I use this lens on a D30, and the f/5.6 doesn't do the AF mechanism any favors.

I don't know why there are so many bad reviews on this lens from users on different sites. I think it's the best I've owned. The colors and clarity are phenomenal. The Image Stabilizer works great! I tried with and without and there is a vast difference. I see nothing that motivates me to look for any other lens in this range.

Strength:

Lightweight, sharp, great contrast, and image stabilization

Weakness:

I wish the lens extension was a bit more dampened, fully extended the whole thing seems a bit wobbly, although it has never affected the images.

This is the first lens I purchased for a brand-new Canon D60. I researched the lens very carefully. The lens has never disappointed me, and in fact I continue to be surprised by what I can do with it. It is wide-enough for outdoor work, inside a small room you do tend to back up a lot. Wide open at 28mm it is soft, but not unusuable - outside with plenty of light the color, contrast and sharpness at amazing. I do not have steady hands and the IS is an absolute miracle - I've shot dragonflys at 1/30 with all of the veins on the wings sharp. The lens can also close focus at 1.6 feet, and makes shooting insects an flowers fun and easy.

Lens hood could be provided by Canon, not optional.

I have a Contax equipment (two cameras) with Zeiss and Yashica lenses; one year ago I decided to buy an autofocus camera with a wide-tele zoom to have a light bag for my photographics weekend: I choose the Canon Eos 300 and Tamron XR 28-200. Eos 300 is a great small camera: it has a lot a features and all you need to take your favourite pictures; XR 28-200 is a quite good zoom but far from my reference glasses then after few months, I sold it and I bought the Canon 28-135 IS. What' s a lens ! - Optically is perhaps the best lens I have ever owned; I don' t discuss about sharpness because I think it has at any focal, as you can see in Photodo MTF test, a resolution comparable with primes. What I like is the color rendition: I shoud define it natural and smooth; my 180/2,8 Zeiss, which is a famous prime, is drier. These differences are visible with a good slide film (Provia / Sensia 100), a 20x30mm enlargement and Kodak Select print. - IS is not only a good piece of engineering but a real benefit : I can shot at 135mm with 1/30sec and at 28mm with 1/8-1/10sec without any loose of sharpness. Very useful with low lights : sunset , interiors, ... - USM is very quick and noiseless; FTM let you use manual focus without having to disable auto-focus. And now the two, small problems. - First: zoom creep, I 'd like it had the lock. - Second: its lenght; at focal range 28-60mm and if you are close to an indoor subject with the camera flash on, you' ll have a shadow. I have never used Canon "L" lenses, but I rate this zoom a professional lens.

Strength:

Nice focal length range; IS works well

Weakness:

exhibits terrible "zoom creep": set to 50mm and point up and it zooms to 28mm by itself; set to 28mm and point down and it zooms to 50mm by itself. Photo mags have always warned about zoom creep when looking at used lenses but have turned a blind eye to this lens' defect. I bought it from Camera World of OR and was told all these lenses behaved the same. I returned it for refund.

This "Image Stabilized" lens is unstable!
